Right, time for people to put the mess of Boro to the back of their minds and lets just focus on whats in front of us. Nothing can be done about whats gone, so lets all be united (for lack of a better phrase!:p) and use the power of positive thinking to go into this match with the right frame of mind.
Having said that, if Nando is still missing, and possibly Gerrard too, I can see this one being another case of a team coming to park the bus in front of The Kop and challenge us to break them down. Sunderland held Arsenal to a 0-0 a couple of weeks ago, and they got to the 89th minute at Old Trafford.
I think the line up should be something like this; (assuming that Nando and Stevie will be missing)
---------------------------Pepe-----------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------
----Arbeloa--------Carragher-----Skrtel-----Aurélio-----------
-------------------------Mascherano-------------------------
---Benayoun---------------Alonso---------------Reira--------
----------------------------------Babel----------------------
------------------------Kuyt---------------------------------
I know people aren't to high on Babel right now, but I'm still prepared to give me more time. At least, at the very least, until the end of the season.
I would just like to see something along the lines of this line up, instead of the defensive approach we take at home. A bit more attack minded, maybe adopt a gung-ho "nothing to lose" type attitude, and start creating chances right from the get go. A nice fast pace to the game is required. When we play at home, we seem to play a slow passing game, and then go 1-0 down before picking up the tempo. When we pick up the tempo, other teams seem like they just cant deal with us. So I say, start this way, get a go, and then slow the game down. Not the other way around.
Come on lads. Its not over til its over. I've watched enough Rocky films to know that much!

Anyone see any update on Gerrards injury/fitness?
Was it not just cramps?
Alex Raisbeck

Not sure, I switched off straight after the final whistle and havent took much notice of any football since so was just wondering.
If that was the case then good.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't just cramp. He came out the worse off in a 50/50 challenge. It may well have been just an impact injury that was fine a hour or two later, or this morning when he woke up. But it certainly didn't look like cramp to me. It would be pretty coincidental that he pulled up after the challenge, moved pretty gingerly for a minute or two, and then came off.
I'm hope I'm wrong, but I certainly didn't think it was cramp.

Its JohnnyChimpo. Its Kenwyne Jones, its Ryan Babel, and its Rafa Benitez. And I really hope your joking about wanting Kenwyne Jones to be a target for us for the summer. Why not bring back Cisse too? He constantly outshines Jones, maybe we should get him too?
We're Liverpool, we need to be aiming a little higher than the likes of Peter Crouch, Craig Bellamy and Kenwyne frickin' Jones.

The formation v Pompey looked good in parts when we were missing Gerrard and Torres.
I'd go with something along the lines of...
Reina
Skrtel...Carra...Agger
Arbeloa...Aurelio...Alonso...Mascherano...Dossenna
Babel...Kuyt
If both our 2 superstars are out, then I think we'd get the best from whats left from this formation.
In the Fulham game, we lined up really well, and everyone knew their role.
Forget about the result for a minute and try to cast your memories back to the actual game and how we played. We dominated them for the first half and were unlucky not to get our noses in front, but we really got the best out of Dossenna, possibly his best game in a Red shirt, and Aurleio never lost his touch in midfield from his Valencia days.
Alonso in midfiled would have plenty of runners to choose from in attack, and Masch would supply protection in front of the 3 CB's.
Defensively, the 3-5-2 quickly turns into a 5-3-2, offering defensive solidity when on the back foot.
Playing 2 up top is the bare minimum we should be playing when at home, anything less is just unambitious..
I would like to see Raga go with this set up in the event that SG and Nando are unavailable.

I dont think my formation would be classed as unambitious. I effectively did have 2 up top, Babel was just off Kuyt, but thats cause I think it he would be more effective playing just off the striker, rather than an on the shoulder of the last defender type forward. He has great explosive pace, but he isn't someone who looks like he can lead the line, which is why I would have him just off the striker.
arbeloa is out
gerrard is in.

