Not sure whats available, but when Lidl do laptops there very decent including price if you are not in a rush.
If its for basic usage, look for 160g hard drive, at least 2g RAM and processor at around 2.1GHz (or a smaller duo core).
If you need web cam etc, prices will be upped (for higher standard) but i think most come standard these days, also with wireless enabled for net.
If its not used for high graphic games, there is a samsung in the argos book for under 500 euros. (although soe might not like buying laptops from such places)
I wouldn't consider myself an expert so also wait for other opinions

Have the current PC Worl flyer here beside me. Some decent offers in it.

Dell Inspiron 1545 - Dual Core Processors, 3gb memory, Windows 7 Premium, 250gb HD, wifi, webcam, 15.6" screen - 469euro

Toshiba l450d-128 - AMD Athon Dual Core processor, 4gb memory, Win 7, 320gb hard drive, webcam, wireless - 479.99euro

They have cheaper crap - Advent etc - wouldn't touch it. They have HP, ACER, SONY etc going upto 599.99

You'll pay extra for 17.3" screen etc, better grapphics processor etc. Most expensive one they have is an Acer 17.3" screen, 1gb graphics (good for games), Core 2 processor, 4gb memory, 1TB hard drive, HD webcame and Dolby surround sound for 950euro.

My wife has a sub 500euro Dell Vostro (business range I think) for home use and it is perfectly good enough for anyone for web browsing, writing word docs etc, burning dvd's, music etc etc unless you want to play fancy games etc.

No harm in having a look at the Dell outlet store. Its where pc's or laptops that have already been built for either individuals or companies have been returned to Dell for a variety of reasons including cancellation or spec change requests. Products are all tested and repackaged before being sold on a first-come, first served basis. One of the lads at work got one there last week and there are some great bargains to be got but you need a bit of luck and be online at the right time to pick one up.

Stick with a decent brand as listed above and you won't go wrong. Make sure it has webcam, wireless, decent large hard drive, Windows 7, 3/4gb memory.

I've used Dells all my life and never had a problem, so I'd recommend them.

Or you could keep an eye here for laptop bargain alerts.
