Just curious, could have been done before on here... For me, my Dad, who had no big interest in football, used to have one of those red generic lunch/messenger bags from the 80's that had 'Liverpool FC' emblazoned across the side (BTW would love to get my hands on one if anyone has it??!) That was all it took to send me on my path, I didnt know who or what they were but gravitated towards the name that began & ended in 'L' & they were my favourite colour, red !! I remember he had a man ure one as well at one stage but i didnt sway from LFC. From there the name was burned into my memory & when I got into football in the coming years I looked into LFC & they happened to be the best team around & had a few Irish players in the team along with a deadly strikers named Ian Rush & King Kenny!!
For me was 8 and in 1993, was liking the look of Aston Villas away kit and Dean Saunders but my uncle kept pushing me towards Liverpool. Thank Christ he kept at it and I took them on despite an major success. I revelled in the 1995 league Cup win though
Funny thing about liking teams because of the kits because I remember making the decision that I preferred Liverpool red to scum red I was also 8 and liked the red kit of Liverpool and Bruce G in goals. But I also liked Newcastle's black and white stripes with the big star in the centre and Kevin Keegan to boot. When they faced each other in the league I couldn't choose who I wanted to win so I let fate decide that I would only follow the winner. Without doubt the most important Liverpool win for me.
26th of march 1983. my memory is not great, I don't have a lot of childhood memories but this one is welded in my brain. my only earlier memory of football is marco tardelli scoring in the world cup final in 82 and THAT reaction. I was mad in to playing football but didn't have a team but the 83 league cup final changed all that. it was a Saturday (not sure if the league cup finals were all played on a Saturday back then) and I watched it in the house with my da and grandda. not sure if it was the red jerseys or that Liverpool won or that the fella that scored the winner came from only up the road but I was hooked there and then. I often wonder what might've been if the other shower had won but i'd like to think the redmen would still have won my heart. I've no memory of Liverpool winning the league that year, just that one game. the dubs won the all Ireland that year too and that was magic and I always remember there was a big hype around bohs that year too, they lost the cup final that year but I was a big bohs fan for a long time after that. 1983 was a good year.
I remember being really young and following my brother who was a West ham fan. They were decent at the time, I'd imagine mcevennie and cottee maybe were there? The brother got the hump one day and told me I can't support them anymore so I had to move on. I can't remember how it can to pass that I picked Liverpool but it could easily have just been a glance at the league table and picked who was on top. This would have been around '86ish.... Thank god I didn't move clubs when Norwich were going well... I remember watching the Wimbledon Cup final, the arsenal Friday night Michael Thomas game and Hillsborough.... Weird I've no memory of them winning the league in 90. It could easily have been another team... Thank god it all worked out...
My memory is nobody really followed football in my house. 90% of the people in my class at school followed utd back in 1994/95 my cuisin moved into my house for a couple of months in for collage as his family lived in mayo, I only started following Liverpool because of him he bought me my first Jersey for Christmas and I never looked back my best memory as a kid was the Coca-Cola cup final we beat the manks. I still thank him to this day .
I can remember watching my Dad in a pub in Bundoran going ballistic with everyone else as Ray Houghton put the ball in English net and then Ronnie Whelan scored a wonder goal a few days later and from then on it was Shoot, Match, football stickers. They played for Liverpool and that it was. There wasn’t a lot of live football those days so it was all about those magazines and the Cup. Following season was a tragic one with FA Cup semi on tv. I can remember that day so clear, even as 9 year old, I knew something absolutely terrible had happened. Recall Arsenal clinching the title at Anfield watching it with my Granda. The 90 Cup Semi final against Palace sticks out as does the 92 one with Ronnie Whelan scoring against Portsmouth. It’s mad how central the cup games are Despite LFC being best team in league. Couple that with Italia 90 with a strong Liverpool contingent, there was no way back at that stage. Liverpool travelled to Ireland a good bit back then and my Dad took me to all those games, he’d find out where they were staying and we’d get to the see the players as we’d nip into the bar for food and then magically bump into them. For my 40th, my sister did up a scrap book of pictures and between 10-16, every picture I had either a Liverpool jersey or tracksuit on.
I'm the same, remember cup games more from back then. They were shown live more maybe? Just thinking back off the live game coverage back in the day. Sports stadium on rte showed 3pm Saturday games a lot with George Hamilton and Johnny Giles commentating. The excitement if Liverpool were on! Seeing a game live was such a treat comparing to now. I'm not sure where it came from back in the late 80s cos we hadn't a pot to piss in but we had a bbc aerial. ITV showed live games on a Sunday, I remember trying to tune the bastard in every week to get any kind of picture but usually failed. Sundays in rural Ireland in the 80s were fairly bleak, especially in the winter...
1974 FA cup final. V Newcastle. First game I remember watching live.Said id follow the winner. Became a big fan of Keegan.
Had family in Huyton, and spent a few summers in the Aunts house. Funny that in her street, her house was about the only Liverpool supporting house, the rest were all blue....that couldve ended badly! So I was introduced to supporting Liverpool in my "formatative years" and never looked back. Got my first shirt, which is still hidden away somewhere, in 73 - A Uefa cup commemorative shirt.
Same here ! We were in Spain on holidays & it was on in a pub / cafe, that we were walking past. The commentary was in Spanish, but you could recognise players names - Keegan, McDermot, Highway. I made my parents stop & watch it. It was the coolest thing ever. My Dad is a massive Arsenal fan (as are my 4 brothers) - so it didn't go down well with him. I think I have my mother to thank.
Arent Irish mammies great? I'm 49, and every single year at Christmas, my Mam gets me the Liverpool annual and Liverpool Calander
The country went mad for italia 90, i was 6 and that was what got me hooked on the game. Houghton, Whelan and Stan all playing for Liverpool was what started me off, just after we most recently won the league. But a few months from now ........ it's DEFINITELY OUR YEAR
my dad was and is a big fan. He used to travel over in the 70's and there's a photo of him at home hanging from one of the goals in Anfield.
Two of my neighbours had family from Liverpool. I will always remember one of them changing their washing machine and fridge to Candy because they were on the shirts. I don't remember how or when I began supporting them, but I suspect this played a part because all my family are Utd. The earliest matches I remember are the cup games in 1988 and 1989, also remember watching us beat QPR to win the league, Ronnie Rosenthal scored. I made my confirmation on the day of the semi in 1991, I ran home without photographs to see Ronnie Whelan equalise in the last minute.
Ha Ha, the LFC program for the recent Tottemham match showed a pic of Kenny and and a very young Kelly Dalglish wearing Hitachi sponsored kit. In the piece accompanying the picture it said Hitachi were 'famous for their washing machines'. I don't think so.
Sum content of my football coverage growing up was the 3pm live games on Sports Stadium & late night radio games on Radio 5 (couldn't get any medium wave reception for daylight games!). Ronnie was mostly injured at the time, but with Stan at left back and Ray Houghton playing regularly it meant Liverpool were chosen for the TV game at nearly every opportunity by the wise heads at RTÉ. Cup finals of 89 and 92 were great memories. Even the Macca league cup final against Bolton was a great day after the Souness years. Something magic too about those night time games from Anfield on the radio with Jimmy Armfield, Ron Jones, Alan Greene etc Cup comebacks were the best. All time favourite radio highlight was a UEFA Cup game against Auxerre. Mark Walters I think getting the winner after being 2-0 down from the first leg in France. Being so mediocre in the league in those years I think meant those cup nights were what we lived for back then!
