Ok Guys and Gals. I have finally put the final touches to the hike to raise money for Pam. Thanks to Ciara (Pams daughter) for also jumping on board and offering me a helping hand. Ciara is helping setup a mycharity.ie page similar to what she did for the Womens Mini Marathon. I didnt want to say this was going ahead until I had enough hike leaders and some first aiders for safety. Hike Details: Distance: 21 Kms Starting: 8am on 30th October Start Point: Marley Park End: Enniskerry for transport back (your own transport) The walk is 21 KM along the Wicklow Way. We have Hike leaders beginning in Marley Park, making our way to Knockree and following this Enniskerry for transport home.Despite us having several first aiders this is a charity hike and at your own risk. ... Approximately an 8 hour hike. Passing Kilmashogue, Fairy Castle (536m), Two Rock and Tibradden mountains the trail descends to reach the Glencullen road at Ballybrack after 9 km. Walking eastwards along the road, the route then turns south (A diversion of 2km eastwards will take the weak-willed to Johnny Fox's world-famous pub and also an occasional bus service back to the city!) to cross the Glencullen River. The hike then begins the ascent towards Prince William's Seat (555m) followed by a zigzag descent to the Enniskerry road at about 17km, directly north of Knockree Hill. Proper hike gear should be worn, it is October and hill walking in October can be cold on high grounds. STRICTLY no denim. Bring your own food and cold and hot drinks. We now have 3 hike leaders, 1 first aider (im aiming to secure a 2nd) and Im looking for people who may be interested in being spotters or near the areas with cars should we need quick transport. (please pm me if you can provide this service) For those not taking part due to work / family / fitness or other I hope you will dig deep into your pockets and either donate online or when you see us with the sponsor cards. Any questions feel free to ask.
(Some Mod wanna make this a sticky?) Theres two types of fitness Ken - people that can run for 90 minutes solid on a football pitch (which I cant) or the ones that can take their time walking. As I said to Ciara, its not a marathon we are running. Its at walking pace which should take 8 hours Im hoping maximum. Im starting early so we hopefully get there by 4/5pm. I have to say 21K is a long hike for the inexperienced hiker. So far we have: Hike Leaders: Myself, Karl Caswell, (hopefully 2 more) Kev Dorran Johnny Murray Ken Jones Ciara Martin Ken (CrumlinRed) John Maher (one of Ciaras friends) Think Ciara may end up getting a few more. Kev Dorans looking into Sponsor cards and Ciara will set up the Mycharity.ie site again, We hope those who fainted at the idea (Garrett!) will dig deep into their pockets! Joking aside and leaving Garrett alone, I did have some people say "hell no I couldnt!" Thats perfectly fine, I dont want any injuries on the hills. What I could do is with some people who might like to take a day trip around Enniskerry that Saturday, because I could do with some guys and gals with cars should anyone need to back out of the hike we can get them to the nearest road safely. Preferably people who know the area also or have GPS in their cars!
Hey Justy, you can provisionally put me down for this. I'm sure i'll be talking to Kevy D so i'll get back to you soon enough.
I'd be well up for this but doing the marathon a few days previous for the same cause. I got sponser cards of Pam so won't post here looking for online donations, I'll get me mates and the lads from work and family to fill the cards up for me. best of luck with it.
I'll update the list later on guys. I have also confirmed a friend of mine who is with St Johns Ambulance. So you are in good hands, just dont do anything stupid!
oh ye forgot to ask that, ill just need boots,i have rain gear from the golf,do many people use the walking poles?
Tilly with your knees lad I recommend a cheap pair of hiking poles. keep an eye in Aldi. Shay thanks for the sticky Ok guys if your looking for gear which is cheap and works the job, head to the OAS store on Liffey Street for boots. Dont buy any of the "Rock N River" crap, suitable for kids on summer camps! Either that or just around the corner from there is basecamp ireland, new store and have some good deals. I will be giving plenty of more details shortly guys. Here is the map: Im looking at a half way point should anyone need to bail on me.
Perfect lad. Guys I'll be updating the list and details at lunchtime. We have now 3 First Aiders, 2 hike leaders and I have someone looking into a hopeful minibus at good price from Enniskerry back into Dublin. More news to follow however with us getting a minibus I want to place a deadline for those interested. Setting this to Sunday. So please PM me if you are looking to participate. Thanks all for the great response.
Love to go on this but I'll be at a wedding in Carrick-on-Shannon. Will definatley donate a few bob towards the effort. Fair play Justy and hope you get a great turnout.
Ok Update Here is a nice map for everyone detailing the journey. http://www.everytrail.com/fullscreen.php?trip_id=569940 We start at Marlay Park (Marlay Park can be reached by Dublin Bus Route 16) before ascending Kilmashogue Mountain where panoramic views of Dublin can be enjoyed before the trail passes over the top of Kelly's Glen and into the Glencullen Valley. The trail descends into the Glencullen Valley near Tibradden Mountain and follows the road to the hamlet of Bornaraltry. The path then begins the ascent of the southern side of the Glencullen Valley, climbing towards Prince William's Seat. Close to Prince William's Seat, near a rocky tor known as Raven's Rock, the trail reaches the Glencree Valley, leaving County Dublin and entering County Wicklow. It descends into the valley through Curtlestown Wood We exit Curtlestown Wood and we turn left at this road for Enniskerry which will be 5KM or so away.
