Well all the "British isles"teams seem to have been found out once again.Ireland,Scotland,Engerland,Wales,North Ireland aside all had shocking poor results yesterday. It really is beginning to show the real lack of quality in the homegrown players for all countrys.I mean we made Cyprus look like Italy for god's sake.Engerland embaressed once again at the highest level,Wales just plain rubbish,Northern Ireland fair play but guts will get you only so far and Scotland for all there bravado will fall at the last hurdle to Italy:( What it does show is a total lack of talent coming up from schoolboy level for all countrys.I mean out of all those five teams name one player who is considered world class by the football community(Beside's the british media i mean)Gerrard=inconsistent,Duff=Ha,Ronney=overhyped,Miller=Who? As for the Republic i think that as bad a manager that stan is i think that the blame cant be laid totally at his door.Half are players cant even do the simplest of things(passing the football to one another),and if you cant do that you have'nt got a hope in hell. The more and more i watch teams from outside british isles even small nations like Grecce, turkey, cyprus etc...all the players are good on the ball in tight spaces and have great ball retention skills. There is a real arguement to be had that the influx of "johnny foreigner" into the prem league has killed the development of good young players and i have to agree. You cant blame a club like liverpool to go for a young lad from Hungray who has talent and a promising future and costs 500,000 quid as opposed to a talented lad from England,Ireland etc....who will cost them 5 million:eek:Doesnt take a genius to figure out what this does for the "homegrown"countrys prospects in the long run.To be honest i couldnt care less about Wales,Scotland or Englands international teams but i do care about our national team.Think we all have to face up to facts and realise that we are never going to see the glory days of the Charlton and McCarthy era's ever again until something changes:(

Well in fact it is objected to by the majority of the population and also by the Government of our country be it politically or geographically.

Britain and Ireland are two different islands up this part of Europe so as to how we come under the British Isles i'm not sure where that came from.

Maybe refer to it as the British and Irish Isles or even better the British Isles and Ireland.

A very good point, I would agree, all teams outside the British and Irish isles :)D) have better technique.

I am aware of all the arguments for and against this as I have participated in many a debate on the matter.IMO I have no prob with the term British Isles. There are even some who like to see our part of the world referred to as north west isles of europe or other such silly names, this is Political Correctness gone crazy.

But let each person decide for themselves what you want to call this part of the world.

Agreed, some of the russian pass and move play was amazing in the 2nd half, I'm actually glad it looks like none of the british teams will be there as we can now watch it like a neutral and not have to listen to the shite that comes out in the british press when these competions come around.

Wait till you see, if they (england) don't qualify, the competition will be "devalued" without them. More like the policing costs will be halved :D

Whilst I usually hate things attributed to political correctness as they usually aren't common sensed based and done for the sake of it I do believe regardless of the origins of it that a significant if not majority of people in this country object to the term British Isles. Personally I've seen it used as a loaded term by British people before as an obvious jeer at Irish along Home Countries/British Empire lines and do believe since both isles referred to aren't actually British, as the name plainly implies whatever non-political literal meaning arguments are made, the term is no longer valid. Why retain an invalid name for the sake of it ?

Whatever your opinion on the name I don't think it being changed can be just put down to non-sensical PCism gone mad given the long held objections of a significant number of people from well before PCism ever came about. To me its common sense that it no longer applies and I've heard all the archipelago arguments. At the end of the day you won't hear it used too often on these shores in practice but if you want to use outdated terminology work away.

BTW I think dubit10's use of quotes around British Isles recognised the term can be non-trivial at the outset........throw in a smiley aswell the next time :D

Anyway yes all the British teams and ourselves have been shown up somewhat. One guy today was commenting that the players under Charlton were competing for Championships in England and asked how many would get into the Premiership 11.........I asked him how many English would actually get into it !!! and laughed at the suggestion of Lampard and Gerrard saying you pay too much attention to the English media, try Fabregas and Elano for starters. They might sneak a defender or two into the team thats about it, nothing in midfield, deffo not up front and most definately not between the posts.

yes they are more technical than british and irish players but that is down to our managers of international teams wanting to play the english style of footie instead of the european style of keeping the ball and using it the right way..

In fairness it comes out of our media as well.Over the last few years our media has come right on par with the English media IMO,there is no difference at all between them.
