I've been hearing a lot over the last few days about the leak of the mother and baby home report, all I've heard is how terrible the actual leak was. Maybe I'm way off the mark here but surely the editor of the Sunday independent and the journalist who wrote the story should be getting slaughtered, them pair of pricks knew the upset it was going to cause but still went with the story.

That is correct. All they care about is headlines and how many copies they sell

I see Nicky Byrne is on that gravy train. You have to laugh listening to him say he always wanted to be a DJ!

You'd laugh, until you think about the paycheck, and that we're ultimately the ones funding it. :(

Maybe I'm remembering things wrong, but I am remembering that Fianna Fail used to be good at the PR side of politics. There's never been more highly paid advisors but they're fucking awful at it now. That situation with Micheal and the White House was an absolute disaster for them and easily avoided. How do you end up with all of the bad PR that would come with going, without actually going? But fair play, they managed it. Stephen Donnelly makes Phil Hogan seem PR friendly and nearly a year into the job for Martin,TD's and journalists still often refer to Varadkar as Taoiseach which shows where peoples brains are. FG have run rings around them.

Donnelly is a prime example of someone who dresses well and sounds well and talks the talk but he's an absolute spoofer.
It's amazing what you can achieve if you stick a tin of fruit on and put a few marbles in your mouth and just waffle.

He's also a great example of "these are my principles,if you don't like them I have others".

When he eventually runs out of parties to join to help his career,he'll change his name by deed poll to Stephen Healy-Rae.

Trump taken over there twitter account?? Are pushing for civil unrest again? Or is there 'dead' people voting for them and/or dup?
    I'm really curious about this.
Plus is this not done every so often?

If I understand it correctly(and I'm not sure I do)everybody has to register again to vote which will obviously mean many people are going to lose their vote. Something like this along with enforcing ID voting disproportionately impacts voter turnout in more disadvantaged areas,so I'd be more surprised if Sinn Fein weren't speaking out about it,they're going to lose valid votes off the back of it. I don't know enough about the situation to have an opinion on whether its right or wrong, but its strange to link resistance to it to Donald Trump because its the kind of policy he'd be massively in favour of.

Seeing the entire UK plans to introduce mandatory voter ID and redraw electoral boundaries for 2023 while a Tory government are in charge kind of adds to the theory it's about voter suppression.

I think you've got this completely backwards. Voter suppression is something Donald encouraged in unfavourable constituencies. Seeing the Tories use dirty tactics now to try and save them from the inevitable onslaught.

Not sure how you can take this and have a dig at SF. And if voting from the grave concerns you I'd say you will find it's rampant across the board.

    Strange post.

I'm trying to keep an open mind to why it might make sense to do this in the north. On the face of it the most obvious conclusion I come to is it's wrong, but given its a post conflict society with plenty of legacy issues and an assembly that's relatively new, I'd like to try and understand it more first.

The plans in the rest of the UK are blatantly obvious voter suppression and gerrymandering. This particular group of tories care less about democracy than any group in a long time. Their latest dead cat to deflect away from how bad things are is a bill to "protect" free speech in universities that. Too many people are doing down Britain apparently by talking about the things they've done as a nation through history,so they're going to protect free speech by stopping anybody telling truth that hurt flag bangers feelings.

To be honest having read about the process there doesn't seem to be a huge amount in it, they're a statutory requirement to review the register and it was delayed last year so they're going ahead with it this year. On the face of it they're saying you can register online or by mail and that every house regardless of whether they're currently registered to vote will receive a letter reminding them to register. SF just need to make sure to get through to their support base the need to get their name on the register.

A bit too simplistic imo.The chances of this not resulting in a reduction of people voting is very very low. I think everybody agrees that the higher the turnout in any election, the better that is for democracy. Reducing voter turnout should be weighed against the threat to the integrity of the electoral process before deciding whether it should happen or not. The fact it was delayed because of the pandemic but will now go ahead while the pandemic is still going on is another issue.

I would say that you are right, that they would like to get rid of it....

But they are in a fairly tricky position, as I think they are pretty much all royalists, and Queenie must retain one's empire, don't you know
