TONY BARRETT: Boo boys are letting down Liverpool's reputation

ON several occasions in recent years, non-patriotic Liverpool fans have used various platforms to point out the differences between themselves and followers of the England national team.

One of the big contrasts, it is argued, is that England supporters are often guilty of booing their own players which is something Liverpool fans would never do.

Well there must have been quite a few of the England “faithful” present at Anfield on Tuesday night given the reception Lucas was given when introduced as a second half substitute.

It may only have been a smattering of boos from the overwhelming minority but it was loud enough to be heard at pitch side and to be picked up on by those on Liverpool’s bench and perhaps even on the pitch.

Whether Lucas heard it is not known but for a Liverpool player to be treated so badly by those who claim to “support” them is something which shames all involved.

The Brazilian may not have set the world alight since moving to Anfield and he may even have been partly responsible for the loss of a couple of vital points at Wigan and for Liverpool playing with only ten men in latter stages of their FA Cup defeat to Everton.

But he is a Liverpool player who is trying to make his way in a style of football which is still comparatively new to him and at just 22 years of age the very least he deserves is to be provided with the kind of environment in which he can progress – and against Sunderland he certainly didn’t get that.

If Rafa Ben*tez picks him that is because he thinks he is good enough and when it comes to team selection the buck has to stop with the manager, not the player.

Lucas is a popular figure at Melwood because he puts a shift in at every single training session and mixes well with all his team mates.

He is hard working, polite, totally inoffensive and always approachable for autograph hunters and fans. In short, he is a good professional who deserves to be treated as such.

In the last couple of decades Liverpool have had more than a handful of players who have let themselves and their club down because of their attitude, but it is hard to recall anyone else in a red shirt being booed by their own fans.

Not El Hadji Diouf, not Neil “win or lose, it’s on the booze” Ruddock, not even Sean Dundee.

Of course, anyone who pays good money to set foot inside Anfield has the right to support the team in whichever way they choose – or not – and players are rewarded handsomely enough to be able to cope with not being given unconditional backing.

But when so much success has been built on the union between supporters and team it is surely ridiculous for such unity to be placed in jeopardy by the unhelpful targeting of a single player.

In the warm afterglow of Istanbul, Johan Cruyff no less underlined the synergy between the supporters and their team by arguing that “there’s not one club in the world so united with the fans.”

The Dutch legend’s words were backed up by Diego Maradona who believed that Liverpool’s miraculous fifth European Cup win was partly due to the supporters who “showed their unconditional support at half-time when they were losing 3-0 and still didn’t stop singing.”

It is on the back of such stories and tributes that the reputation of Liverpool’s fans as the 12th man has been built.

On Tuesday night that image was dented. Lucas was in need of support but did not get it.

Those who booed him may think they were doing their bit for the club.

In actual fact those people were just persecuting a young player and dragging the reputation of some of Liverpool’s fans down to the level of those England followers so many of them claim to be so different to.

Another good article by barratt. Thanks for posting.Disgusting the way he was booed. If only there was a way to make tickets easier to get for the genuine fans and harder to get for the rest maybe it would put these idiots off going the game. But sadly when the world is full of travel agents and touts and when any old fool,(even a manc!) can send in a postal or ring the phones with not so much as a fancard-tickets are easy to come by for those with more money than sense.

Throughout all my time supporting Liverpool, the mancs have been the dominant force in england-winning trophies left, right and centre, but at the back of my mind i always told myself that at least we had the best fans in the land and the most league titles. This season it looks like we might just have lost both those mantles.:(:(:(

I think it's one of the lowest points of this season so far...

It's absolutely disgraceful that this is happening, it's not the first time this season either. I would love to see those doing it being f**ked out and never be allowed to enter Anfield again. Wasters is all they are.

I would not be the biggest admirer of Lucas as a player but there is no excuse whatsoever for any so called fan to boo one of our own players.

Not the way for Liverpool supporters to be behaving and those doing it should just f**k off to Old Trafford where they would fit in very nicely.

Because you always hear United players being boo'd by their own fans? Strange, cause I never hear it.

Has that touched a nerve with you?. Why do you care?
You also seem to be slightly sensitive re the ladyboy in a thread the other day too. Interesting.

How is it touching a nerve. It seemed an odd thing to say, so I asked why you said it? Are you saying it touched a nerve because its an easy way to hide the fact that you said something silly?

I was just genuinely wondering why you said it, like you could have picked Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, a whole host of teams. Its was a simple question, but if you want to make something more of it, then your more than welcome.

Yeah, my nerves were totally touched on Ronaldo too. It wasn't a case of people over-reacting to what I said.

And its interesting how? So instead of just answering my simple question, your going to dodge it by implying I'm a United fan? Thats very clever of you. I'm a United fan who likes to spend his time on a Liverpool forum posting long winded posts defending Rafa, Lucas, Babel etc. That sounds like a standard blueprint for a United fan, doesn't it?

EDIT: The reason I was actually asking about why you said what you said was, I can't stand this overall bitter attitude Liverpool fans are developing about United. Its almost turning into a situation that we are to United what Everton are to us. Its cringe worthy to read and it looks terrible for an out-sider looking in.

No mister I've nothing to hide at all. Not going to get into an argument with you as I feel you have another agenda on here to be quite honest with you so not bothered in wasting my time on you.

You question MSG's post, right after you posted this in reply to one of MSG's posts...

I am not developing any bitter feelings towards Utd. I was born to hate them Cu*ts.

PS sorry if the word "cu*ts" is an offensive description for the pin up Ronaldo or the player of the year Giggs, it just happens to be the word I feel best describes them.

Thats because your a shit stirrer mate, giggs was booed into oblivion a few years back was "finished" and "not fit to wear the jersey anymore" yet now like lazarus hes the greatest thing since slice bread.Take your head outta the sand and stop trying to WUM,its boring everyone else.

Ryan Giggs quoted saying in 2003

“Getting criticism is part of being a Manchester United player. It doesn’t bother me. I don’t know why I’m singled out. Maybe it’s because I’ve been around so long. But the one person I have to impress is the manager - and while he is picking me, I know I am good enough.”

Thats so true, and it does my head in the way things like this are just so conveniently forgotten.
But currently there aint a whole lot of booing going on at old trafford, simply because they are doing so well.
I totally disagree with booing any player of the team you follow because ultimately it will show you up as being fickle (eg the united fans above).
Lest we forget Danny Murphy being boo'd off the pitch at home to Southampton in 2002, only to go out and score the winner in the next match at Old Trafford and turn "hero", mad an idiot out of a lot of Liverpool "fans" that day, and I hope to God that Lucas cando the same some day soon.

Ive read a lot of post match posts, not just the Sunderland game, where Irish reds are being slated for booing Lucas and generally being tits. Of course there is going to be idiots going to games but I think its a little easy to pass the blame onto Irish reds so Im interested to hear diffrent from anybody who was there.
