I think when we can all reflect on both players careers after they've finished playing, we'll be able to garner a better debate on who is the best. Kenny went to a team that was winning everything, and had to take the place of another brilliant red, KKeegan... That is not an easy thing to do, but he made it look easy. And what he went on to achieve with the reds after his playing days were over, makes it even more of an impact this man had with the club. SG on the other hand, is the player equivalent to Bill Shankly for me.... We were competitive to a point in the league for so long, but never had the extra bit that could push us on to win major honours... SG, almost single handedly has raised the profile of this great club ever further as the years have passed, attracting better managers, and better players... Im not saying SG is the sole reason for LFC getting stronger throughout the years, but he is a major factor in this. And then, theres the actual player himself.... Stop for one moment, and ask yourself is there another player on planet Earth you seriously consider swapping for Stevie???? ..... No? I couldn't think of one either..... When SG finishes up playing, is the best time to compare these 2 magnificent reds.... Lets just hope that when Stevie does finish, we can find another player that we can mention in the same breath as the above 2!!!
"Stop for one moment, and ask yourself is there another player on planet Earth you seriously consider swapping for Stevie???? ..... No? I couldn't think of one either....." I agree , but if Kenny was 29 now , would your answer be different ? Put it this way, I/we are privileged to have had both men play for LFC . Debates like these are great as there are a million reasons why you can pick either as they are both going to be real ledgends of the club and we love them both
The fact you chose someone that played so far back says it all really... But Kenny would be the only real contender for a swap!!
this thread imo is a waste of time and is a load of b*****ks. stevie g vs king kenny no comparison. next we be doing other comparisons... torres vs god vs rush clemence vs grobb vs reina hansen vs carra so on.........................
haha, id nearly got to the end of the thread and thought noone had spotted this - was starting to think it was just me! as for the question... I will go for Stevie as I've seen him live. more a question for those who've seen both more regularly
Tough call - as someone already posted there are endless reasons to choose either player. The only time we can truly debate this is when Stevie has finished his playng career with the Reds [and his managerial career with the club - who knows......], but for the time being here are my few thoughts on the subject! Stevie G has been outstanding for the club and at times has saved the team single handed. He has played with some average players and has been influential in getting great results with a limited team around him. His goalscoring rate is impressive and he has steadily improved every season. King Kenny played in an outstanding team during a hugely successful time for the Reds. You can argue that he benefited from having great players around him in a great team, but I think the fact that he was head and shoulders above his teammates shows how special he was that he could stand out from all those other great players. He was a wonderful player who was class personified on the pitch, and this was at a time when players didn't get as much protection from referees to showcase their talents. Kenny was class off the pitch also, as his courage & dignity during the dark days following Hilsborough showed [as after Heysel when he took on the player manager role, at a time of a lot of unrest in football]. I have watched both players - Kenny [on TV] as he was nearing the end of his playing days [and videos of his peak years] and Stevie G since he has broken into the team. Stevie G I really admire, but he still has some big days left in his LFC career and hopefully he can soon boast of having won every top flight honour - more than once [with the exception of the UEFA Cup!] However, for me I think King Kenny just shades it at the moment for the reasons mentioned above, but also for his success as manager and his character as a person who became one with his people following the tragic events of April 1989. I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years time, it is Stevie G who is getting the nod in a tight vote on this topic, but for now, its King Kenny for King of the Kop. YNWA
Mods - I clicked on Stevie G instead of King Kenny when voting! Any chance you can edit the vote? Anyway, I'm tired so will take this as a sign that its time to go to bed now!!!
King Kenny now, when Gerrards career is over that may be different depending on how we do in the next 4 years. If he can deliver a title or two then it will be different but now its Kenny by a distance.
Had the privilege of seeing the King live at Anfield many moons ago against Keegan-era Southampton. Kenny's the greatest player to EVER wear the red shirt, in my humble opinion! Stevie is without doubt the top midfielder in the world bar none, the Kenny Dalglish of this generation I'd say. So it's the King for me.
