ok so in times of recession i'm looking at ways i could save some money.1 option is to change my broadband provider.

i'm currently with digiweb and tbh i'm pretty happy with the service they provide so i'm a bit weary of changing.so i'm looking for advice/suggestions.

at present i pay 39.99 a month for 6mb and i think it's a 30gb d/l limit which is good, but the price appears to be a bit steep compared to some of the other packages on offer at the moment.

just noticed meteor are offering 5mb for 16.99 with 5gb so this is a nice saving if your prepared to accept the 5gb d/l limit.29.99 for the stick.

3g also have an offer of 19.99 for 15gb d/l limit tied to an 18 month contract with free modem.

so just wondering if anybody uses these providers and what are they like what the coverage is like etc.i'm in finglas and was told that the meteor coverage is good.

From what I know the meteor broadband is only available in Dublin and Cork City for the moment (so should be OK) but will be rolled out to the rest of the country in time. It obviously depends on what you require in a package, ie, does it have to be mobile? Should have a look at the link below, it gives a fair assessment of most of the providers on the market.

No bother mate. If you are picking a fixed line option just one thing to look out for is the contention ratio which they quote. I think the likes of eircom are about 28:1 which means you could be sharing your speed with anything up to 28 users around you. Not too much to worry about for light users but could drive you mad if you download a lot or use it for gaming.

Smart telecom offer a 24mb line with a contention ratio of 1:1. We in the biz call that SWEET!

But if its shopping around you want to do check out http://www.callcosts.ie. It compares all broadband packages available in Ireland.

    yeah thinking the same

have 7mb eircom and slow as shit , i rang them and asked why ? and was told that between 6-10 were busy hours etc , so i said well why advertise 7mb if u cant provide the service ??

plus i pay €65 a month including line rental when i dont have a phone at home , so to me its a dead charge

but as slow as they are etc there connection never breaks unlike some

Smart Telecom ‘Best Performing ISP in Ireland’

    http://www.iia.ie/news/item/1076/smart-telecom-welcomes-award-as-best-performing-isp-in-ireland/
They don't have the best customer Services Dept. but they must be doing something right.

"05 December 2008 – Smart Telecom, the next generation broadband provider, today welcomes the new Epitiro report that ranks Smart as the ’Best performing Internet Service Provider in Ireland’ but warns that a new concerted broadband push is now required and ComReg must act in the best interest of consumers and drive infrastructure based competition, in particular in LLU.

It is no accident that the top two performing providers in the Epitiro report are the two largest providers of Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) in Ireland, yet LLU only accounts for a few percent of all broadband connections. This flies in the face of international best practice that has seen LLU become a major success in top performing countries such as France and the UK. This inactivity comes despite repeated warnings from alternative operators, such as Smart Telecom that Ireland was suffering as a result. The findings of the Epitiro report reinforce this argument.

Commenting on the report, John Quinn, Regulatory Director at Smart stated: “We are naturally delighted at being independently rated as Ireland’s best service provider but even we want to push out the boundaries and do better, much better. It is not technology or, for once, the current economic climate that is stopping us growing LLU but the repeated delay’s in getting the correct regulatory framework in place, after 8 years of work on this very item, it must be urgently accelerated and finalisedâ€

“There is no reason why LLU cannot be available in most towns and cities in Ireland giving consumers choice, value for money, innovation and best of all a high level of competition. LLU also forms the backbone of what is needed for Next Generation Networks and without it Ireland’s global competitiveness is going to rapidly diminish. It is incredible that in the current economic climate, a section of the industry that can create jobs, invest in infrastructure and drive innovation is being allowed to fail.â€
Concluding, Quinn stated, “We also hope future reports will provide even more useful information and include new measurements and providers."

    Ends"
