The Taliban must have been heavily funded for artillery given how quick they took back control?

Most of their funding comes from the drugs trade (heroin, opium etc ) and they also tax the areas they control.
The place is already flooded with weapons and arms.

Afghanistan produces an estimated 90% of the world's heroin.

Was chatting to a lad from Afghanistan. He still has family there.
    His views:
Westerners views of the country and situation are blinkered because of the media.
Democracy was never going to work as 90% of the population are illiterate.
While it was before his time he reckons the monarchy was the best situation for the country. The Taliban is the next best thing. They will keep their promises of relaxing their rules particularly towards women. They want to be seen as being more progressive than before so they can rule with stability and without threat of outside interference from the west.
He is upset however that his country has been 'sold' to Pakistan, politically speaking.
Afghanistan has been in conflict since 1978 and his country is one of barbarians.
    Again, his words not mine.
It's crazy to think the country has been at war with itself for 43 years.

Watching Sean Lock clips all day that are popping up. He was a genius. Plenty of great comedians out there but very few as naturally funny as him. He was probably even better with the off the cuff stuff than he was with the structured stand up.
    May he rest in peace.

Carrot in the boss was outstanding :) He came across as so down to earth with no airs and graces, extremely witty. Himself and Jon Richardson were great together, my sort of humour. May he rest in piece.

So Russia invaded Afghanistan in the 80s. (Dunno why)
Did the US supply the local resistance with arms?
    Then this formed the Taliban.
Then there was Osama bin laden. The 9/11 attacks.
The US went after him. They eventually got him.
Engaged in a war with the Taliban.
Got fed up of it. Too many lives lost. Nothing gained so pulling out.

Alqueda and Isis staged a regin of terrorism to get their own Islamic state.
Is that not what is happening in Afganastan now?

So terrorism got their way in the end.

It's complicated but basically they were allies and when the unpopular communist leader of Afghanistan was killed, Russia went in to help maintain/re-establish communist rule.

Yes, the US backed the resistance but it was years after the war with Russia ended that the Taliban was formed by various factions of that resistance
It's generally reported that the US invaded Afghanistan because the Taliban were protecting Bin Laden. However there are conflicting reports that claim the Taliban were willing to give up Bin Laden in order to avoid a conflict with the US. That deal died when it became clear the US would invade anyway.

AL Qaeda and IS are terrorist groups waging a holy war against the west.
The Taliban are only interested in ruling Afghanistan and bringing peace and stability to a country that would otherwise be consumed by civil war between the numerous warlords.
I would not consider them religous extremists but not terrorists.

Are the Taliban not the same as the Saudis or City Owners minus the oil and private jets?

They are both Sunnis but Taliban more extreme. Uncomfortably so for the Saudis.
Saudis were pro Taliban pre 9/11 but distanced themselves since and are probably not happy with the takeover in Afghanistan.
Pakistan is the Talibans major ally with Russia and China also cosying up for strategic reasons.

    Thanks for clearing that up.
    It's still a mess though.
And news reports suggested to me that it is going to be basically an Islamic state

Fair play to Joe Duffy for naming the vermin like Ben gilroy, Gemma o Doherty etc and the rest of them for the disgusting way they are using false info on many issues around covid and people losing loved ones.

In my opinion, there will be plenty more cases like this in future when children who’s parents posted their photos on social media etc without their consent, will be sued or the large corporations will be

People will see dollar signs but it could open a legal can of worms

Puts a whole new spin on the "here's something to make you feel old" shouts.

Here's something to make you feel old. The baby from the cover of Nirvana's Nevermind is now 30 years old........and a massive prick.
