I very much doubt Rafa's after Forlan. I reckon there were Liverpool officials spotted in Madrid with Athletico's people. And the press have tried to put 2 and 2 together and have come to the conclusion that Liverpool are after Forlan. Forlan said yesterday that any transfer speculation regerding him is rubbish made up by the press

Liverpool have targeted Manchester United old boy Diego Forlan in a £15m swoop.
The Old Trafford flop has been a hit in Spain after quitting United in 2004.
And now Rafa Benitez is set to give the Atletico Madrid star a second chance to prove himself in the Premier League.
Starsport revealed yesterday how Liver-pool wanted to bring Valencia winger David Silva to Anfield.
The Spanish chief has had his scouts all over La Liga as he looks to boost his attacking options for next season, and Forlan has been watched constantly.
And the 29-year-old last night admitted that he feels he has some unfinished business in the Premier League after his miserable spell with United.
During his three years at Villarreal, though, he scored one goal every other game, earning him a £20m move to Atletico two years ago.
This season he is only one goal behind Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o in a race to be Spain’s leading scorer this season after hitting the target 29 times.
Liverpool have watched him at recent games against Real Betis, and last weekend’s match against Espanyol when Atletico won 3-2 after coming from behind with 10 men.
Benitez feels Forlan would be a perfect foil for Fernando Torres — a former Atletico Madrid favourite.
The two clubs have an excellent relationship after the £27m purchase of Torres two years ago.
And Forlan’s agent Daniel Bolotnikoff has confirmed that Atletico have a massive offer on the table from an English club.
Forlan – who is also on Barcelona’s radar – says he will decide on his future in the summer.
He said: “At the moment my desire is to score goals, to fight for the Golden Boot and to help Atletico to get a position in the Champions League.
“I will think about my future in June. I want a meeting with the directors and then to evaluate the situation.
“Do I want to return to the Premier League? In the world of the football anything is possible and I believe I have a debt with England after my time at Manchester United.”
Liverpool lead chase for Diego Forlan

Forlan is firing in La Liga after a forgetful spell with Manchester United, a club he left in 2004, and Rafael Benitez has been looking into a possible £15 million swoop for the striker.
The Uruguayan believes he has unfinished business in England. He said: "At the moment my desire is to score goals, to fight for the Golden Boot and to help Atletico to get to a position in the Champions League.
Sir Alex Ferguson wary of Barcelona's Champions League threat"I will think about my future in June. Do I want to return to the Premier League? I believe I have a debt with England after my time with Manchester United."
Earlier this month Spanish title race leaders Barcelona were reportedly interested in signing Forlan as a replacement for the possible departures of Cameroon international Samuel Eto'o and Frenchman Thierry Henry.
Forlan, 29 and contracted to Atletico till 2011, would cost 36 million euros according to a clause in his contract.
The former Manchester United striker, scorer of 23 goals this season and the leading scorer in the 2005 season, joined Atletico from Villarreal in 2007.
Forlan let it be known at the end of January he was keen to leave and join a club with whom he could win titles.
He said: "At the moment my desire is to score goals, to fight for the Golden Boot and to help Atletico to get to a position in the Champions League.
"I will think about my future in June. Do I want to return to the Premier League? I believe I have a debt with England after my time with Manchester United."

Liverpool boss Benitez targets Manchester United flop Forlan in £15m swoop

Comments (0) Add to My Stories Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is set to give Manchester United Diego Forlan a second chance to prove himself in the Barclays Premier League after lining up a £15m bid for the Atletico Madrid frontman.
The Uruguayan striker was sold by United to Villarreal in 2004 after finding the net only 10 times in 63 appearances in two seasons at Old Trafford.
However the 29-year-old has become a hit in Spain - scoring 54 goals in 103 games at Villarreal before moving to Atletico for £20m in 2007.

Red hot: Striker Diego Forlan has scored 29 goals for Atletico Madrid this season
He has hit 29 goals this season and is only one behind Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o in the race to be Spain's leading scorer.
His form has persuaded Benitez to give Forlan a chance to resurrect his career in England, reports The Daily Star.
The Liverpool boss believes Forlan could be a perfect striker partner for Fernando Torres.
Forlan, himself, has admitted he has unfinished buisiness in the Premier League.
He said: 'At the moment my desire is to score goals, to fight for the Golden Boot and to help Atletico to get a position in the Champions League.
'I will think about my future in June. I want a meeting with the directors and then to evaluate the situation.
'Do I want to return to the Premier League? In the world of the football anything is possible and I believe I have a debt with England after my time at Manchester United.'
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1181544/Liverpool-boss-Benitez-targets-Manchester-United-flop-Forlan-15m-swoop.html
Diego Forlan has committed himself to Atletico Madrid and refused to speculate about his future.
The Uruguay international has been linked to many Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, Tottenham and Sunderland.
But the prolific striker, who has bagged 27 goals in 30 games so far this season, is happy at the Vicente Calderon.
The former Manchester United ace has criticised Real Madrid, saying that they launch transfer rumours to disturb players.
“There are rumours in the newspapers,” he said. “I remain pretty much relaxed as I am under contract and want to qualify for the Champions League.
“The transfer speculations are something that you, the press, do on behalf of Real Madrid. As far as we are concerned we are focused on the Valencia game.”

