I have a 42inch philips ambilight and want to connect the laptop to it. I bought the hdmi cable today and connected it up. First off the only thing that appeared on the screen was the picture of my desktop. so i disconnected and started again following this:

Enabling the Display Settings for a TV

    1. Click Start , click Control Panel, and then click Appearance and Personalization.

    2. Under Personalization, click Adjust Screen Resolution.

    The Display Properties window appears.

    3. Click Advanced.

    4. Click the tab for your video card.

NOTE: To determine the type of video card installed in your computer, see Windows Help and Support. To access Help and Support, click Start ® Help and Support. Under Pick a Task, click Use Tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems. Then, under My Computer Information, select Hardware.

    5. In the display devices section, select the appropriate option for using either a single display or multiple displays, ensuring that the display settings are correct for your selection.

Enabling the Audio Settings for a TV

    1. Click Start , click Control Panel, and then click Sound.

    2. Under Sound, click the Playback tab.

NOTE: The default playback device is indicated with a green check mark.

    3. If the HDMI device is not the default device, select it, click the Set Default button, and then click OK.

Everything went well until i got here:

    4. Click the tab for your video card.

Im presuming this is the vid card: NVIDIA GEFORCE 8400M GS
I clicked it and nothing. I put on youtube on laptop as a test and theres sound from the tv but no pic, all that happens is if i press play on youtube the screen will flash for a second and 1080p will come up and it fades gain(still with sound)

Anyone know what im doing wrong, sorry for the long post but its doing my head in.

Im running vista premium and know a tiny bit about computers:)

Have a play with the screen resolution. Your range might be too high.

Control Panel - display - settings tab.

There will be a section called screen resolution. It is typically set to 1024 x 768, if is higher than this then lower it and click apply.

Just remember what setting it was on before you make changes.
