People saying football in empty stadiums is pointless. Give us another two months of this shite and we'd be ecstatic if there was a festival of football on with games most days. It would give us all a lift. Liverpool fans more than anyone.
Whether its viable or not we'll see, still a long time away but with the issues being described it seems like the best option that's been put forward yet. It takes away the issue of players contracts expiring and fulfills the need for sorting out the league winner,cl places and relegation places and probably most importantly for the clubs it allows them to meet their TV obligations.Obviously no fans being present is unfair but it's still fairer than not finishing the season. And that the money side of things is the most important thing driving decisions(after health of course) is a sad situation but it's the reality.
It doesn't do anything to resolve the championship and the pyramid beyond that. As I said previously I don't think this will be a PL decision, it will need to involve all the football association's.
I've no doubt there will be massive efforts to coordinate Bob and theres another UEFA meeting this week ,but I can't see the PL letting any other league not being able to find a fix stop them collecting their 100's of millions if they can find one. UEFA have already said they won't interfere in the methods chosen, its only the timeframe they're concerned with and a lot of the EFL clubs will need PL money to survive so its in their interests for the PL to collect. If the EFL had to void their league's then no promotion would mean no relegation which would only strengthen the PL's resolve to get it finished as it would take away the incentive for the relegation threatened clubs to want it voided.
Some German financial guy has done the sums and estimated the difference in cost to the clubs in both England and Germany between voiding the seasons and getting them finished. I cant remember the exact figures but it's something like a 1 billion pound difference in England and 600m in Germany.
Is that assuming that this season is canned and next season goes ahead as planned? I'm just curious as to how much of an impact they're willing to have on next season and at what point finishing this season starts to become a financial liability instead of a gain? Because I think that's ultimately the only consideration they will make.
I honestly dont know how bad the impact on next season would have to be before the balance tipped the other way mate but I reckon they'd be willing to change the whole calendar by months if needs be to protect this seasons revenue. Gary Neville said he's seen a proposal that could push the big leagues schedule next season by 6 months if needs be. So many things to take into account though. A lot of talk about players contracts but that would probably become far less complicated than it seems at the moment if reality dictated it was a problem that had to be solved. You'd also have to wonder how future earnings will be impacted by this crisis. Most of the money they're worried about losing now is guaranteed if they can finish the leagues(TV money, fulfilling sponsorship clauses etc.) Theres going to be less money all around for the foreseeable future. TV companies are taking a big hit,so is big business and it's going to impact football finances. Clubs will be extremely reluctant to leave any money on the table and will be very open to changes to the calendar if that's what's required. They'd have to bail out the clubs in the lower leagues who cant survive for that long with no football but they're probably going to have to do that anyway.
Rory Smith from the NYT made a couple of interesting points on Second Captains yesterday. He was the saying the financial hit for the PL including broadcasting and marketing revenue would be around 1.2bn if the season was scrapped. If they played it behind closed doors that figure drops to just under 200m. There are 1 billion reason why Karen Brady has done a U Turn. He also said the bundesliga was just 1 game short of being paid in full from the broadcasters over there.
See Kevin de Bruyne joining Harold Kane esq in prefering the season to be vetoed. Was just wondering, if UEFA actually held to their guns and any league without a finalized result would be ineligible for European comps next season - would that mean it could be 3 years before City are in Europe? Couldnt see that sitting well with players or management. For their own self interest they'd want this season played to a completion surely
Looks like we might get to officially celebrate after all. Another 20 club conference call on Friday with the aim of a June re-kick-off, albeit behind closed doors. TBH I dont give a monkeys if its behind closed doors, behind a window, or behind Tescos with tape to keep players and fans apart as long as we play and win 2 games and win the title, no arguements, no astrix, no clever arse opposition fans sniggering that even God doesnt want Liverpool to win the league (I have asked several when God became a chinese lab worker but the answer always seems a bit vague)
Fingers crossed it re starts in june.. your spot on, couldnt care if its behind closed doors as long as we get them 2 wins
Ideally it’s starts up in June. But I think it will stop again. All it needs is one player to get it and it’s gone again. if not I’m honestly not bothered once we get it. We all know we’ve it won since the Man Utd game I couldn’t give 2 shites what other fans say.
I bounce rapidly between feeling like we deserve so much better than an asterix beside our win forever for circumstances outside of our control and outside of football entirely. That being said with over 40k dead in the UK (if reports are accurate) there's certainly context to how little it matters how, if or when Liverpool get the title but I will obviously be gutted if we somehow end up without the title.
Without wishing to sound flippant about what is obviously the bigger and more important picture, I have decided that 1. I WILL be claiming number 19 regardless of what happens 2. I will politely inform opposition fans that we were so fcukin good, they had to give us an astrix as well as the title as, the title on its own just didnt seem just reward for being soooooo much better than everyone else
Every club needs football to return as quickly as possible. Unfortunately for lower league clubs , football behind closed doors isn’t going to provide enough revenue to save many clubs unless money is filtered down from the top tier clubs to help. In terms of the Premier league, it will return even if it is behind closed doors. The biggest nonsense is the argument that this season be scrapped and move on to next season. Liverpool , as well as every other club , will be playing behind closed doors for some time to come so why shouldn’t this season be finished behind closed doors just as next season will begin. A magic wand isn’t going to be waved that allows the football to begin back in front of crowds in August. Play the remainder of the season , once it is safe to do so, behind closed doors. I’m sure that Leicester , Sheff Utd and the teams going for Championship promotion are just as eager to get it finished as Liverpool fans are. Liverpool fans aren’t going to be the only victims(as some keep distastefully referencing) should the league be voided.Plenty to be won and lost for lots of teams between now and the end of 19/20 season
