Well who do you's fancy for this one over the weekend? Hard to see pass tiger again, ive backed a few European players each way.
I did not release it was way back in 1999 the last time a European player won a Major...I knew it was a couple of years but not that long.
Hard to see past Tiger but he's too short for my taste. So my Empire Trade Credits are invested in Luke Donald, Justin Rose Retief Goosen & Graeme McDowell.
Good start by McGinley. The start of Tiger's is a worry played really steady golf today he could have been 5 under after his first 5 holes. Darren Clarke came back well after a bad start. Harrington has put in a good one. The main suprise is Garcia on 6 under the man finished last the last time the Open was played at Carnoustie
ole ole ole ole ole ole. Where can I find the nearest fountain to jump in. What a finish. 1947 the last time an irish man won the open. Great TV today
Ireland win the Gold & Silver, big up for young McElroy as well, outstanding performance. & up yours to anyone who ever regarded Harrington as a 'choker' for all the times he finished second, you can't come second unless you're competing for first. I'm sticking to backing GAA from now on, that's the first time in roughly five years I didn't back Podge for a major - sick as the proverbial parrott.
You had two of the perennial underachievers in Majors battling it out. Delighted for Harrington, great day for Irish sport. Well Done Padraig now you have broken your duck how about another few rolling in over the next few years.
Who said nice guys dont win majors! Well done Padraig great play and well deserved. I'd say theres a lot of people eating humble pie today including Faldo!!
Yeah I flicked on to watch the last few rounds myself. Couldn't believe those two shots in the water on the 18th hole for Padraig. Once it went to playoff though I was hopeful for him. It was quite emotional to watch at the end.
Fair play to him and its about time,4 years out of the last 5 I have put a bet on at the start of the golf season that an Irish player would win a major.I did not put it on this year for some reason.
I think why because he always choked along with Garcia in the majors coming down to the nitty gritty in the final round of one, finally he has got over that major hump not for a few more and at least there will be one major winner in the Ryder Cup team next year in Valhalla
The perception of Padraig Harrington as a 'choker' in majors or in any other form of competitive golf is, to put it at its lowest, farcical. His development as a pro over the years stands in contrast to many who may be blessed with more of what is called natural talent, his achievements are the fruit of setting consistently higher objectives and working to achieve them. Last season he declared his primary objective to be winning the Order of Merit - he did it. This year he declared his twin objectives to be winning the Irish Open and a Major - he did it. There are worlds of difference between being not good enough, being a choker, being consistently in a competitve position and winning. The last two are part of a process for those who are neither of the first two. Padraig Harrington has been both a great champion and superb ambassador for himself, his family and this country since his amateur days. To lazily categorise him as a 'choker' is an insult.
His objective for the last 5 years has been to win a major as he has been in his best form during this period, why i mean he always choked is basically coming down the final stretch of a major particularly at Winged Foot in last years US Open he blew his chance to win it he gave the trophy to Geoff Ogilvy, he nearly the the irish open away this year and i'm glad he won the open but Garcia let him away with it, Harrington was a few inches from throwing away The Open and his comments afterwards echoed that.
I think Harrington is a class act. It was only a matter of time before he won a major. But I agree in a sense though with 5 for keeps. If every time you walk up that final tee in a winning position and you dont do it, its gotta get inside your head. The difference on this occassion was PH had a bit of luck he hasnt had before. I dont think this will be his last major though
