Has anyone upgraded to this format yet? I treated myself to a sony blu ray player at christmas time & now have around 25 blu rays including Band of Brothers & The matrix trilogy. My overall impression is that this is definitely the future with the picture crystal clear & absolutely amazing sound(you need a HDTV & the right cable), all due to the fact that the disc can hold a hell of a lot more memory than a normal dvd. Prices are coming down aswell with more people upgrading & don't forget that at the start a single blu ray could cost you 50-60 euros while now i get most of mine for around 12.99.
Its mainly the reason I went for ps3 over xbox Matty. Blu-ray won the battle with HD dvd and its becoming more mainstream all the time, I remember only a year and a half the amount of bluray films was brutal, and as you say the prices were shocking. Prices of players and discs are dropping all the time. Defo the way future.
Ye i give it about 3 or 4 years and everyone will have one especially with the blu ray player playing normal dvds aswell.
The same with me lads went for PS3 cos of the bluray, its unreal i recommend apocolypto its amazing. the fact that the PS3 updates itself can only be good for the blueray too
Blu Ray player updates itself when you stick an internet connection in the back of it too, i ordered apocolypto the other day after hearing how good it looks.
didnt know that about bueray thats class, is there any kind of interaction with the player like menu etc?? its immense with surround sound the waterfall scene is
Ye theres loads of mad stuff like when you hook up the internet connection it brings you to BD Live which offers up extras to the disc you have in like deleted scenes etc. Theres a lot more to fiddle around with like a quiz popping up during the film & some films let you shoot at the screen.
I think if you need to convince someone about the difference between Blu Ray and DVD both for picture and sound (if you have a surround sound set up) put on Transformers or for picture quality any of the GCI cartoons like Cars, Ratatouille or Kung Fu Panda and you'll be gob smacked with how pin sharp it is. Altough the cost of the blu ray discs are coming down I still import about 85% of mine. But the one thing I would say unless you have a full HD tv set which is 1080p you wont get the full benefit of the better picture.
As my mate said to me when i got my PS3 and had normal tele "its like putting a ferrari engine into a Fiat Punto"
Yes got a New T.V, PS3 and surround sound at Christmas, my wife and I treated ourselves as we moved into the house we built following our wedding, we could not believe it when we started to play the games, Fifa is nearly worn out at this stage, Movie quality is class, I put a movie in the VHS recently (seven) and could barely make it out, massive how times have changed, picture quality and sound on Blu-Ray is class, I buy on play.com but most shops now are the same price, worth the few euro's more . . .
Play is one of the best but if you go to the international version of their site they charge in £ and not euro so it works out cheaper as when you pick the euro option (which you have to) on the UK site they rob you blind. You can pick up My Bloody Valentine from the US now which can play here that has both the 2D & 3D versions on it and 4 pairs of glasses. Its not out here yet but when it is released you have to pick whether you want to get it in 2D or 3D as they are releasing them as 2 seperate versions. This link below will let you know if titles can be played on your Irish PS3 or not and should always be checked before you buy. http://bluray.liesinc.net/ www.axelmusic.com is another one as they sell US & Canadian blu ray titles and the Canadian ones are usually cheaper than the US versions the only difference is the packaging has english and french writing. The last one I would look at is http://www.ezydvd.com.au/ when you convert the AU$ to Euro you can get some good bargins and all oz titles can play here.
Thanks Pimboli, didn't know that about play and will have a look at the other sites, I bought games in the US for PS3 and all worked fine but have not looked at Blu-Ray, always looking for cheaper options so thanks. . . .
Have seen Cars in Blu-Ray on Sony 40" Full HD and it was class. Discs/Players should even drop to a lower price by next xmas.
Got a load of cheap blurays in zaavi when it was closing. Most were top notch especially David Attenboroughs Planet Earth, 2001 and Dr. No (it looked like it was made 4 years ago not 40!) but Full Metal Jacket wasnt great and Terminator 2s sound was brutal (speech volume was really low but sound effects volume very high)
Can anyone tell me if the bluray player on my PS3 is just as good as another separate stand alone player or is it worth investing in a more expensive player. I do already have a good quality HD lead from sony
