The chap just would not stay on his feet, I read that the coaching staff have been working hard with him to make him stay on his feet when tackling and then he goes and gets himself sent off for stupid fouls. I think he has really come on this season but he needs a solid "kick up the arse" in training.
i was surprised that he lasted as long as he did, he was just being reckless and diving in at everything
No need to go for that ball it was gone out when he made his attempted tackle! It doesnt help when we continuosly are giving bloody pens away, villa, chelsea(altough never a pen) portsmouth and now last night!
He'd want to loose it quick, and concentrate on doing what he's good at. His wrecklesness could have cost us last nite!
I hope the good press he has got recently has not given him a big head (how can it be any bigger!) . But the general feeling is that over the last 7 or 8 months he has improved greatly, hope it continues and then we can forget about that liitle indiscretion .
im always worried when pennant is on a yellow because he is so hot-headed and always talking back to referees
Jermaine Pennant today thanked his teammates for grinding out a point in Porto after his second half dismissal. Pennant was red carded for the first time in his senior career after 58 minutes of last night's Champions League clash as the Reds began their group campaign with a creditable draw. Although insisting he didn't deserve to be sent off, Pennant acknowledges he must learn to show more discipline in European competition. "The referees are harsher in Europe and I was baffled by him all night," said Pennant. "I definitely have to learn from the fact there's a difference in how the referees approach the games in Europe. In Europe you just have to stay on your feet. "I didn't think it was the right decision to send me off. It wasn't a yellow card because it wasn't a serious foul, and I didn't touch the Porto player anyway. He made a meal of it, so it was way too harsh. The whistling from the crowd influences the referee and makes his decision easier, probably. "In the Premiership, it wouldn't have been any more than a goal kick to the other side, not even a free kick. "It was agony watching the game in the dressing room. I was just thinking 'come on lads, stick it out for me'. They deserve full credit for getting the draw with ten men, which obviously makes it a lot more difficult. "I'm sure the manager won't hold the sending off against me. I hope it won't go against my name. It's the first time in my senior career I've been sent off. I was once sent off in a friendly under-18 international, but that's the only other time, so my disciplinary record isn't bad."
Wouldn't be surprised to see Rafa dropping him from Saturdays match against his former club just to teach him a lesson!! "A match he would be very much lookin forward to playing in"
Don't think so Nip. Rafa will pick the team he thinks is best suited to beating Birmingham. He has specially designed shoes that adjust to the size of a players' arse for dishing out lessons.. & young Jermaine could do with a double helping for his daft behaviour last night. Real pity as he has been a much improved player in the second half of last season & the start of this.
Yeah thats right i was not having a go just stating that i never feel comfartable looking at him when he is on a yellow as some times his enthusiasm (not sure how to spell that) gets the better of him which is why i think he was taken off against villa while on a yellow ! i think he has been much improved of late !
I think Pennant has been excellent this year. One of the biggest surprises. I dont think too many people will rasie the gerrard on the right debate any more, cos for me, pennant is now a starter on our strongest team. Unfortunate last night, but hell learn. I think he has shown amazing character in the way he has had to deal with the boo boys and won then over with some scintillating runs down the right.
needs to learn fast, i think everyone on this site could see he was going to get sent off, he was going to ground all night and it was only a matter of time, thankfully the lads managed to get a hard fought draw
Bloody tosser. Why the hell did he go in for that tackle when he hadn't a hope of winning the ball? Don't know how he can claim it wasn't a yellow card either.
I don't think it was, and certainly wouldn't have been without it being in porto, the player making an absolute meal of it and it being a champs league game!
While it was no doubt a wreckless challenge, its not such a bad thing to see the fella battling for every ball. Been the most improved player for us this season and will no doubt bounce back, hopefully this Saturday. Btw, did ya see the way he pointed at the ball, picked it up, and showed it to the ref as if he got it! Sure JP, you got the ball and not the player...
