Best guess is its pronounced "Xai Archangel" apparently. If he's not trolling people, which is equally possible.
Gone with the Wind, episodes of Little Britain and Fawlty Towers have been removed from various streaming services due to everyone being extra sensitive to issues of race. I will be honest and say I have never understood the problem with using blackface in comedy as long as it's not reinforcing stereotypes. I understand the problem with the old Black and White Minstrel show etc but some people have a problem with blackface because of historical connotations, regardless of context.
I have no problem with any of what they're doing, of there was something that was actually offensive to half of the world then of course everything should be done to cut it out. As a white male who's never suffered a moment's hardship in life because of who I fundamentally am it's impossible for me to put myself in someone else's position. I do have one concern that if this is deemed to be gone too far in the other direction you play right into the hands of the hard right who will over hype this thing to death. I can see Trump licking his lips at this stuff, further polarisation = votes to him.
Do you think books should be censored too? Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer for example? Mate, half the world is offended by something and very often they are looking for something to be offended by. People are offended by bad language, explicit sex/violence, anything that steps on their religion....you name it. Censoring or editing media entertainment from years gone by is ridiculous. I remember in the early 80's you could watch an 18s cert movie on daytime tv which of course was crazy. But when they introduced the 9pm 'watershed', some went too far and we had Bruce Willis screaming "Yippee Kayaye Kemosabe" at 11pm on ITV. If something is overtly racist or pushing that agenda then I'm all for reigning it in but stuff like Fawlty Towers and Gone with the Wind are works of art in their respective fields. If folks don't like it they can switch it off.
That's what everybody should be worried about, how it impacts the really important stuff. The left have an awful habit of undermining their own arguments and at a time when theres never been more attention on institutional racism, certain elements have decided this is the time to tackle statues and old sitcoms....pure stupidity. I don't particularly care what statue stays up or comes down. I dont care if racist words or blackface stays in or is edited out of sitcoms. None of it makes one bit of difference to my life and I imagine most people feel the same but by making those issues now(even though I think the media carry most of the blame for the second one) the real issue gets pushed to one side for what becomes a culture war. That doesn't just let the actual racists off the hook,it as you rightly point out it reenergises support for Trump and Johnson. Maybe one day everybody on the left realise that winning elections comes in handy when your policies implemented.
This is exactly it just because a section of a population is offended by it lets punish everyone by taking down for everyone, its like is the playground when 1 child is bold the ball taken off everyone then so no one can have fun, thats what it reminds me of.
As I said earlier it's not a big deal to me either way,I loved Only Fools and Horses and Fawlty Towers when words like ni**ers and paki were in it and I've watched them many times since with the words taken out and it didn't spoil the enjoyment for me. At the same time I didn't realise leaving the N word in an episode of Fawlty Towers was so important to so many people.
Is that it? Because we're posting on a site that doesn't allow a certain newspaper to be even mentioned and we're all ok with that.
I'm okay with it because the positives of this site far outweigh the negative of censoring that paper from it. But I think we should be able to post about that newspaper and call it out for being a rag whenever we want. I think the fact we have to call it The S*n is silly but it's not my site or my rules.
But how about just posting links to it that aren't critical of it,just sharing its news? We're all in agreement that rule is correct. We all criticise Liverpool fans who buy it and we're all happy when organisations ban it or end any relationship with it and we're all in favour of the city of Liverpool boycott of it. That's all censorship,so none of us have a problem with censorship in principle.
I personally don't believe that any of it needs to be censored but I come from the privileged position of having nothing which I find reprehensible to my very being. Statues that celebrate slave owners, regardless of the era they existed in seem a bit incongruent with a society which genuinely believes all it's people are ignorant. Does the whole of a show have to be altered beyond recognition just to take the offence out of it, I remember absolutely fume on Facebook when people started suggesting the nursery rhyme "Eeny Meny" might replace the ni**er word with tiger as if this was some great tragedy in their lives. They got so offended about that insignificant change in a nursery rhyme yet the spend their lives giving out about people being offended too easily, the levels of hypocrisy is outstanding. I'm very much a live and let live person, I don't get up in arms about much but I've been trying very hard of late to put myself in the position of a black American with a very obviously racist president elected by a very obviously racist support base who very openly show their disgust for me. Maybe the world needs to show more respect to everyone and if that means removing racism from tv, books and film then so be it, just imagine deciding not to get upset about it and you'd be amazed how little your life will change because of this.
I don't have a problem with censorship in principle but I have a problem with it when it rewrites works of fiction. They should be rewriting the history books instead.
Mate, I'm a very laid back, live and let live bloke too. But everyone has a sore point. So NOBODY FUCKS WITH MY TV SHOWS AND MOVIES! ☺ Nursery Rhymes I will let slide though.
Fair enough but that's a different argument mate and if people are entitled to be angry about the N word being removed from a sitcom because they feel fiction from the past should never be changed, then surely those offended by the racial slurs have just as much right to be angry without it being a sign of PC gone mad? I'll say again it doesn't matter that much to me if it stays or goes but imo the argument for removing it makes more sense than your argument to keep it.
Have to say that particular one at the time really made me tut and shake my head. Most if not all nursery rhymes are basically "dark" at their core, and all have "hidden" meanings (same as most fairy tales are actually tales that make Hostel look PG) with everything from French kings and queens being beheaded - Jack and Jill (although that one is debated still), to murderous Royalty - 3 blind mice, Mary mary quite contrary, Ring around the Roses - the plague!, and Eeny meeny - supposedly a reference to the slave trade. There was a case in USA (shock horror I know) where 2 people tried to sue and airline for emotional distress when they were two on the "pointed at" when the stewardess was attempting to seat people by sing songing - " eeny meeny miney mo, take your seats its time to go" - they were laughed out of court - but just proves the point, some people go out of their way to be offended.
What about those who are offended by explicit sex or violence or blasphemy in fiction? Should they be pandered to as well?
