But backdating basically states that your car was road worthy in a past date, where in fact it may not have been. It actually makes no sense whatsoever to back date. Maybe pay a penalty for each month nct is out over a certain length of time, but backdating is is been raped
The way I understand it is its not saying your car was roadworthy for the months you went without a valid cert, just that it's roadworthy until the date that's a year from when your last NCT ran out.How is paying a fine for every month your car is non compliant any less rapey than backdating?
Nice one Babbs, I wasn't aware that it could be appealed.... agree with you on backdating btw. (See that, more agreement between us )
Your car should be road worthy for one year or two years from the time the car passes the test. At the end of the day, that's the idea of the test. It's about car safety.
Exactly, and backdating means there's no benefit in driving without a valid NCT which means less people do it and increases safety.
But it's about car safety from the date the test was passed. Not for the time the car had no valid NCT
When it was introduced it was about car safety (it was badly needed imo) but has since become an absolute joke, needs to be looked at.
Let's call a spade a spade here mate,we're not really arguing about safety because backdating improves it on both ends. We're arguing about whether somebody who for whatever reason, doesn't get his car NCT'd around the time he's supposed to,should get benefits that the person who's up to date with his doesn't...... and the fair answer is,he shouldn't. My NCT was due in March,I put it in for the test last week.I drove it during that time and have no valid reason for not getting it sorted in March. If they gave me a cert valid until next July,I wouldn't put it in again until September or October. In the meantime my missus who's always on the ball with her NCT is paying more than I am and basically being punished for acting legally and in a safer manner than I do.If there's no backdating, then not only are the roads less safe, then the person who follows the rules is made a sucker of.
Of course Also hypothetically, that car(an 01 Fiesta) that I bought for a grand 5 years ago just for tipping in and out of work, and have only put about 500 euros into in that time, sailed through that NCT without even an advisory. That's some of the best hypothetical money I've ever spent.
Lads, Lets not forget that there are also penalty points and a fine, if you are caught without an up to date NCT... see here Using vehicle (car) without valid test certificate (NCT) Points on payment of the fine: 3 Points on conviction: 5 Fine if paid within 28 days €60 Fine if paid within the following 28 days (i.e Day 29-56) €90 It's an easy one for the Gardai, given how they like to check your road tax and insurance - so the risks of getting caught are probably reasonably high (particularly if you drive at night when they are out checking for drink drivers etc.). Obviously then there's the chain reaction... with more points on your license most likely resulting in higher motor insurance for the following 3 years.
If caught, you are risking impounding of the car....I know that from my wife's hypothetical experience. Left her at the side of the road.
She should have caused a bit of agro, they'd have brought her back to the station, probably given her a cup of tea while pretending they were going to charge her, then let her call you to come pick her up and tell her to be nice to the Gardai in future (in such a hypothetical situation as the one you've outlined above ) Extremely bad form leaving a woman on the side of the road, under any circumstances .... too many scumbags and nutjobs out and about these days for that to be acceptable practice from the Gardai. Impounding the car without notice for failure to display a NCT cert seems a bit OTT ... I think they usually give you 7 days to produce motor tax, or insurance, if you are caught for not displaying either of them don't they (or is that at the Gardai's discretion) ?
They were still there when I collected her and had a great laugh about it. The car (one month overdue) was gone to the pound for the bank holiday weekend (an extra days cost) and of course it was all my fault.....the longest drive home in my life!
Did you ask them to impound herself for the long weekend too? Probably would have been less hassle for ya!
There has been a "back to school" ad running on the radio all week. Surely these absolute shit cunts should be deported.
LOL ... sure the sunshine has gone and it's been pissing rain all day, so why not add to the misery ?
