The fact that the President in Ireland does not have the much power means it’s doubtful Casey could do much damage, but don’t get anyone’s logic in voting for him. I am not even talking about his outspoken views, he came across as someone who did for a laugh in the debates.
What is his constituency? It's hard to get elected without a party behind you but money will help. I don't believe he could get elected in Ireland.

I suppose it depends what you consider damage.Him getting elected basically on the back of saying be doesn't like travellers would do quite a bit of damage to political discourse in a country where far right tactics and politics haven't really taken hold.It would be open season on minorities and the lower classes in campaigns going forward. Its would also make the office of President a freak show . Once you set the precedent that meritocracy doesn't matter we might as well run an X factor style competition rather than have an election. It's a job that requires a level of intellect,diplomacy and respect for the office to do it well,and once we decide we don't if the job is done well,then we may as well have Dustin doing it. If Casey voters were really desperate for a president who's not afraid to say what he thinks on a subject and stick to his guns,they already had one in Higgins.Hes taken flack for 2 years for his comments on Castro that had no real personal benefit for him.Of course it's absolute bollocks that Casey was standing up for anything.He made a populist comment because he was at 1% in the polls and then suspended his campaign for 2 days but when people say "I respect him because he's not afraid to say what he thinks",what they generally mean is "I like him because he said something I wanted to hear". Tell a Casey supporter with an ugly bird that his missus is ugly and see if he respects you for it.
I think Ireland does tend to work a bit differently, speaking on national matters does little on a constitituent level but it does give him a platform I suppose. I don't think he'd be bothered with the ins and outs of being a politician in Ireland, it pays very little and he'd have no aspirations for a cabinet position.
Apparently it was worth 21% to Casey based on exit polls. Maybe the right will make grounds in Ireland after all if it's that easy. What has the public so incensced about modern society abd what they view as being PC?
A real RTE exit poll suggests that Higgins will be only the 2nd president to be elected to serve a 2nd term with 58.1 per cent of the vote. Casey 2nd 20.7 Ni Riada 7.4 Freeman 6.3 ( costly election for her as would need 12.5 to recoup her costs) Gallagher 5.5 and Duffy 2.0

30 to 35% turnout is appalling, only a presidential election and a needed referendum to change out of date legislation but low turnouts are bad. Amazing how Irish voters pick and chose when they want to exercise their right to vote, anyone know what the turnout was for same sex marriage referendum? I think as a nation we are not educated enough about what our vote means and why we should always exercise our right to cast our vote regardless of the issue.
Does 65% of the electorate not bothering to vote not send a message that the president means f all to the huge number of people? If the option to scrap the presidency was on the ballot then the turnout would have been a lot higher.
