you need a wireless router. if you get broadband with eircom, i think their modem has wireless built in
otherwise you can buy one in any electronics store
they usually come with cd that will guide you through installing it.

i use a belkin wireless router that i got in harvey norman for €60 and have never had any problems with it

all you need is a wireless router and if you have wireless built into the laptop, after configuring the router for wireless you need to set it up with WPA encrpytion a lot more secure than WEP, they key changes every 10kb trasnmitted so it is harder for someone to gain access to your wireless network. The best advice i can give ya is for example if you don't have wireless built into the laptop the make of the rputer ypu have get the same makers wireless adaptor its handier to configure

I am currently working for a wireless broadband provider (Digiweb) so I'd be happy to help you get set up if you wanted JC23, any questions pm me or post here, and we can discuss your best option

    netopia

Eircom typically provide a Netopia wireless modem/router for DSL connections FOC. Other providers often only supply a modem as standard.

If you only have a modem or basically an ethernet cable coming down from roof (if you have a wireless provider) then you need to buy a wireless router. Linksys and netgear are good makes.

Most laptops are now supplied with wifi built in. Most desktops are not. An internal card or usb stick device is required for a desktop. Often router and usb device can be purchased as a bundle. Argos, believe it or not, have a good deal currently on a Netgear router and USB device.

    http://www.argos.ie/webapp/wcs/stor...gId=1500000701&langId=-1&productId=1500094765 (74.99euro as of 4th Sept 07)

If you're currently on DSL and only have a modem it is possible to buy a combined modem/router (one box) as opposed to a modem and router. Although the advantage of the latter is if you ever move to a wireless provider (eg Digiweb?) or use say an NTL cable connection then you can reuse the router.

Some routers need to have ports opened within its configuration page if your has one, some don't need ports opened but seems you need to so what you need to do is ring Microsofts Xbox live support or check the website www.xbox.com and they should have the port settings there

I happen to have a USB network adapter from one of the cheaper suppliers mentioned above on a pc. The supplied software was unsatisfactory - connection dropped very often. Did some googling and discovered that the internals (for the version I had) was manufactured by another company. Downloaded their drivers and haven't had any issue since.

At the end of the day you get what you pay for.

haven't got a clue about half the stuff these Lads are talking about, wouldn't be too technical when it comes to Broadband but if you want reasonably fast Broadband that's cheap and can be used anywhere,Indoors or out,i'd reccommend the 3 Data Modem.
i have it about 4 Months now and it's grand for normal Web Browsing but if you're planning on doing a lot of Downloading i'd look elsewhere.
129 Euro up front and then 20 per Month.i'm very happy with it anyway.

and before anyone asks,no,i don't Work for them......
