Un-bel-ievable - this guy who hails from BIFFO Cowen's home town of Clara in Co offaly is presently leading the Irish Open - he's 7 under after 10 holes today and is 12 under for the Tournament. Her's hotly tipped to make this years Walker Cup team vs USA ...
I had backed McDowell for top Irish player. Was +5 yesterday. Shot 11 under today and is now 6 under for the tournie.
He played with a friend of mine on the UCD team, he backed him the other day at 250 to one!!me brother reckons he knows the course inside out
smashing lil player alrite.... poor auld padraig though....awesome stuff from mc dowell too....what a round
some fella from offaly had 300 hundred euro on him but the bookie messed up the slip 1000/1 instead of 100/1!!has to put to win it now!
even if he wins the bookie doesn have to pay out and prob wont at those odss, he'll get 100/1 if he wins.
they said on the telly a few mins ago that he was 3,000-1 to win the tournament at the start. holy jaysus!
some fabulous golf by lowry to win it. Unlucky with that put but the rescue club to the centre of the green at the start of the pay off was unbelievable......... Fair play to him..
Unbelievable achievement for an amateur, even though he got no prize money he will be a wealthy man off the back of this. I'd imagine its now a case of 'when' and not 'if' he turns pro. If he really was a 3,000-1 outsider I'm sure there were a few friends who stuck a few bob on him and got lucky.
He wont turn pro until he plays in the walker cup in about 6 months id say, some session in offaly tonight id say, anyone notice that any time they showed brian cowen he missed the putt to win!?
How does a golfer just turn pro...?I always taught they had a qualifying school were you had to earn your spot on the tour.
I think basically anyone can turn pro once their handicap is low enough. However that doesn't guarantee a tour card, that has to be earned at tour qualifying school as far as I know. Not sure how todays win would affect Shane Lowry being able to qualify for the main tour. Whether he would be exempt from having to qualify I don't know.
as far as i know he is exempt for two years from the qualifying school. i think the top 150 in europe ok and the others have to re earn their stripes so to speak
That was fantastic, great buzz and will probably never happen again, he may opt to play in the Walker Cup (Amateur Ryder Cup) but would be mad to do that he can relax now and play golf for the next two years and try get some of that 500,000 back, some people bet on him to finish top six, i think it was -quarter odds . . .