I could really do without another bloody match, our season has lead me to despise the weekends! I am out of what ifs and what fors and feel we need to face up to what the season will deliver. We just don't have the team to put in performances week in and week out! We get it right once every 4 weeks and this might be it? I fear not! Sunderland really will fancy their chances and rightly so.
We lack a real edge going forward, any drive in midfield and creativity coupled with that killer touch. Rafa's constant tinkering with the team and lack of a plan B have left us predictable and easy to stem. We will have the usual suspects starting in Carra, Skertel, Aurelio, Mascherano, Alonso and Kuyt, no match winners there. Chose any of El Zahr, Ngog, Benayoun, Riera, Babel, Arbeloa, Hyypia and we have a team seriously lacking.
I just need to look at the Utd front five compared with ours and we are woefully short. Too often Riera, Babel, Kuyt and Benayoun go missing and it's always let to Torres and Gerrard to dig us out. We have used up all those wins early season and await for another to step forward. We simply don't score enough goals and the Riera, Kuyt, Benayoun, Babel goal return is woeful. That's about £40m of cash wasted in attacking options!
What we have in reserve is simply not good enough and we ship out Pennant and Voronin. We really could do with them at the moment. Sunderland are another solid unit who have a goal threat in Jones and Cisse. They could knick this one 1-0. I really can't see a decent performance coming from us with Gerrard and Torres likely to be missing. Rafa wasted £20m in the summer and if only it had been spent wisely we could be so much better off! I despair!

Torres is definitely ruled out for tomorrow night. Stevie G was only suffering from cramp at the Boro game, but is still not a definite starter. And Arbeloa is going to be missing with his hamstring injury.

Stupid work messed me about so won't be at it afterall, Hope the atmosphere is cranked up for it though, times like this you need the 12th man on song!

We're playing Sunderland ffs.. a team we should be beating!!
But LFC and "teams we should be beating" dont seem to go hand in hand for the last couple of months.
We all could do with a pick me up after the weekend, and a few goals to boot!!
Here's to hoping!!
3-0 to the Reds!!

Whether stevie plays or not he wont be sharp after all the niggling injuries and between that and nandos absence we are very toothless.Sunderland will come and park the bus as they did to great effect for 91 minutes at old trafford and at the emirates also if memory serves correct.

Saw this in window of William Hill for 14/1
Terrible odds considering they will have 11 men behind the ball and were missing our key stricker
Ill take 1-0 but realistically for morale with big games coming up, we need to beat these convincingly (cant spell that word but get the message)

This has 0-0 all over it, Sunderland will come with 11 behind the ball, we will play in front of them for most of the night and dink in the odd aimless ball into the box for Kuyt to the head towards the corner flag.
I just cant see a performance coming without Torres. Added to that that probably Dossena will probably start with Lucus the deadly duo of muck. In all honesty Im so disillusioned with how easy Boro beat us and clueless we looked that it wouldnt suprise me in the slightest if we got caught out with a set piece.
Its either an early goal or nothing.

im with you,i think we'll win easily enough tonight,i expect a major response to last saturday,i watched sunderland against arsenal and they were more offensive than the papers gave them credit for,i dont think they'll throw 11 behind the ball for the whole game,3-1/3-0.

I'm nearly more worried that they will be offensive against us tonight, the mighty boro looked like the could have steam rolled us in the end and King really should have made it three nil. But getting Kuyt away from the lone striker role where he is completely ineffective and into right wing position where he can at least track back should counter a lot of this problem.

What would you have instead? Babel and El Zhar rightly changed after their performance on saturday. Arbeloa injured and Darby untested in the Premier League, now is not the time to bring him in. Both Carra and Skrtel have been poor at right back. Rafa's only other option as i see it would be to play one of the left backs at right back. Playing three at the back is a bigger disruption to the team than playing Masch at rb for a game, it's not a change of system at least.
As for Babel, I was hoping for big things from him this year, but his performances this season have been very poor, saturday was abysmal and he is the most chicken-sh*t player to challenge for a ball I've seen playing for liverpool in a long time...

