Benitez didn't fancy me - Keane Keane believes his face did not fit at Anfield Tottenham striker Robbie Keane has said there was nothing more he could do to make a success of his short-lived spell at Liverpool. The Republic of Ireland international returned to Spurs this week after a disappointing six-month spell on Merseyside under Rafael Benitez. "Sometimes the manager doesn't fancy you, its as simple as that," he said. "If I was a bad egg around the place I could understand that, but I worked every day in training." Keane signed for the Reds in July in a deal which could have risen to £20.3m, but failed to gel with Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres in the side's attack. Sometimes the manager doesn't fancy you, its as simple as that Robbie Kene on his time at Anfield He scored seven goals in 28 appearances but found himself spending increasing amounts of time on the Anfield sidelines, with French teenager David Ngog moving ahead of him in the Anfield pecking order. He returned to London in a £12m deadline-day transfer to reclaim the Tottenham captaincy, bolstering Spurs' attacking options which also include Jermain Defoe, Roman Pavlyuchenko and on-loan Fraizer Campbell. "I went to Liverpool and, for whatever reason, it didn't work out. It is just disappointing that there were some opportunities I didn't get," Keane added. Keane refuses to criticise Liverpool "The most disappointing thing was getting left out of the squad. I found that difficult to take because since I have been a professional, I've never been left out of a squad for that reason." By contrast, Keane played tribute to Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp, who has spent £42m during the transfer window in a bid to stave off the prospect of relegation. "I'm now at a fantastic club with a fantastic manager who respects his players and if you're doing well will tell you you're doing well," he said. Keane has an immediate opportunity to re-establish himself in the affections of the White Hart Lane faithful with the visit of local rivals Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday. I don't think this has been posted already? Speaks volumes on the Keane issue which I'm sure most are sick of reading! It seems to give a different account from that given by Rafa! I suppose we should have expected it.
Robbies an LFC fan, and to me, he seemed to hold back alot when I heard this earlier today. I dont think you'll hear how he really feels about the situation until/if a book comes out.
Surely he knows by now that if Rafa bought him Rafa would play him.Its a bad situation but Robbie was a pawn used in a power struggle simple as.We have seen the faith Rafa has put in some of HIS debatable purchases time and time again and imo it would have been the same with Robbie IF Rafa was the one that brought him to the club. I believe Robbie was a target but deffo not the primary one, his place at the club was always goin to be as understudy to Nando its a terrible shame it didnt work out.Maybe if some of them glaring sitters he'd missed went in the situation could be different we'll never know but its passed now we more important things to be focussing on.
While Rafa can take some blame in what happened with Keane, the annoying thing is that Robbie is (still) taking no responsibility. Of course this suits fleet street and the red tops so they can heap the blame on Rafa, and sympathise with the "treatment" Keane received. He has shown his true colors to be honest. If he was such a big Liverpool fan he wouldn't have been talking about giving a potential Premier League winners medal to his brother. His work ethic and demeanor said it all, and contrary to the beliefs of the blinded nationalistic few; he got many chances to prove himself. He's claimed that the manager mistreated him, and that he wasn't shown "respect". Respect for what exactly? For playing 66% of the clubs games up to the Newcastle fixture in December and doing nothing? Because he was dropped after (two of few) decent performances against Arsenal and Bolton, then got his chance against Preston and stank the place out? For a goalscoring record of 7 scored in 28 games (or 1 in 4)? He would have made it at Liverpool under another manager? Laughable. Rafa isn't a hugs and cuddles kind of manager. Nor does he pander to their (players) whims. If he didn't know what Rafa was like, how to deal with him, and wanted to "work every day" he should have spoken to the club captain, or those other players around him about what Rafa expects. I haven't lamented his loss, but had wished him luck moving on. Now - good riddance to him. It's a small man that blames those around him. It's a bigger man that can see his own faults.
Had been impressed by the way he kept his council, up until now that he is. Obviously he couldnt last. As said before the missed sitters and stinking demeanour on the pitch are where it went wrong for him. Fault lies at his own door.
it really gets me that this story is still being spouted.Yeah it didnt work out and Rafa has to take some blame but come on Robbie, you started 18games and played in 27 in total and looked no more than average at best. Its just a fact that some transfers dont work out and this is one.Keane is not a top4 type player and there is no shame in that. He will go down in Spurs history and best of luck to him with that.Wish him all the best for the future but please shut the fcuk up about Liverpool now.
Shut up Tallaght man You'll always be a big fish in a small pond. You had your chance and you blew it. it wasn't Rafa missing all those sitters
I think the only sad part about this situation is how much keane wanted this to work out and how hard he tried, plus the fact that he's a boyhood reds fan, made it seem too good to be true and it kind of turned out that way. Always like having a token Irish lad in the team, we've been missing that since Finnan was harshly traded in.
In fairness Diggler has missed as many if not more this season than Keane did but the difference is attitude. Keane is bar far a better player than Diggler will ever be but where Keane would lose a ball or a pass go astray he would get the hump, Diggler will be sprinting all over the shop to get it back, its the same reason if Berba was offered to Rafa I believe he'd laugh and walkaway. Unless you are prepared to work your bo!!ox off Rafa has no time for you no matter how good you are. You look at Keane before and after LFC and he is working harder for the Spuds that he ever did for us. I still dont believe we should have sold him when we did and leave us light up front but he was gone in the summer had he lasted.
I wouldn't think Diggler has missed any where near the amount of chances that Keane did to be honest. Agree 100% with everything else you say.
Dirk has 7 goals and 4 assists in the PL so far this season, not bad for a guy that's playing predominently on the right wing. Keane had to go in January as Spurs were desperate for a striker after Defoe got injured and if we'd waited till the summer we'd have had a much weaker bargaining position. It was for the best that he left in January as it stopped the media circus that surrounded the whole thing! (Funny there's no similar circus when Tevez doesn't play for Man U)
Yeah considering he (Tevez) has only scored 3 league goals all season. The media report as they wish They even have some Liverpool fans brainwashed into believing that they play some super off the planet football while we are boring as shite and that we're struggling for goals because Keane left. As Rafa might say "The facts show that Liverpool are the joint highest scorers in the league to date"
Slightly off point here but just want to finish with another example.. Essien plays right back for Chelsea and there's no real fuss made about it Hargreaves plays right back for United and again there's no real fuss made about it ... Mascherano plays right back for Liverpool once and first question after the game to Rafa is why did you play a defensive midfielder at right back. When Rafa refuses to go into it, it's reported that Rafa is cracking up again etc etc.. Complete and utter Bias rubbish! So to bring it back on point, Robbie Keane is on the bench for Liverpool and it's headlines on every paper and website. Tevez, Anderson or even Nani (who cost fractionally less then Keane) don't play and no journo bats an eyelid! Even for BBC to do this interview at this stage is completely pointless ...
http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...acing-tottenham-exit-after-party-1844767.html Robbie Keane could be off-loaded in the January transfer window after his involvement in organising a secret Christmas party. The Evening Standard reports that the Irish striker arranged the jaunt in Dublin despite manager Harry Redknapp making it clear that a party was not allowed. The team get together, which involved visiting two bars and a nightclub, was held three days before Tottenham's defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend. It's now thought that Keane could be punished for his involvement by being transfer listed by Redknapp. The 29-year-old has been in indifferent form this season and has fallen behind Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe in the pecking order at White Hart Lane. He had already been linked with a switch to Celtic and by angering his manager a move only looks more likely.
An email was sent around today with pictures of the lads in Coppers. Crouch and Woodgate looked out of their bins.
