At least this is something to look forward to.

IRISH fans will have a little bit of "samba" to look forward to when their Euro 2008 Qualifying campaign comes to an end after the FAI wrapped up a February friendly with Brazil.

The Boys in Green will take on the world soccer giants at Croke Park on February 6 2008 after FAI Chief Executive John Delaney presented the proposal to the GAA last week.

Brazil visited Lansdowne Road in February 2004 for a high-profile friendly and the GAA, FAI and Irish fans alike will be hoping they will showcase a strong squad.
The FAI are reported to have paid in and around €500,000 for a date with the Brazilians, on top of the €1 million rental fee for Croke Park but will be expecting a €4 million payback from gate reciepts on top of TV rights payments.

If I remember correctly the last one was a decent game...?I wounder how much the FAI will pump up the ticket prices for this one.

What they will do is put the Brazil game as part of a two or three game friendly package. The other two games will be against The Faroe Islands and Azerbaijan or similar countries and make us pay up front for the three games.

It should be a good game. Great atmosphere. Though they will probably lump it in as a block booking package at €50 a ticket for each game.

I presume it'll stay the same as it currently is price wise, €50 for upper stands and €70 for lower. At least it'll be some quality opposition and not another mundane friendly on a chilly February night.

Thats what they did last time, Fran Rooney came up with the brainwave as I recall .... have to say, I and a few friends went to all three, stood for all three games but had great fun. Was it Denmark and Argentina or something, the other two games were ?

Let's hope we have a bright new year with a new manager and a fresh start...otherwise, we'll be seeing another Holland on our hands, and we all remember that match...

Its all good and well having a bright new year but its unlikely to have an effect come this time next year when the real games count. Brazil will send over a decent team cos the contract signed for this match demands as such, but in reality the result will mean little as the Brazilians will be happy to do enough to earn a draw, and to do that they'll have to do very little. We might well get the draw, but like the last time it will only lead to disappointment in the long term if we fail to qualify for another tournament.

Ya but when it comes to Croker we need much more experience playing there - friendlies included. When we played Wales there last March they had as much experience of the place as we had, and our two wins against them and Slovakia were far from convincing. Plus, if you don't want to attend any of them, I'm sure you'd find plenty takers for tickets on this site.

it sure was, we drew with brazil 0-0, beat the czechs 2-1 and romania - didnt care about that one. Also it was 60 euro for the three matches which was cheap

I'd forgotten about that. €60 for the 3 games, standing along the touchlines and a better atmosphere to go with it. €60 now wouldn't get you into the Lower Hogan or Cusack for this one game, I know inflation exists but thats really taking the mick!

Croke park in feb....You better hope its not raining because you and about 20,000 other fans would get soaked if you were sitting in the lower hogan or lower cusack stands. IMO this "world class stadium" is an absolute joke that it doesnt have a decent roof. How fundamental is the f***ing roof for gods sake in a country with Irelands weather. Luckily my qualifier tickets are up the back of the davin stand or else I would never set foot in it again after i got soaked at a GAA match this year.

To be fair, when it was built it was only meant to be hosting GAA games in the summer, mainly the end of May up to the middle of September - not exactly hurricane season even by Irish weather standards.

Anyway, I wouldn't let a drop of rain bother me for this, if its bucketing down your going to be soaked by the time you get to the ground anyway, so might as well go along with it and watch the flowing samba football on show, and watch Brazil too :p

Yeah it was and combined with the glam factor it was a good night out. I went to all 3 games too travelling up from Wexford to stand on the overpacked east terrace. I remember Baros getting booed for the Czechs for being a Red and getting a big cheer from the crowd (silent majority) for having the class to just clap it, he had scored. That combined with culchie bashing of our own players put me off Irish games to be honest. I was at Dutch debacle the highlight of which was the guy in front of us running onto the pitch to slap a Dutch guy on the arse, he total astonished reaction was priceless.

Seated with mates now so a more enjoyable session but fecking well pricey. We always had a keen eye out for pending or potential Reds on the opposing side like Gonzalez, Kuyt, Baros etc. Next step is to get the Spanish over here to a gawk at Xabi and Fernando on home turf (and Pepe and Luis of course).