I agree, It could be a 3-5-2 when you think about it. Also I'm pretty sure Masch has filled in at right back for Argentina a couple of times due to someone getting sent off in the Copa America. At least he is sending a a message to Babel that even when we're struggling for attacking players, he is still too shite to get a start.

At least he is sending a a message to Babel that even when we're struggling for attacking players, he is still too shite to get a start.
Yeah, and then still expect him to have some kind of confidence to change the game when we thow him on with 10 minutes left hoping for a miracle. Great forward thinking there.

Absolute crap!!! This team is just devoid of anything inventive. We are just too cautious. The distribution from the back is woeful, Carra plays far too many straight balls. The two full backs offer nothing going forward. The two wide players offer nothing attacking wise and tuck in too often. Ngog has little or no threat on goal and Kuyt just runs around. So Sunderland just sit in until we get desperate in the last 10 and they'll knick one. We are so predictable! If Ngog is the best striker we have at the club in the absense of Torres we are in big big trouble! Dire dire dire!!

Masch is a defensive midfielder was never really gonna destroy defenders all game, he is getting forward tho. Unlucky with two efforts.
Our squad is general is very very light def not good enough for a Liverpool squad. Crowd is dead but then it works both ways. The players have yto give somethin to be excited about and in the last few weeks theres been very little. They seem too nervous

That second half was 100% better. We looked dangerous going forward and pressed Sunderland. We moved the ball much quicker and got at them. Riera for the goal showed signs of what he's capable of but he only did it once. Babel came on and looked the deal. Benayoun was superb and he has been our consistent performwer of late. The back 4 were never troubled and we were spared the anxious last 10 at 0-0.
I think that is a solid team performance at home and we can be pleased. We have Madrid next up and if we show a similar performance we will be okay. The big one at Utd could be a real turning point for us and with Gerrard and Torres fit we can look forward with optimism. I'm happy tonight and that doesn't happen often. Well done boys a good professional job. I'll lay off Ngog as he bagged a goal.:D
Phil!
03-03-2009, 09:01 PM
Good win.
Was impressed by Ngog he looked lively and so did Benayoun he had a very very good game. When Ngog came off there was nobody making runs into the box and didnt look like scorin. Babel looked interested tonight which has been a change from recent weeks and if he had been given more time perhaps would have got a goal. Unfortunately Chelsea also won tonight so were still third but if we can carry on gettin victories the season is definately not over. We need a bit of consistencey and be able to string a few wins on the trot together and a win against United is vital!! If we lose that then thats it game over lights out. But i actually believe Rafa can take us to Old Trafford and get us a win so come on you redmen lets go and get that victory we need!!!!

Brilliant overall performance, dominated the 2nd half. Benayoun had a very good night and I thought Mascha played well at RB, didn't look out of place at all (could be the answer if Arbeloa leaves and Darby fails to impress).
Good 3 points and is a great result to take into next week with confidence. This is how we should be playing every week! Pity we seem to have hit form about 3/4 matches too late!
Cisse got a good reception from the Kop which was nice to see but booing Lucas when he came on was just out of order, no matter how shit he is ( and I think he put in a decent performance in the last few minutes BTW) you still don't boo your own players! Imagine what it would feel like to run out onto the pitch at Anfield, desperate to impress and your met by boos? I'm going to stop going on about that now because this could turn into a serious rant!
Anyway I'm happy tonight, 3 points all that matters!

Ok we had a bit of luck tonight probably for the 1st time in ages. Reina's save was very important early on in the half. If that had gone in.......
David N'Gog played well for his first Anfield start. I am glad that Rafa picked him ahead of Babbel. It appeared to be the poorest atmosphere at Anfield for some time. The fans booing Lucas was very poor.
We have to keep believing a win in our next premiership game and things might get interesting again.

I was going to tell him if he was not buying the ticket at face value and if he had a picture of the ticket he was buying to ring the ticket office and report the fan card number to them to try and get this fan card cancelled.
I have removed the details of my own fan card in the pic above.
Hope to meet a few more Irish Kopites over at this game.

