Liverpool have warned fans they will ban anyone who lets off smoke bombs and other “pyrotechnic devices” at matches.

This season there have been frequent episodes of canisters being opened at away games, sending plumes of red smoke into the stadiums.

It is not a trend purely limited to Liverpool fans but the Merseyside club have called for their supporters to cease or risk the prospect of exclusion.

"As the Reds prepare to take on Newcastle on Saturday the club is reminding its travelling fans that smoke bombs, flares and other pyrotechnic devices are not allowed in any Premier League football grounds," said a statement on liverpoolfc.com.

"A number of incidents have been reported recently that a minority of Liverpool fans have been behaving inappropriately during our away fixtures and using these illegal devices.

"If a person is identified behaving inappropriately at away grounds then the club will have no option but to ban the individuals concerned from future matches.

"LFC encourages all away fans to respect the values of the club and stop taking these flares and fireworks to matches."

It seems the crowd are having to find new ways to entertain themselves seeing as it seems we won't be competing for anything for a long time. I would have expected that it was standard for flares should not be allowed in the stands.

Spotters in the away end this weekend apparently looking to ban lads from home and aways. Who gives a toss like, not as if it's doing any damage to anyone.

Hilarious at Wigan away when one went off. My mates Da whose about 60 odd was right bang in the middle of it on tv. Looked like he set it off caught red handed on camera but knowing him it wouldn't be his scene at all, not that it bothers him.

Just another step forward in the killing of the game for the average working class fan. Buy your ticket sit down and shut up.

Looks like I'll have to wear my skinny jeans to away games in future. Hard to get into them these days though but if that's what LFC wants who am I to argue.

very true Ron, i Have seen them been used in other countries the lads has sand buckets in front of them to throw in into if any problems,it seems to be easier to complain and outlaw things than possibly look at workable soloutions

Yeah that's the key point imo. Instead of outright banning them, it would have been far better to put certain measures in place to make it safer to have them at games.
No doubt they add hugely to the atmosphere at games. And that's surely got to be worth something these days in particular.

It's the lazy cop-out option to just ban them.
