Personally I feel we lack the pulling power to attract top draw players even if we have the transfer funds and the wages needed . Personally i only want players who really want to play for us but is that to old school ? Thoughts ? We have some great talent at the club don't get me wrong but feel we're not quite there getting our the top targets that we want over the last few seasons and its going to take a few seasons of been in the top 4 consistently and winning trophies consistently
Have to disagree with that , we have been one of the most backed clubs outside the champions league Lost our winning attraction ?
Precisely. City didnt have much success but managed to buy some serious players early in the sheiks reign. Some flopped but some zabaleta, kompany etc played a big role in current team. Its a dangerous precident to set though and not one Id wish to see the club adopt
But it is with most; and their agents. Barca and real are on a different level to us. We will do well to scout players that they or real will ultimately but for big money. Its the way of the world. Look at Monaco...money...psg...money. Yet with good and clever scouting Porto and have remained competitive at the european level despite an inferior league with limited resources. Its about being clever, astute and targeting the right players. After all we did sign suarez not that long ago and we will have a few amazing players to droll over again. We make them heroes and they respond
Have Liverpool ever went out and bought the best of the best. I can't really remember in my lifetime us going out and doing it. And I don't think we done it back in the 60s 70s or 80s. We don't sign world stars we make them. We give players the platform to show how good they are. I think in the 60s 70s 80s it was the club that deciðed when the player moved on when they were no longer needed. Now it's different, the players themselves decide when they want to go. It's just the way it is.
While I broadly agree with the sentiments of what you posted. Talking about the 60's and 70's in comparison with now is futile. The very first weekend in the Premiership out of 242 players who started for the 22 teams there was only 14 who were foreign. The culture of the game has changed completely and sadly we as fans have to get used to it. Chances are we might never have a one club player in the future when Steven Gerrard retires.
Well said . But things have changed since then , feel its going to take getting back to been consistently in the champions league and winning trophies to attract who we really want Going to be down to Brendan now doing what was done back then but it's different times but I've a lot of hope in Brendan but going to need the raw materials to polish
First week of July and we look to have most of the clubs targets tied up, don't think any other club in Europe are as advanced in signing their summer targets as we are As long as the manager gets the players he wants that's all that matters
I agree. It's the sum of the parts that make or break a team. Again, compare Spurs and us last year. Given that our top striker missed 10 (?) Games they were spanked because they were not a team. I don't want the club to spend a huge amount to buy some guy for €250k a week. It's a waste of money.
Whats important in this window we dont end up like spurs did last season buying names for the sake of filling a squad, we need players that fit into our system, what also important is after the impending deal for Suarez is tied up we dont get caught again like we did for Carroll, we need to spend wisely while at the same time buying quality starters not potentialy good starters we have enough of them.
I dont think we can attract the players we want. Last year we targeted big names like Costa and Mika.. (dortmund), willian and thought we were losing out because we couldnt offer champions league football. This year Alexis sanchez seems to have been our top target and even though we are in a strong postion money wise we couldnt do a deal (looking this way). So far we have strengthened the squad significantly with Lambert, Can, Lallana and looking like adding Origi, Markovic and Lovren. When we take Suarez out of the mix i would make the case that while we have a stronger squad we now have a much weaker 11. we are gambling on young and expensive talent on low wages. Take last years 11 Mignolet Johnson Skrtel Sakho Flanno Gerrard Henderson Suarez Sterling Coutinho/Allen (depending on shape) Sturridge v whats looking like this years Mignolet Johnson Skrtel/lovren Sakho Flanno/enrique Gerrard henerson Can/Allen Sterling Sturridge Lallana/Markovic A big sum of money spent without making our starting 11 much/any better. I am a bit worried we are doing a Spurs Bale situation with our transfer funds. However it is still early in the window and the situation could change. Heres hoping.
Do feel we have brought in better quality players this window so far and Suarez leaving seems is out of our hands with his cast iron buy out clause The likes of Lallana Lovern and Markovic are expensive signings and we cant afford for them not to be successful lets hope they are . I'm expecting Can to be a astute buy and same with lambert just a pity were not adding them to a team keeping Suarez . Orgi seems to be loaned out straight away so let's hope he improves for the future . Still need another top draw attacking player and maybe it's Shaqiri since not Sanchez if we can get him to come ?
I said the exact same thing to a mate yesterday. Whilst the squad definitely does need bulking up, to have spent maybe £100 million in a summer (if we get Lovren and Markovic for the prices being quoted) and not to have improved the first 11 is pretty depressing really.
That's probably a huge chunk of the Suarez money too. No chance we had that big a budget before sales.
There's nobody out there better than Suarez so the first 11 would always look weaker when he leaves Sanchez would have took the sting out of it but not improved the first 11 IMO Looking at the players back in training and still players from the WC to return and our new signings to be added , I'm optimistic we will push on again under Brendan