BTW everyone, skiner31 has gone away for a few days, to think about the site rules.

Does this game have a familar look to it? All the possession and no goals. Very little penetration and everyone looking to Gerrard to do something. 0-0 at half time?
:D
Yossi's on fire at the moment-is fast emerging as our best performer since christmas-great save from pepe early on (albeit from a poor finish from jones). No doubt he wont get the praise he deserves in tomorrows papers but it was crucial-most keepers would have rushed out and gone to ground early which makes up the attackers mind on where to put it but pepe held his ground and waited and waited and basically spooked jones into bottling it-well in pepe lad.Could have been a very different game with them trying to hold onto a 1 goal lead.Thought everyone had a pretty decent game tonight with the possible exception of riera who looks astonishingly lost after a promising start.Im praying thats its just the tiredness catching up on him but he keeps cutting inside onto his right foot(something he doesnt have unfortunately).

i agree that both yossi and insua were excellent - but what odds both will be dropped for the madrid and utd games...how will insua get better unless he plays against the best. Insua is our best (and fittest) left back at the club, was terrrific last night, a real natural footballer with a good first touch and excellent vision. Yossi is no world beater but is in fine form so it would be daft to drop him, he looks a threat in the final 3rd wihich we've sorely lacked. all in all i was happy, esp with the 2nd half. and delighted fro ngog, he's no torres but then who is. at imes he looked lost and had the odd dodgy touch but was hubgry, enthusuiastic and got stuck in...great to see him get the ovation when he went off.
on a side note, i may not rate lucas same as most on here...but the booing of him before he even touched the ball was disgraceful

Cant see Banyoun starting at OT - if Torres is fit he'll surely go for Riera/Gerrard/Kuyt behind him.
Anyway good result, performance was what you come to expect at home at these type of teams. A lot of huff and puff but not so much quality.
Maybe just maybe Newcastle might sneak a draw tonight and then a smash and grab at OT and we might put the jitters in em. Feck it, who am I kidding?

The booing was way out of order. Not that many actually booed though, but because the atmosphere was so shite you could hear them quite clearly. What was actually louder was the angry response of other fans to the knobs booing.
The poor lad is terrified and no chance of improving his confidence at Anfield. I was watching him warming up last night, he didn't look up once at the crowd and never got within 15 yards of the kop. I know he is a pro, well paid etc, but he is a human being doing is work in horrendous circumstances and could do with our support.
The only hope for him is a last minute winner @ old trafford to silence the fickle cu*nts.

good performance but not a great performance. We still lack a cutting edge. Yossi was good yet again, hope he starts in Kuyts place in OT. Atleast he is somewhat creative.

We need lady luck to be on our side tonight. We had one decent half last night but we are really going to need to up our game for scum saturday week. We have more time off before then, so lets hope benitez utilises time well and picks out their weaknesses
Big 3 games coming up - 2 wins and draw be enough as long as Real is the draw ;)

Just back in from the game, thought we were a bit cagey in the first half to be honest but that was to be expected after our recent run of games. Ngog impressed me very very much his movement, strenght, heading was great, tried one or two dummies that didn't come off but were clever, showed that maybe he could be a player for us.
Yossi was immense last night, he links up with Kuyt brilliantly and he matched Kuyts work rate last night the man worked his socks off. Carra was as reliable as ever. Mascher had a stormer at right back, passing was a bit better and his crossing was average, which lets be honest in an improvement on oul Arby's deliveries. Srktel brought the ball into midfield a lot from short kick outs which was good to see as we were in total control of possesion. Emmy bombing down the left was class, the lad was basically out on the left on his own.
Man I am really fed up with Rieira and Babel. Both offering nothing to the team at the minute, we have no 'out' ball to the left wing at all, I was amazed to see how often Rieira folllows Gerrard inside (I thought Smicer was gone). Babel came on and done the usual take the ball down the outside, cut back in to give a pass back to the opposite keeper. I would nearly play Fabio left mid and Insua left full (or vice versa) as i feel it would offer more balance and end product.
Shame to hear Lucas being booed, could you hear it on the telly??? the lad came on with ten minutes to go gave one bad pass i mean how is he getting booed and Rieira isn't last night, a joke!!! If it wasn't for Phil Neville's hand, Lucas wouldn't have this treatment.
Great ovation for Cisse, he done his bit for us when he came on, pity Bellamy couldn't have followed suit!!!!
IN RAFA WE TRUST!!!

