And she even had to promise not to lead them into another election to keep the votes against her down to that level, again storing up more problems further down the road to keep herself in power. Whatever delusions she had about getting her deal through parliament, (and I still dont believe she thought it had a hope of passing a vote) went out the window with that promise and now she knows there's no mandate for a no deal brexit. So she's 2 choices from where I'm standing, protect herself and let the disaster of no deal happen,or push for the only rational way of ending the deadlock at this stage, another referendum.
Babbs I think your judgement is somewhat clouded on May by some very obvious hatred of her. I'm not saying you're wrong, I honestly don't know her motives but the certainty that you're painting the picture with is hard for me to understand at all, it's like it fits a narrative you have for her.
Do Labour actually want power though? To take ownership of the Tory made (impossible to get out of) mess just as it nears conclusion would be suicide. There are no benefits to being in power at this moment in this moment.
Exactly my thoughts, it’s a poisoned chalice. I am not big into Politics however follow a lot who are on twitter as they are also big reds and to me it’s looks like Corbyn is happy for the whole thing to come crashing down. When it’s all done dusted and country is fcked, he can come in and save the day. At the end of day, you have a large element of England in particular who see still see themselves as part of a great British Empire who also fought of the nazis and saved the world, when in reality it was the US who stepped in. Was a brilliant podcast by Ken Early on Second Captains a few weeks ago on how WWII basically fcked things for England in the long run and in the back of their minds, A lot of population see Brexit as a chance get some of that old British superiority mindset back. That Mogg fella basically acts as if he is from the 1800 when Britain ruled the world. You will now see a whole new breed of politician in the UK pick up his style.
It's very simple to me Ed. She's worked her way up through politics in one of the world's most powerful countries with some of the worlds slippiest politicians and as you often say,the most obvious answer is more often than not the correct one. If she's as inept as so many of her decisions would make her if she really was taking them in what she believed was the countries interests, then I don't believe she'd of managed to do that in the way she has. You also don't get to the top of the Tory party without being a scumbag. If you think that's clouding my judgement then point out the problems in my logic beyond people who know her says she's doing her best for the country because theres very few people on the planet who wont have somebody batting for them in that way, particularly politicians. But then you'll have to explain to me how you've come to the conclusion that how she's handled things is probably as well as anybody could, because the logic that she's that inept but nobody else could of done any better is far harder to understand for me than the idea a Tory PM would put their interests ahead of everything else, especially considering the last one doing exactly that put the UK in this mess. But don't take my word for it,check out some of her governments other policies like universal credit, their sanctions on the disabled or some of her policies as home seceretary and come back and tell me why she deserves the benefit of any doubt.
Corbyn to press ahead with Brexit if they won a General election. The UK is banjaxed and Corbyn is letting a personal viewpoint drive agenda for the whole party!
Gobshites have cost their country thousands of jobs, have cost everyone who invests directly or indirectly in the stock market thousands (per person), and yet they continue to press ahead ....
I'd have to disagree,if anything there's a bit of cult that's developed around him and Kenny never had a principle he wouldn't discard in a second for political gain,if anything some of Corbyns principles are hindering him getting into power. His opposition to Brexit has been woefully inept, probably because his heart isn't in it and it's absolutely stupid for him to think that if he can get into power,he can do more after Brexit than he could if he'd helped stop it,but he inspires loyalty, there's no denying that.
Honestly think couldn't be further from the truth. While I don't agree with his stance on brexit some of his ideas are radical. The elites in the UK are terrified of Corbyn.
Again I'm not sure why you think this labours new members skyrocket on the back of the 'corbyn movement'. He dominated the young vote and they sing his name at concerts. He's probably connected with people more than any UK politician in living memory. I can see why some don't want him but he certainly has connected with his support.
I was at Glastonbury two years ago and he was one of the biggest draws there, people were buzzing about going to see him, it's hard to get that kind of cult following as a politician. If Enda Kenny rocked up at Electric Picnic he'd have been lynched.
and that assumes people were even arsed putting in the effort to do him, he was a fool, but a near harmless fool (mega insult intended btw !)
The stupidity never stops.Tories are being criticised for their message that EU citizens residing in Britain need to pay to register to stay there after Brexit. Their response is to attack the EU for not unilaterally offering a reciprocal agreement for their citizens in the EU. Errrrr, there's a reciprocal agreement in the deal yis spent 2 years negotiating and haven't fuckin voted on yet,and isn't the EU dictating rules to member states one of the reasons you said you're leaving? Now you're attacking them for not instructing member nations on their policy for non EU citizens. What a massive shower of cunts.
What makes you worry is how badly it appears most UK residents are. I don't expect everyone in the UK to be 100% on top of politics, or economics, but surely they should have enough common sense to see when they are about to be right royally rogered and to do something to put a stop to it ?
Labour are 6 points behind the Tories in the latest You Gov poll, that's an absolute disgrace. I agree with the majority of Corbyns policies but his refusal to oppose Brexit is fucking stupid and a huge dereliction of duty for the opposition leader. You could have a packet of meanies leading the party and as long as it opposed Brexit it would have a 10 point lead on the most inept government in living memory, they gave a fucking shipping contract to a company with no history of trading, and no boats FFS and it doesn't even make their top 100 of inept actions. He's proving all his detractors in the Labour party right. Stop saying there's a good Brexit deal you bell end because nobody will ever agree there is unless it's better than what you have as a member of the EU,and that's not possible. There's only bad and worse.
There is a real dilemma from an Irish perspective on Brexit. If the UK does not get hammered for it's decision, polulism, right wing politics and division will continue to rise and it will be to the detriment of everyone. But if they do get hammered, we will feel the full effect of it. Brexit will never be a Y2K type over-reaction but if rules are bent to keep things moving smoothly, the brexiteers will be right in saying it was all scaremongering and there was nothing to fear. Whatever about needing to reform the EU, the fragmentation of Europe if it ultimately falls apart is a far far darker prospect. People are quick to forget that this is the most stable Europe has been in hundreds of years, if not ever....
