Myself and a few friends are going to Las Vegas in December. We are thinking of going to the Grand Canyon. Has anyone been before? Is it worth the money as it seems fairly expensive. Also, whats the best option for the trip, helicpoter, coach, plane etc. Any advice greatly appreciated.

My parents were there not me and it is apparently something to behold the sheer size of it is something that cannot be captured on film only in person.
Helicopter is the dearest but its quickest way to go down into the canyon otherwise you have to hike it down and up which takes the guts of a day to do and at that time of year with shorter days you may not be allowed to go down.
If you are genuinely interested in seeing it, Id stump up the cash and go, but I wouldn't pay a lot of money and go just for bragging rights to say you've been there.

Hi mate
Only back from LV a short while ago, it's mad but class ... you'll either love it or hate it, no where in between I'm afraid.
The chopper is the only way to go, even then it'll take you several hours return trip from Vegas including circa 45 mins in the chopper and cost you circa $300 per person sharing in the chopper. There are other options, primarily small bus tours which are a bit cheaper 9say $75 cheaper), but far slower etc so not really worth it.
Personally, I think it took far too long to get there and back, for what it was ... amazing as it is, it cost me an entire day and the next day, as we were completely wrecked after the trip. Mind you, the dosh was going to be spent either on the chopper or the table games, so guess all was not lost ;) :D

Yep,saw that myself. I did something similar in Blackpool tower. You go up the top of the tower and walk across a glass window looking down a couple of hundred feet.

Went to the Canyon twice from Vegas. First time drove down (about 4-5 hours I think), wasn't that bad, you drive over the Hoover Dam, and you can take in a bit of the old Route 66 too on the way, although there's nothing really to see along it. We stayed down at the canyon for 2 nights though, log cabin type things. Don't know about driving down and back in the same day....
Second time went with Maverick helicoptors, flight was about an hour and a half round trip, but the trip we did didn't land in the canyon, just flew around it for a bit. The choppers are wrap around glass and you can see loads, we flew up front (Pilot +3) going from Vegas to the Canyon, and in the back (4 of us) on the way back. We stopped to refuel on the way back from the Canyon and swapped places with those in the back to give them a better view. Think it cost about $750 for two of us and that included a DVD of the trip!
Well worth a visit whatever way you do it!

Was in Phoenix, Arizona on a work related trip about 8 years ago. Had a rental car and a day to spare. Drove to Grand Canyon and back in 1 day. I would definitely do it again. Terrain, towns, Route 66 and eventually the national park at Sth side of Grand Canyon is something you will never see the likes of elsewhere. It is one of the Natural Wonders of the World.

I just got back from two week trip to the US last week. Went to San Fran, LA, San Diego and Vegas. The highlight of the trip was the helicopter trip around the Grand Canyon. It consists of a pickup from hotel and 45 min bus trip to Boulder City Airport. Then a half hour flight out the Grand Canyon via Hoover Dam. Helicopter lands in the Canyon and you get pinic lunch (Champagne, Sandwiches, Crisps) and walk about for half hour or so. Then half hour flight back to airport. It was 315 dollars each but was well worth it.

Hi Scousedub
Was there 2 years ago for 10th wedding annivesary and had a ball.
Did the overnight helicopter trip to cowboy ranch, and flew over grand canyon hoover dam, and lake meade, and next day flown right up the strip by helicopter. Must say the cowboy ranch stay was excellent stuff, roasting marshmallows around camp fire, singing cowboys and choice of log cabins or Teepees to sleep in, the whole experience i'll never forget. Think we paid $365.00 each for it and booked online before we went, really you should try it, you'll never forget it.
No frontiers (RTE Holiday Show) did a show on it few years back.

As part of a West Coast road trip two years back (LA, Santa Cruz, San Fran, Yosemite, Vegas, Grand Canyon, San Diego and then Orange County for a week for a wedding) headed to the Canyon from Vegas by car. We did the Hoover Dam tour en-route so its well drivable. Went to see it at sunset and sunrise the next morning. If going back I'd deffo do the trek down into it to be honest but I'd be way more interested in the likes of that or Yosemite, Joshua Tree etc anyway. Sounds like if just spending a week or so in Vegas the helicopter trip is the way to go and Liverbird's sounds the pick of the bunch. The short trips like most things over there are probably cheaper to book over there like a half price show we got in and was exact same in Broadway.
By the way loved Vegas !