Aguero and Torres cant play together in the season they had partnering each other Torres had 15 goals from 40 games and Kun had 7 goals in 42 apps, the folloiwing year without Torres Aguero scored 28 times in 48 games with 9 assists.

yeah I know I remember. It takes time for these things to happen. Kun has 2 years more experience now. They're both clever players and would without a doubt be lethel together
Forlan has 43 goals in 66 games for atleti. Not a bad record

Was that year with Torres Aguero's first year in the first team, if so its only natural that a player develops as he gets older and not specifically because he didn't click with Torres. From watching a bit of spanish football this year i have to say that he's one of the highlights for me, unfortunately the fee for him would be in the Man City bracket!
As for Diego Forlan i don't know what to think, his agent claims there is a massive bid in from and english club (could he say that if it wasn't true or can agents do as they please). Personally i think he would be a massive flop again but Riera has been very impressive at times this season after a terrible stint at city a few years back.

Aguero would be about 25M I reckon. They might take Lucas or Babel as part of a deal. Aguero's a big Liverpool fan and he wanted to sign with us before but Rafa wouldnt sign him because they wanted 18 million for him and he was still only at youth level. Rafa said its harder for youths to break through in EPL so I can see his point. Thats why he ended up at Athletico because they paid the 18 for him. He's been left in the stands for a good part of this season and it't no secret he's looking at leaving in the Summer. Torres advised him recently that its time he got himself to a bigger club. So far as I know they're still great friends

Lads realisitcally I don't think we're going to be signing Aguero, Tevez or any other world class striker. We have a proven winning formula in Nando up front with Stevie G behind him, why try and mess with that?. In my mind what I think Rafa will try and do is have a striker in reserve who if neccessary can come off the bench and be effective, or play where Nando plays if he's injured. Forlan is 29 now and might just be happy to fill a role like that.
A 22 year old hot striker like Aguero or Bojan or any other names mentioned aren't going to want to sit on our bench ... that's why I think we're being linked with older more experienced strikers, maybe I'm wrong but it makes sense if you think about it.

Lads I think the thing you are missing talking about signing another player in the 'Torres' league is that Rafa has that 4-4-1-1 locked in and he will absolutely not go back to 4-4-2 to accomodate a second striker as he showed with Keane its fit in or fcuk off. Its Gerrard behind Torres and that isnt going to be messed with
We are not going to be able to get a top tier striker to sit on the bench waiting for Torres to get injured or needs to be rested. Forlan has been prolific in Spain, has learnt and would be solid back up to Torres and is at the age second fiddle may be acceptable at a top side. So he failed at the Mancs that doesnt mean he would fail with us we play a totally different type of game to them. Remember Torres was anything but prolific in Spain and look at him now.

I think that 4-4-1-1 is too vulnerable as its shown this season. Another top class stiker doesn't mean that 4-4-1-1 can never be played again. It would give us options. Sometimes Torres or Gerrard can be having a bad game and its just not going our way. Another top striker would give us options to change things around. There's 60 games a season after all and Gerrard and Torres can't play them all. I can't see anybody signing for the club purely to be Torres's backup. If we did get someone who would be happy to sit on the bench, he would probably never be match fit

Forlan has been consistantly good over the last number of years.
Better then Aguero this year if you ask me. Potential, its Aguero no doubt but in terms of attainability its Forlan all the way

Frolan turns 30 this week and they'll be looking for 15-17m for him i reckon which is way too much for a 30yr old (not being ageist just realistic), for a guy who didnt cut it in the prem before. Yes he's banging in 25-30 goals a season at the moment in la liga but morientes is a case in point. was prolific enough at madrid, flopped in the prem and banged in 20+ the next season back in spain. i think he's better than people in england give him credit for but just a bit too expensive at that age

