Who made the difference in your club's season? Who lived up to all expectations like a sausage sandwich after a big night out? And who flopped like Pele without viagra? Below, the setanta.com office has joined forces to pick our success stories and disappointments of a quite gripping campaign, feel free to congratulate us on our genius or destroy us for our cluelessness using the comments box below. LIVERPOOL Player of the season: Xabi Alonso. Steven Gerrard may have picked up the Football Writers' Player of the Year crown, but Alonso was the brains behind Liverpool's title charge all season long. Pulling the strings and creating acres of time for himself on the ball, Alonso brought the best out of his nine other outfield team-mates as The Reds coped for lengthy periods without both Gerrard and Torres. Young player of the season: Emiliano Insua. Looked so good at times this season that it was hard not to label him Liverpool's best left back. A big future beckons, although the same cannot be said for the £7 million Italian he rendered surplus to requirements. Best signing: Albert Riera. Provided some much needed width before fading a little in mid-season. A delicate touch on the ball but Rafa Benitez will need to bring in better quality than Riera if The Reds are to take the final step next season. Worst signing: Robbie Keane. Signed to feature in a 4-4-2, it soon became apparent that Liverpool's best formation was not 4-4-2. More bafflingly though, Keane's touch drew comparisons to Erik Meijer, while his prowess in front of goal made Afonso Alves look prolific. Disappointment of the season: Ryan Babel. Why is he not destroying defences? Has all the raw materials, pace, power, a thumping shot, some decent skills...all the raw materials to mirror Thierry Henry. Unfortunately for Liverpool a footballing brain is yet to emerge - he should have been the difference in the title race. Moment of the campaign: 4-1 at Old Trafford. There used to be nothing worse than having a DVD with a scratch on it that made the disc skip. But for United's 2008/09 season review, memories of being smashed 4-1 on your own patch by your fiercest rivals will sour a title winning year.
Would agree with a lot of that. Never thought last Summer that I'd end up agreeing that pound for pound Robbie Keane was an awful signing but goes to show what I know. 4-1 win at Old Trafford and Babels winner at home to the same knobs, would be my 2 favourite moments of the season. Maybe Benayouns winner at Fulham up there as well, I went ape when that went in
