just abut hanging in there, for how much longer i dont know i work for myself, have a truck and mini bus on the road.

The contracts for the truck which i drive is hanging by a thread but the bus which the wife drives is as safe as houses.

If the truck goes bang the wife has a job in a deli which she can take up when she wants and ill jump into the bus so hopefully ill ride out this recession by the skin of my teeth,it wont be pleasant though

Laid off in july 2007 after 8 years in a factory. Was out of work 3 months and then got a job in another factory through an agency. Let go by them last april and was waiting 2 months for another job and have been in there since thank god. The dole queue is the most humiliating and depressing thing about been out of work.

As soon as you finish go down to the dole office and sign on for jobseekers allowance. You should be as entitled to it as far as I know. It's a means tested payment so it's based on other income/assets you have. If you have nowt and you are full time 'jobseeking' you should qualify. Although with the up to three month waiting list you'd also want to go to your local health centre to apply for Supplementary Welfare Allowance (basically a bridging payment) http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/social-welfare/social-welfare-payments/supplementary-welfare-schemes/supplementary_welfare_allow

Summer of relaxing may not be an option mate, they are clamping down. Your parents means aren't assessed as such but you may be deducted something for living at home

Thankfully my job is almost 100% secure. In my line of work, we're actually even busier with the recession. Was lucky to make the move from working in property about a year and a half ago just before things got bad. Nearly all of my ex work colleagues made redundant though, my heart goes out to people who are left in the shit with mortgages and kids n everything. Really hope things pick up sooner rather than later, it's depressing the state this country is in:(

Bout 130 employees where I work. 36 will be made redundant tommorrow. I reckon I'm safe but not my mates. Theres gonna be an awful atmosphere with everyone waiting for the call to the office and then everyone else looking on as they make that final walk.

Its actually sad how this country was booming and everyone making money and it seems almost overnight its completely turned around.

a lot of the bigger companies are using the situation to change working conditions, manning levels, pensions and so on. They know that people can't complain, there's a lot of ''well, if you don't like it find work somewhere else''

They know they have the upper hand.

Well first of all they cannot make you take a pay cut - you have to agree to it. But it may be a case of either take a pay cut or else they will have to start letting people go. I don't know your circumstances but if it was me, I would take the cut if it was necessary - I wouldn't be happy about it but better to take a pay reduction rather than having no job at all.

Employed presently in the construction industry dont know what the future holds for myself but I know for a fact I am not one to take the employers crap of lucky to have a job yarn. I have worked hard before during and even more so after the boom and why should I or anyone else be tossed aside at the first sign of trouble. Its mostly an excuse to get rid of staff to make up for lost profits. Lots of these companies have made millions while the ordinary joes who made them the money get the average industrial wage and the bullet when it all ends! No disrespect to anyone on here but I know a lot of people tossed aside and its bugging the shit out of me that I should be grateful because I have a job. I and all others have worked hard to be treated this way

In the last 14 months I've spent 8 months in Saudi Arabia then 6 months in Wales. Unfortunately the company I work lost a large portion of their contract on the Welsh job so they had to make major cutbacks. They put me on temporary lay off in December. They told me last month that I'll be going back to Saudi. Just waiting for the position to open up on the project over there. There is absolutely nothing in Ireland. 1st time in 7 years I've been out of work. Thank God we are at the bottom of a very deep hole. Only way is up from here.

My firm has let a significant amount of people go in the last 6 months. At the moment Im good value as Im on a training contract and get paid next to nothing.

Come September it may be a case of staying on for a ridiculously low wage or entering a new field.

got two weeks notice last friday, total shock, qualified accountant by trade.

You'd think accountants would be fairly safe

me too ,management want us to take a pay cut ,we said no because they said they will also be making redundancies , they just needed something to use as an excuse ,boss off playing golf and HR wont come in to talk to us ,so we had a work stoppage for 20 minutes and said we want some answer ,

Lost my job in Zavvi in feb. On the jobseekers at the moment. I signed last wednesday at the local dole office & the Q went out the door, through the carpark & out the side gate.

A new poll prob needs to be put up. Some people who said "yes" may be "no" now.

I defo reckon a lot of places are using the recession as an excuse to cut staff, there is profitable companies out there laying off people hand over fist and then workin the bollix out of the remaining staff knowing staff will do it as there is so much fear now out there that people are afraid to speak up for themselves because they are afraid of the bullet.

A lad who plays 5 a side with us on mon nights was telling me that his gaffer used to pay him a full day to work 5 hours on sat morning driving a bin lorry and last week he only paid him for 5 hours and when he questioned his boss he was told if he didnt like it theres the gate he can get truck drivers at an hours notice

Thats a poxy attitude to have this lad is driving for him for ten years. He is still collecting the same number of bins as he was 2 years ago so i guess his gaffer is still getting the same waste charges he was 2 years ago

Fcuckin disgusting

Youve read it wrong mate,69.3% ARE employed but 30% not which is still a huge and worrying amount.

Agree with ya there mate, Just too easy at the moment for the bosses to say we have to make cutbacks with this economic climate and sod the people who helped them rake it in through the good years.
