Of course I had read months back about the Can contract being 'not about money.' I did not realise there was actually an audio interview of him saying this, from 15/03/2017. https://audioboom.com/posts/5709737-it-s-not-about-money-emre-can-on-liverpool-contract-stand-off
RTE commentary on this afternoon's match in Sochi, Ronnie Whelan very quick to highlight some poor play by Can in the first half of the match, zero praise for any positive play in the second half.
Can's recent comments about Salah's arrival and looking forward to playing with him would suggest he's intending to stick around....
We'll need two decent players for every position next season, I can't see Can going unless he jumps, he won't be pushed out.
I really think liverpool will tie him down to a long term contract after the Confederations Cup, he is still a relatively young player and the second half of last season he really managed to string a good run of form together. Add this to the fact Henderson's injury record and Lucas advancing years/possibility he could be moving on. Common sense would state we offer him a new contract to ward off interest from clubs sniffing a bargain
Hi, It doesn't seem to be a case of us not wanting to keep him, or not having made him an offer - it seems to be a case of him having been dragging his heels on signing a new deal. He's previously indicated that it's not money that's bothering him, so I'm assuming it's game time and position on the pitch. I felt that he did the right thing for the second half of last season, having come out of a period of poor play (apparently he was playing with an injury for quite a while), he kept the head down and delivered several very good performances towards the tail end of the season - perfect, in terms of what you want from a professional footballer (no whinging, no agro or pretending to be sick, or only putting in a part shift etc.) The problem now is, he's down to his last 12 months (or thereabouts) of his current contract - so if he's not signing a new deal pronto, then by default we have to sell him rather than see him go on a free in a year's time... and lose out on a decent transfer fee (I'd guess that he's a €25m-€35m player at the moment). We also need to be able to make solid plans for next season, so we can't be left hanging on much longer because if we need to bring in a replacement, then the faster we start working on that the better.
Fantastic touch for the first goal but that touch for the ball he took out of the sky in the second half was incredible.Thats a tougher skill than his finish for his goal there last season. He didn't have a very good game but you have to respect quality like that.
Thought he had a better game than Henderson or Wjnaldum although that was not saying much. Himself and Henderson in the same team could be an issue long term in that formation.
Even (if) with coutinho staying we need better footballers in midfield. The 3 today don't have even close to enough about them. All huff and puff but little quality. Jesus, go back in for Keita,do something, go after someone. It looked stale today in the first half and that's the first game of the season. New players don't just hopefully improve the squad but it should give everyone a lift. We need a lift.
Been a few suggestions on the transfer thread lately about the length of contract players are given. A few suggested that there would be much shorter contracts for players in the future, with clubs not concerned if players run down their contracts because of all the money in the Premier League. I must admit this idea had never occurred to me, Can not signing a new contract to date was something that concerned me, as I felt the club would have to offload the player in this window if he did not confirm his future to the club. Perhaps he wants guaranteed CL group stage football, I still think he is at a very good club for the player to be noticed on a weekly basis by the German football team manager in this season prior to a World Cup.
That's a very good point Lionel, but one would assume that he wants assurances around game time and perhaps also CL football (as you mention), to ensure he gets noticed. My feeling is that if he keeps playing as he has done (overall, excl. the period when he was injured but playing near the start of the year) then he'll get his game time, but perhaps he's concerned about time because of Hendo's return, Gino and possibly a new midfielder coming in ? Personally, I think Can still has more to come and we need to hang on to him.
Well now, he has got Champions League group stage football. Will he now sign a new contract? He previously said money was not the issue.
Shows some real brilliance at times Amazes me the stick he gets I games and others get such a free ride Hopefully he signs and becomes more consistent
He makes the difficult looks easy which is always the sign of top quality. He would be first midfielder I'd pick out of the lot of them.