Just back from the game. Shocking first half, absolutely awful so i wont even get into it.
Second half was a 100% improvement, Yossi was class again, Insua looks like he is going to be the real deal. Masch looked brilliant at right back, he got forward more last night than he has ever done for us :D. I felt N'Gog played well, made some great runs in the first half and was unlucky that the passes didnt match his intelligence. Gerrard was absolutely shocking, no excuse for a performance like that.
Atmosphere was terrible aswell, i was in the anny road lower which i was expecting to be quiet but not as bad as it was. The booing of Lucas was a disgrace, how can you expect him to come out of a slump when he is getting booed like that, a few serious arguments broke out around me about it. Didnt do anything wrong when he came on except one over-hit pass in injury time.
Oh and did anyone else see Babel wearing the armband when he came on? Stevie gave it to him when he was going off, Babel was going to bring it back down to Carra who basically told him "Get up front, forget about the armband"

Great to see the team back playing well again, not too sure what clicked with them last night but there just seemed to be a pretty good balance in the team thats been missing in a lot of games. Didn't have that feeling that i've been getting recently that we were never going to score.
Great to see Ngog getting a goal and i thought he was pretty good all round other than that. Insua and Benni were both fantastic last night and i have to say that you could have easily persuaded me last night that Masch was our starting full back, Arby really doesnt' have anything on him, though Masch did amazingly manage to foul someone in the last few minutes over in the left back position, put it down to a moment of madness. I even thought that Babel looked dangerous when he came on and managed to actually get past the full back for the first time in a while.
Gerrard and Alonso did what the needed to in the middle and kept the ball moving without either of them actually playing that well. It makes Alonso far more cautious not having the monster covering behind him.
Unfortunately despite all of the above its just far too little, far too late. Even had they turned it on at the weekend against the Boro i would have felt we were still in the hunt but 10 points is far too many.
Good win last night and well done Rafa on the team put out.
Nice to see different players stepping up to the plate,Benayoun,Insua and Ngog were our 3 match winners.
Treatment of Lucas by a no doubt very small section of the crowd was an absolute disgrace when you see some of the stinkers other players (fans favs) have been in this season. Better to be rated by the fans than Rafa it seems

Don't think he's even Hungarys number 1 anymore and Gordon won't be Scotlands number 1 for much longer either :D.
On a seprate not i was impressed with the way Sunderland tried the pass the ball and move last night. They look much better than they did under a previous manager whose name escapes me ;)

Andy Reid is bursting with talent, pity it's not the only thing he's bursting with though, could be an asset for Ireland, he can sure pass a ball. Jones looked alright but missed a sitter i don't understand the hype.

Whilst the 2-0 win over Sunderland is a welcome 3 pts, it still doesnt remedy some of the problems that we have. I didnt see the match so can only go by what I read elsewhere. Some positives, but the negatives remain.
Masch did a good job for a midfielder at right back it seems. But it goes to show that Rafa perhaps offloaded Finnan a bit too soon. Whilst Arbeloa has developed into something that is acceptable, we dont have cover, or we did a bit with Carra.
Good to see Insua back. I have hopes for him and he didnt put a foot wrong last time I saw him play. What I dont understand was as soon as he got into the Liverpool team he went off with Argentina U-20's. And has only come back now. Instead he should have remained and would now be an ever-present, apart from forays by Aurelio. Aurelio is okay, and is good at frees. Could he do a job at left mid? In some games, perhaps yes. So we have two recent buys at Babel and Riera as back-up/surplus? Hmmm.
Skrtel was shaky at the start and they could have easily got a goal with that chance. 0-1 down, this game may have been completely different. But such is football.
N'Gog did okay I suspect but he is no lethal goal finisher, thats for sure. Benni and Kuyt plenty of effort as usual, not always product. And Stevie is Stevie, as is Alonso and Carra.
Are we back in the chase? I dont know. Three big games coming up. 3 wins would be nice, but not likely. Fingers crossed.

