It's another non-entity story by a lazy media. They were only trying to trade mark the particular emblem of the Liver Bird that is on the club crest. This was to prevent knock off merchandise using it, to maximise income for the club (God knows it needs all the income it can get to compete these days). Saying that they wanted to take over or highjack the Liver Bird is like saying all pictures of bottles, regardless of shape, is the property of Coca-Cola. Rubbish.
