I'm hoping that somebody on here knows a lot more about wireless internet then me because my head is on the verge of melting from talking to people in shops that don't seem to be able to help me.

We have eircom broadband at home but its not wireless and i've been looking to get wireless into the house but i've been warned that the eircom wireless is pretty useless. Is there anyway that i can keep the normal broadband (connecting the pc by wire) and have a seperate wireless unit (preferably other than the generic eircom unit).

Not even sure if this makes sense but any help/advice that anyone has would be much appreciatied.

The easiest thing for you to do is to buy a wireless access point. All you will have to do is connect one of the ethernet ports on the back of your existing router to the access point and this will transmit a wireless signal for you.

You will keep the wire connected to your pc and have a wireless signal available for connection.

I have wireless broadband from Eircom and it's excellent. Never have a problem with it. I've also never heard of anyone having much bother either with their own.

    Hi Mate
First off, although Im not a eircom fan, by any means, if your local PC router is performing very well on eircom then you will not have an issue with eircom wireless.

What LFCHitman said is spot on. If you end up buying a wireless router, it doesnt have to be from eircom but the netopia they sell is user friendly, you can get rid of the current router you have (or keep it for 'just in case' purposes).

The wireless router will have 4 LAN ports in the back of it, just like the router you currently have (PM if you dont or are not sure what Im on about) and you can plug your PC directly into the wireless router thus taking away the requirment and visual mess of two routers bunny hopping off eachother.

If your not sure about any of it, drop me a PM and I'll give you a call.

You must also make sure it sends a strong enough signal, (mine is perfect for my house), as houses with extra thick wall, the signal may not get through, altough it could be placed in the attic and come down trough the roof.(Hassle)

so as x43r0 recommended, i would personaly pay that bit extra to make sure that it works.

Just ring up Eircom and they should send you out a "new" broadband router/gateway for free (which is combination of wireless + normal wired/ethernet, i.e. you can use whichever connection you want).
