Very true Bob but would probably have accepted last week's one had the same ref not turned down a similar incident last night.
Seen today De Gea has made more saves than any other keeper. I've no idea of he has had a lot more shots.
We're in serious danger of averaging less than a goal a game conceded in the league if this clean sheet lark continues, 20 in 18 now. That hasn't happened since Rafa was manager, going in the right direction.
http://www.skysports.com/football/n...d-defencemnf-extra-how-klopp-improved-defence Good piece by Carra. Shows the vast improvement since Spurs game
Jaysus that first 9/last 9 game comparison is like night and day, 4 goals conceded in 9 games is league winning form.
Errors leading to shots down to 1 (assuming this is Lovren' head melt vs Everton?) in the last 9 game vs 7 errors leading directly to goals in the 1st 9 games is a massive positive. Now in fairness we've rode our luck at times too, Defoe miss as an example. But its clear there has been a big overreaction to our defensive issues.
Sorry mate, but I do not agree. Our defensive problems are long term, they didn't just happen for a brief spell earlier this season. Just reflect back at the number of goals conceded compared with most of the other Top4 contenders over the last two seasons.... we below average across the teams that matter.
After that showing tonight Garrett, you're probably right! Yet for alot of that game we dealt with Arsenal well. There is an obvious weak mental issue with the defensive aspects in this side when any pressure is put. Personnel like Van Dijk won't fix it entirely that's for sure.
Not to mention a badly needed upgrade on Mignolet. Tough position to nail down nowadays but we can do better no doubt than having Mig and Karius.
Listening a few pods this week and a lot of stats about recent clean sheets and all. Problem is when someone makes a mistake like Gomez last night everyone loses the head.
My take on it too Gary, not sure how you fix that. We just go bananas under the slightest hint of pressure. It's actually bizarre yo watch. Anyway we need better finishers if Klopp has any hope with us because he cannot fix our defensive stupidity but we should have had 6/7 last night so I blame our offensive players.
The way to fix is buy better players. Granted VVD or Franco Baresi would not have made Gomez attack the ball for Sanchez goal or help the calamity keeper tip the second over the bar. Gomez has been solid in most games but when you have three constant liabilities in first choice back five, you will get games like Spurs, Sevilla and last night.
That first goal is the price you pay for bringing young players through. It's why no academy players make it at some other clubs. The only he'll learn and grow as a player is by making these type of mistakes. You can see him looking over his shoulder and seeing Sanchez 15 years away but Sanchez done what all good strikers do and timed his run
VD doesn't seem to have been playing at his best this season from what I can gather, but that said I think he'd still be an improvement on what we have. We need 2 x CBs, a keeper and possibly a better LB (jury is out about Robertson for me, no confidence in Moreno's defensive abilities). Hopefully Clyne will be back soon for RB, then competition for that spot between himself and the two younger lads will keep us ok there. Spot on mate !
Play Karius for the rest of the season and see what hes made of. Mignolet we know has these bloopers in him and unfortunately that isnt going to change. Tell Karius hes no1 until the end of the season. If hes not up to it then we must buy in the summer.
Not excusing our defense by any means, Gomez learned (hopefully) a valuable lesson in that he cant just assume the ball will drop on his head when you have quality players (no matter how bad they have been to that point) playing against you. If you dont make the first move, you can be totally assured the opposition will. As for Mingolet - well it no longer surprises me when he drops a clanger, its not going to change. Dont really know if VVD is (hopefully) going to be the "glue" to put our defense together. Is he an organiser? Will he scream at the others to move like say a Carra? Because to me it seems obvious that nobody is leading the backline and that has GOT to change or the fantastic attacking talent we have are going to say "to hell with this, dont matter if we score 3/4/5 with the keystone kops behind us", and head off somewhere where the defense at least look like theyve met before. Back to the non excusing of the defense.... Our midfield did no favors at all for the backline the other night. The amount of times Mane, Can and Milner let their men just run off them was criminal. It led to two of the three goals. It honestly looks at times like we have two five a side teams on the pitch - one lot playing (term used loosely) at defending while the other one is only interested in attacking. We have the all attack and high press bit down, but Klopp has got to get the whole team to defend as a unit as well.
Not true. De Gea was also young and had a v tough time at start of career with the Scum. He made more mistakes than Karius and is now the best keeper I'm world. Way too soon to be writing of his Liverpool career. What we all agree on is Mignolet is a lost cause.
