We're not signing a CB to move in ahead of Gomez, he looks a very good centre half with loads of space to improve. I reckon there's maybe a handful of players in the world better than him now and I can't think of any with the potential upside he has but that requires him to continue playing. My opinion is that the next CB that Klopp will be planning on signing will be to replace VVD when he retires or moves on.
My own is that Lovren will move on this summer and Klopp will bring in an extra CB because of Matip/Gomez injury record. I think the 2 young CB's are still too inexperienced at this moment in time,
Matip was arguably our best player over the 2 CL semi finals and final last year and also started off this season in excellent form until he got injured when Lovren then filled in. Gomez then took Lovrens spot after he got injured and has played well since. I would query how Klopp has deemed Matip as 4th choice behind Lovren because on the evidence of the performances on the pitch he is well behind Gomez and Matip imo. Being a popular member of the dressing room shouldn’t be enough.
If you honestly think Klopp is selecting lads for popularity in the changing room then you really don't think very much of him.
I don't get why one player must be singled out for a loss. Its fucking ridiculous. Lovren was shite same as every other liverpool player but he gets 99% of the blame. And people saying they want him out, unless we spend 50 million we're not getting a better centre back than Lovren. It's not that long ago he was being lauded for his performances... Why was he playing well back then? Because he got a run of games. Every time Gomez has missed games through injury his first 3 or 4 games back he has been dodgy. Players need games, you can't expect him to come in and be another Van Djik straight away. As for Troy already auditioning for a job in sky Deeney saying he targeted him? Course he fucking did! Same as every striker avoids Van Djik. Common sense that surely. I said it in the summer when roma were after him and I'll say it again, lovren is in the top 10 centre halves in the league. Not because he's that brilliant but because a lot of the rest are poor.i hope he's here next season.
I personally don't get the over reaction to this. We were due to lose a game at some stage in the league, I mentioned to a mate who is a Leeds fan that Watford would be a problem and based on their xG due to chances created this season they will at some time give a team a good beating, wasn't expecting it to be us. We weren't at the races and all of a sudden the centre back who was keeping everyone out once he got a run a games before getting injured for us is the big problem. Jaysus Matip and Gomez coming back in on first starts back from injury have been poor but not punished because the rest of the team stepped up. Lovren comes in in the same situation and is instantly the reason we lose, WTF. I would be more worried that the Athletico method of defending had been adopted in the last two games by PL teams and we have struggled. Klopp and co. need to put the thinking caps on.
you could probably argue the same about mignolet and goalkeepers but i'm glad he's not with LFC any more.
Champagne Charlie had us down for a 2-1 win. He said beforehand that he kept waiting for us to lose but it we keep pulling out the wins, typical
IMO alot of the animosity for Lovern could be down to his arrogance, especially through his interviews through the years, that one before the WC final ! I mean C'mon ! But mostly down to his rubbish defending.. Look at the game yesterday, Allisson went ape sh*te at him after the 1st goal, even he blamed him, he was more interested in doing a waltz with deeney than intercepting the throw, letting it go over his head. He followed that with a pathetic header that trent then stupidly played back to allison which got intercepted, but before 'Sloth' (aka deeney !) got his goal, both he & trent were as culpable as each other for their non existent attempt to close him down! The last time we were bet by 3 goals???? > tottenham 4 liverpool 1- theres a common dominator! I still haven't erased that one from my memory!
So it's all lovrens fault Sweet jesus get the blinkers off VVD was poor for 1st and 2nd goals and dont get me started on trent for 3rd Again easy target to blame lovren, that's my last post on it as some will still want to pin it on the one they want ......
People have short memories when it suits, and very long memories when it suits. When Lovren got injured after his run of games this season there was a lot of worry about Gomez coming back into the side because he'd be having a tough time and Lovren had been solid like he has been for 90% of his appearances for a long time now. But that's all forgotten when he has a bad game and Spurs 2 and a half years ago becomes far fresher in a lot of peoples minds. As you point out it also gone unnoticed in this case that every centre forward pulls onto whoever's playing with Van Dijk because he's Van Dijk. Deeneys a mouth who craves attention but he's not giving away state secrets. I think he'll go in the summer but while everybody is entitled to their own opinion it's worth noting that Klopp chose him over Matip on Saturday. And Klopp chose to give him a 4 year contract a couple of years ago. And Klopp picked him for 8 or 9 games in a row 3 months ago ahead of Gomez. Nobody has to think Lovren isn't absolutely terrible because Klopp thinks he's a good player but Klopp does think he's a good player. It's fine to disagree with the manager but generally when I'm in disagreement with him I keep open the possibility theres a good chance I'm wrong because he's a football genius and I'm not.
Lovern will always be remembered for his clangers... rather than the few important goals that he's scored. I'm not sure if that's because he's supposed to be a defensive player and some of the mistakes were so bad, or because people have selective memories - probably a combination of both. While he's reduced the screw ups significantly (perhaps down to VDs arrival, perhaps not), a large part of the fanbase will never game confidence in him as one of our CBs.
If people really want a scapegoat they should blame me. My daughter made me a red and white bracelet that I'd been wearing all season but it was falling asunder so I took it off before the Atletico game and we've been poor since. We could also blame her shoddy workmanship but that might be a bit harsh so I'm willing to carry it on my own.
I remember Watford away in 2015 and having to listen to some fella abusing the manager with you German this and you German that so never shocked how quickly a minority of our fans can turn. Looking around online over the weekend the number who have found their keyboards having been offline for a fair few months.
I started the match thread so clearly it's my fault. I will retire from match thread creation for the rest of the season. Soz goys, my bad.
There were less moaning Michaels there on Saturday than in previous years. The majority just accepted that we were having an off day Still no excuse for travelling all the way to Watford and upping sticks with 70-75 minutes on the clock. There were definitely some sharpening their pencils waiting on a result like that just to have a go.
