I'm looking for advice on what new TV to buy.
I've got vouchers for Dixons for 550euros
and am willing to spend a couple hundred more than that.

Has anyone any good advice to offer. I defo do want an LCD but defo don't want that jumpy movement you see on some TVs when sport is on.

After all, what's the point in a new telly if you can't watch Liverpool on it??:)

I got a Samsung 50" Plasma with free DVD in powercity for 900 lids back in September. I think it was around the same price in Dixons.

you'd get a decent samsung 40" LCD for a grand, but wait for the sales, might be lucky and get the tv and ps3 for a grand:)

I've got a PS2 which I'm still very happy with but could think about a PS3 in future so HD would be a must.

What's the difference in full HD and HD ready?

I got a 42' Samsung Full HD LDC tv 6 months back and love it. If you want to futureproof yourself get a Full HD tv which the resolution is 1080p and is the highest you can get which most manufacturers are moving towards. Dont ask me what the difference is between normal HD ie 1080i and Full HD 1080p as the look almost the same but the Full HD is slightly sharper.

Also dont get conned with the term HD Ready every tv in every shop is HD ready all it means is it can display a HD signal just not in HD but in standard definition, its a clever sales tool, make sure the tv says resoluton 1080i or 1080p somewhere on the specs or someone is pulling a fast one on you.

    Hi

I've the Sony (ranked 2nd in that Top 10 list linked above, good list btw :)) ... it's excellent, must say I'm trilled with it.

When I was buying it, I went up to the TV shop the day a match was on (not LFC) and got them to put it on, several of the TVs which I was considering, to see the difference in picture quality ... amazing how big a difference there was, despite many of the TVs being expensive, "household name" brands etc etc.

Top advice above, wait til the sales mate, you'll save a fortune and still have an excellent choice of TVs.

I know you probably want it pre-Xmas, but seriously hang on a few weeks mate and save the dosh, you'll probably save enough to cover you for a return trip to Anfield ;)

I have a Samsung also and would recommend them even though they sponsor the Chavs.

Off topic but has anyone else noticed that all the Dixons shops are gone. Dixons in Liffey Valley is now a Currys shop and in Jervis Centre its a PC World.

    In summary:

    • Buy a Sony or Samsung. I have a Sony 40in LCD 1080p. Great set.
    • In the past, LCD technology lagged behind Plasma when it came to larger screen sizes. Nowadays this problem no longer exists. Buy a good branded set and you won't get any action blur etc. The best advice, if you wish to be sure, is get the sales person to show you it working. NOTE: Ask for them to put on terrestrial tv. Most stores show HD movies on their screens - to show the power. TV stations will of course be far less quality (in fact, you may be surprised to hear that technically speaking the old CRT's show standard TV (analog or digital) better). But you'll get a better idea of the picture from them (after all - you'll be mostly watching Liverpool games on TV :D). Find a sports channel and watch it for a few minutes. On a good set you will not see any blurring of fast moving objects.
    • Do not buy a plasma - unless you are buying a seriously high end unit, and will not be trying to sell it second hand. This technology (while ironically newer than LCD) is fast becoming defunct. Some plasma screens also suffered from something called "screen burn". Take for example Sky Sports News, with ticker tapes and logos everywhere. After time the "ghost" of these logos etc can "burn" onto the screen leaving a shadow.
    • Also do not buy a rear projection screen just because you see a great deal. The salesman will be laughing at you as you leave the store.
    • As mentioned, wait until after xmas. You say you have a dixons voucher; fair enough. But it may be worth considering buying online. For example komplett have some good deals occassionaly. I bought my LCD from them - saved €350 at the time compared to a Sony Centre (and that included paying €100 delivery at the time (huge/heavy set)).

Good luck, and most of all, enjoy :)

This is very true Setanta Ireland is a perfect example. If you watch the Liverpool match tomorrow on Sky HD and then when thats over switch over to Setanta to watch the 3pm game iin SD t will almost look blurry or the picture ghosting, sports broadcast in SD can suffer very badly on HD tvs and remember shops will be using top of the line leads too to improve the picture that can be well over €100 for a 1.5m HDMI lead that most of us probably dont have.

Harvey Norman is usually the best to see how a tv looks as they havent a clue how to hook stuff up properly so the picture you see in their stores is more or less what you can expect to get yourself.