Badman, i do agree it is too much money for a 30 year old especially after keane.
But for a cut 10m or less( unlikely i know) id go for it in a heartbeat I just think the disrespect shown to him on here is poor.
Also for Torres working off Aguero, that didnt exactly happen the one season they played together now did it??

less than 10m i reckon he's worth a punt cos he is prolific, hard working and good finisher with both feet. but i just feel they'll be looking for way too much (prob close to 20m) and i think thats too much. but i agree with naughtb4 - i thin k he's getting very unfair criticism on here at times. he's damn better than ngog, voronin, cisse. baros et al who weve had over the years. if he was three years younger i'd say hed be top of rafas list

No matter who Liverpool or any top club look for it drives up the players value, some clubs that have 'new money' (man city) may even follow other clubs in order to evaluate a player i.e if Liverpool are after him he must be worth a look at? There will be lots of speculation and rumours some of it instigated by a club only for suprise to occur when deals are complete, we may be posting 'holy shit we just got player X, when were we looking at him? he could be class . . . Forlan could be a red herring and there will be many . . . .

he could also technically play in any of the three withdrawn roles.
That said i dont think we are in for him and it is just the papers rehashing old news due to
1. Rafa being after a striker (not even definite)
2. Atlethi having possible money troubles if they do not make the champions league

Forlan Since Leaving Man Utd
Spain (Villareal/Atlethi) 220 games 113 goals
Djemba Djemba in the same time has played for such giants of the game as Qater SC and OB amassing less then 50 games.
I agree the similarities are amazing

Apart form just dissing him as being an ex manc, there is a lot on here would happily take on Tevez and he is currently playing for them Forlan since he went to Spain has scored 97 goals in 169 games. Torres scored 82 in 214 in Spain before he joined us. Past records dont automatically equal future endevors, Riera for example was a nobody at Man City then comes to us for his second spell in England and looks a totally different player.

yes but riera was 6 million whereas forlan seems to be in the 15 million bracket for a 29 year old who badly needs a haircut itwould make me sick if he was t the club i cant stand him, riera has been great value for money and how about this for a stat for you
Morientes 330 games in spain 124 goals
liverpool 41 games 10 goals
Forlan
Scum63 games 10 goals and he seemed to like to score against us
however hes stats for spain are imprevvise some players are just not goon enough for the premier league
spain 169 games 97 goals

I guess this is where we differ. If your problem is with the potential price tag fair enough if not you seem to be implying that just over one in three is now as good as over one in two is it?
I never had a problem with him despite his goals against us. He always seemed like an honest player who wasnt given enough game time.
We wont be gettin him anyways

Paul Ince?

i hope to god not.
It is a nice position as a Liverpool fan to be able to say that if we start next season with the same group of players I would be reasonably confident. Now if only i was as confident of that happening.....
Paul Ince?
Exactly
We don't need to go through that again
And we made him bloody captain :(

A fine 2nd half hat trick for Forlan tonight. He is now just ahead of E'to as the seasons top scorer in La Liga.

would be good back up for torres if we got him cheap imo cant complain with being top scorer in la liga

If you watched the Spanish league at all you'd know that Forlan is shit hot at the moment. His finishing is immense. He's every bit as good as Eto'o and a better goalscorer than Aguero, yet almost every second Liverpool fan you meet would cream themselves if we signed the aforementioned two. He's also far more experienced than in his last stint in the premiership. He'd be a brilliant signing and personally I couldn't give a rats arse that he's an ex-manc if he chipped in with the extra goals to win us a title. Ditto for Tevez.

Agreed history is history im sure everyone would forget his manc past if we won the league next year and he scored 15-20 goals

Up there with etoo and the other top scorers in spanish league but i cant see him ever comming to liverpool and i just wouldnt like him at the club to be honest.
He didnt make it at united and he will never make it in an english top team, premiership is way to physical for him hence why he is top man in spain.
I appreiate what he does in spain and he is scoring some great goals with at madrid but he can stay there to be honest.

Not sure if Id feel right about him playing for us or not. I remember him ,and phil neville who was warming up and taking quite a bit of stick, laughing right in my face after he scored THAT goal with the help of jerzy!
But that aside I did take note of comments about him in last weeks la liga match on sky that he had scored something like 28 goals with 14 with his right foot,13 with his left and 1 header. Not to be sniffed at AND he did tie for the european golden shoe with henry a couple of seasons back so its not just as if he has one good season.
I just dont know how I would feel on this one:confused::confused::confused:

I'd presume its Aguero they'd be talking about. He'd be the man we need to partner The Mighty Mighty Fernando up front. If I could choose anyone, it be him
I couldn't agree more.What a player he will be.
