Went to see Luke Kelly tribute on Saturday night in the Civic Theatre in Tallaght. It's done by a guy called Chris Cavanagh and I have to say he was very very good. Obviously no one could ever match the legend himself but this guy came very close and is probably the next best thing. Just checking his website and he is doing a few more gigs around the country for any Luke Kelly fans who hasn't seen him and would like to check it out: http://www.legendoflukekelly.com/index.php?pr=Home_Page As a matter of interest, did anyone ever see him before and what did you think?
Unbeliveable the way he sings that, he hardly takes a breath! No one can sing that song like he does.
Been listening to all th Luke songs on Youtube recently and I've never seen a man sing with such passion and emotion. Best folk singer ever. Wouldn't mind seeing this dude too though doubt if he can get anywhere near Luke Kellys level.
Im a big fan of luke kelly myself.. but ive never seen chris kavanagh playing. but after you saying how good he is mrsstevieg,he must be well worth going to. how long does his gig last?
Gig started at 8 and was over at around 10:45 so he played for a good 2 and a half hours counting a break in between. Tickets were only €15 each so it's not bad value for money!. Civic theatre also allow you to bring drinks to the auditorium so that made for a good atmosphere! I thought he was very good anyway, as I said, there is no one on this earth who has a voice quite as good as the legend himself but your man does a pretty good job imo. Go along if you get the chance, esp if it's only €15 a ticket ye can't complain
I love Luke Kelly but we generally get rubbish acts over here ruining his music. I would love to go to see this guy perform. Thanks for the info.
There is an hour long program on Luke Kelly tonight on RTE 1 10.35, I think it has been shown before. It will partially clash with This Is England 86 though.
Think its a repeat of the programme posted on page 3 of the Documentaries thread. Will watch it again though, great musician and character.
the man who is the nearest to him is Damien Dempsey.Seen Damo belt out the Rocky Road and Sullivans John backstage in Kilkenny and the power in his voice and the intensity is luke-ish
Think this is the lad who played in a pub i worked in in Dundalk about three years back it was a great night. Huge luke kelly fan, think I seen the documentry before his sister and brother in law are on it talking about him growing up in Sherrif st and when the family moved away he kept running back. On a side note what did people think of this is england 86? Just ok i tought but will hopefully get better
Never saw that before , pure class had a few goose bumps watching that. gona search youtube for the foggy dew another great song
You should get The Performer dvd. Some outstanding live performances especially Raglan Road and Monto. Also some interviews from Ronnie Drew,Mary Black to name but a few.
