was just flicking through an issue of World Soccer from July 2008 and they had a special feature on the "top 50 greatest derbies in world football". Here's the top 20: 1. Barcelona - R Madrid 2. Boca Juniors - River Plate 3. Celtic FC - Rangers FC 4. Galatasaray - Fenerbahce 5. Ajax - Feyenoord 6. Lazio - Roma 7. Schalke - Dortmund 8. Al Ahly - Zamalek 9. Sevilla - Betis 10. Red Star Belgrade - Partizan Belgrade 11. Paris St. Germain - Olympique Marseille 12. Juventus - Fiorentina 13. Vasco da Gama - Flamengo 14. Olympiakos Piraeus - Panathinaikos 15. AC Milan - Inter Milan 16. Atletic Bilbao - Real Sociedad 17. Porto - Benfica 18. Corinthians - Sao Paulo 19. Independiente - Racing Club 20. Chivas - America Liverpool vs the scum(man utd for SUPERFAN) is only ranked 28th. anyone ever been to one of these derby match's??
i've been to a few lpool/everton games at anfield and haven't been impresed but i was fortunate enough to be at the derby in goodison this year and that woud piss all over the majority of derbies in that list.
Us V the Scum is the biggest game in world football and the hack that wrote it was'nt and Paris St Germain V Marsielle is 17 places ahead of it is obviusly on some mind bending drug, and his editor deserves a slap.
True.I would rate Us v The mancs, the old firm, boca v river and el classico as the biggest. Rangers and celtic probably hate eachother more than we hate the mancs and the old firms probably have more crunching tackles and sending offs and controversy but in reality the 2 teams are fairly shit and nobody in africa or wherever would get up at 4 am for the old firm where they would for us v the mancs and el classico.also the fact that they meet at least 4-5 times a season takes away from the occasion a bit. River v boca probably has the best atmosphere and passion etc but again its only a huge affair in argentina and not of worldwide interest-most people in europe would hardly know if they were after playing the day before. Barca and Real hate eachother, two class teams with alot of history who hate eachother for political reasons aswell as the constant struggle to be spains biggest club but both sets of fans are fairly shit and create nothing like the atmosphere of the other 3.also,not alot of passion on the pitch with sendings off and shitty tackles and that. i read that article and was disgusted at the time.its a joke. for the blend of hatred, atmosphere, worldwide significance, history, struggle for success and worldwide stature of the clubs i think utd v liverpool is the biggest game in world football overall.
thats a fair point but at the same time you can say the same about most of the games on that list - barca and madrid arent local rivals, marseille v psg, feyenoord v ajax etc.......
Thats fine willy but Madrid is 300 miles from Barcelona, Florence is nowhere near Turin, Paris is a couple of hundred miles from Marsielle, if that Clown of a hack is gona put our game v mancs(who play 40 miles up the road) in a list with these games then it should not be behind those games, us and the mancs are the 2 best suppoted clubs in the world, our website gets more hits than any other sports site in the world, we are massive clubs, ****in Schalke V Dortmund was ahead of us, Seville v Betis FFS he might as well have Burnley v Blackburn on the list as thats as big a game as that 1, like I said he was obviously either on drugs or some mild form of amnesia.
haven't seen the list but when deanashpot said lpool v the scum i thought he meant everton.... of all the games i've seen on tv ireland v rangers would be the biggest derby...
Over the last couple of years I have started to notice the media from time to time describe our game V the Scum to be a derby.Maybe trying to hype it up like the Madrid/Barcelona 'El Derby'.
thats like the ruhr-rhine derby or some shite.anyway too crap clubs and not much hatred so couldnt possibly be bigger than us v the mancs.
Barca V Madrid is the biggest club derby. To most of us surely the united game is bigger than everton, rivals, league titles and european cups etc but if im being honest el classico pisses all over it. Two entire different regions, countries almost taking all their culture onto a football pitch.Incredible atmosphere(was lucky enough to be at one of the games in the camp nou) Id say the atmosphere at boca/river plate is seriously intense
I think trucker paddy has got this thread spot on el-ahly vs zamalek always sounded interesting, they have to fly refs in from abroad, and neither team is allowed to use their own stadium - it's played at the National stadium. this gives some idea of it
its a hard one, but i think us v scum is one off the biggest derbies in the world, what ever you have about Paris St. Germain v Olympique Marseille coming in 11th place, fine let it be, but this would huge in france maybe, but like some one pointed out, more countries would be more focused on a pool v scum game than any other game, asia in particular. YNWA
Its farcical that the LFC v Scum match isn't in the top 5, for me its top 3 every day!!! I s'pose most readers of the paper/mag/rag/publication are from the countries the top listed games are in, are from!!
Well I know for one there will only be one derby in Ireland next season and that's Super Shamrock Rovers against UCD, because we are the only two clubs in the league that can properly qualify for a license, after all the crap thats gone in junkieland and that halting site in phibsboro
No. Liverpool vs Manchester United doesn't come close to being top 3. Just because somebody watches the match in the arse end of nowhere in Kerry or China and Andy Gray hypes it up on sky sports super funday sunday doesn't make it a bigger derby than anything in the top 20. sorry