While, like most Pool fans I was a big fan of Finnan, I can't see how it would have helped this season to be paying his wages on the treatment table.

How are both Riera and Babel back up / surplus if Aurelio can sometime do a job at LM. Maybe I'm misreading what your trying to say.
With regards to the Jones chance, I would put the blame for that mainly at Carras door. Got caugh wrong side.

You need minimum two players for each position in the team, regardless of whether they could also fill in at a different position.

Booing of Lucas a fu'cking disgrace, how do these cu'nts get hold of tickets?
That was the saddest thing about last night, not even that the atmosphere was flat but the idiots that boo'd Lucas as he came on. As Ronan said there its a pity that morons like that manage to get tickets at all.
Read a well written article about the booing (and more besides that) earlier:
(taken from liverpool banter)
Enough is enough. The reaction of Liverpool fans when Lucas was introduced in last nights game was an utter embarrassment.
We've all reached the point where we realise Lucas is never in a million years going to perform to the ability of players who have gone before him, or even those who are around him, but surly the booing of a 21 year old player before he's actually kicked a ball, proves just how far the pendulum has swung.
Liverpool fans have installed this mentality where they have a defined right to success, and on which basis? Because we dominated the 70's and ruled the 80's?
Well a wake up call is required, we have a manager at the helm who has played a significant part in the clubs modern history, yet people are still baying for blood and spreading vicious rumours, when in reality they should have been soaking up the sun in the Spanish capital.
It's a case of when is this circus going to end. From owners who won't back Benitez, to Chief Executives who won't speak to owners, to supporters who believe they know better than everyone else. In some cases they probably do, but take a look at the Liverpool hierarchy, and to be honest, it's not exactly hard to.
Last night was the lowest reaction I've ever seen to a substitute, those who did jeer must have simply not been around in the 90's when the red shirt meant nothing more than beer tokens for 'professionals' who deemed it more appropriate to clinch the next modelling contract opposed to three points.
Every club has a scapegoat, and every era has one too, some of them deserve the title, and others don't. But the point is now the boo boys are not even waiting for a mistake before getting on the players/managers back.
It's a new generation of support, those who pay strictly to be entertained, and it's only going to get worse.
The pretty picture of the Kop swaying with scarves held aloft as they suck the ball in is one of yesteryear, now we see a crowd which consists of drab groans and boo's despite the fact just a week ago we witnessed yet another amazing European night.
The consensus is Liverpool supporters crave the Premiership title and it looks despite being in such a strong position as the new year entered the dream is now likely to fizzle out with all hopes being pinned to the incredibly difficult Champions League, however, one things for sure, if your pinning your hopes on European success the one man you want leading you into battle is Rafael Benitez.

I was shocked by the booing too but to say he didnt get near the kop isnt true he came down and was clapped and he clapped back. I'm his harshest critic on boards but for God's sake it's a disgrace to boo him when he's coming on the f*** pitch.
I'd say it was the f*** digital camera merchants taking photos in the kop when had a corner at 0-0!!
I was right in the corner of the kop 5th row beside the flag pole and he was clapped when warming up,
i cant belive the fcuking arseholes booing, people that boo the team dont deserve to be there, that really does a players confidience in, once the manager puts a player on that pitch its up to us to support him, im sure the other players on the pitch last night felt the total lack of respect. it was a disgrace

At the start of the season,i wonder what odds you would have got on N'Gog scoring more Kop goals than Robbie Keane!
i always like to see a player keep his place after he scores so he can build some confidence and momentum-unfortunately with N'Gog we cant afford to risk him with madrid and the scum on the horizon.Hopefully he can get another few goals and games under his belt before the seasons out.
