They way things are going right now a win seems very attainable. But seeing as its after internationals, an early kick off, and at a ground where we never seem to get much, I think I'd be happy enough with a draw from this one. Would hope Carra is fit for this one too.

Tough place to go and get a result, but I reckon we will 2-1

Can't see Javi playing after being in Oz and Gerrard could be touch and go after playing for England with the injections. I'd expect Momo & Xabi in the middle for this game.

Pepe

Finnan
Carra
Agger
Arbeloa

Pennant
Xabi
Momo
Riise

Torres
Kuyt

Stevie will be suffering from his own selfishness playing through the pain barrier with England. Masch will just be back from South America and I think he might use Riise taking a more defensive approach starting off, then bring on Babel against tired legs second half.
3 points is a big ask but I think we can do it.......1-0 Kuyt goal to clinch it

Getting back to football I can see Vorinin back in for this game
I think this guy is top class (won't say world class yet) and if given a good opportunity will be hard to leave out as the season goes on.
My team would be

Pepe

Finnan
Hyypia
Agger
Riise

Pennant
Alonso
Mascherano
Babel

Vorinin
Torres

This will be a tough game a win here will be a very good result
tough place to go to for a win but will predict an away win 0-2

The best thing about these posts is that most have no Carra and no Stevie and yet still predict a win. Shows that we are not a two man team anymore. Think it will be a difficult game as Pompy have a great record at home the last 2/3 seasons. Would not be disapointed to be still unbeaten after this one. Will be an interesting team selection (as always) but should be a statement of intent for the season to play the strongest team we can. I think that if Stevie is fit enough to play for England then he should be ok for this, but Xabi is suspended for Spain after the red at the weekend so he will probably start with Momo for me.

I really rate that lad Utaka wherever they found him

I think he'll be this year's Berbatov

Having said that, I rate super Nando even more! Woud like to see Masch get a proper run out these days. 2-0 or 2-1 to us,

Don't think he'll risk Carra, Stevie hadn't played for a while and I think Rafa will not want him playing 3 games in a week & Finnan highly doubtful. The Chief is flying around the world so will be jet-lagged and Torres can't be expected to start & play every game - Kuyt could easily play in place of Voronin but I'll go with above

Would be more than happy with a 1-0 win

It's a must win really. I know it's a tough place to go but we should be taking points from them. Last year we lost because of the athens build up and the year before we won. Morientes scored one of his scarce goals. For once it's on the Tele although we have to wear white socks!!

Initial reports suggested he was injured but then transpired it was to protect him against a yellow card which would have seen him suspended

We lost last year and just won the year before(two goals in the last 5 or six minutes). I think it wa 2-1 the year before that. It's not a guarenteed 3 points or even one point. It's gonna be tough.

Yeah very stupid of Arbeloa! There giving us free kick after free kick around their area, but we haven't troubled James once, apart from Crouch getting through, Stevie or Torres need to come one so we can threaten properley!

Yeah i agree with you avid, also it might not have been the best game from our perspective, but it wasn't a bad game, very exciting towards the end, and i thought we played some nice football in spells, just lacked in the final quarter!

Utaka missed a sitter, and Pepe saved a pen, i'm happy with the point!:)

you have to admit he was awful.
imo he added nothin today, he looked awkward and didnt know what to do when he got the ball

He is 4th choice now, torres, kuyt, voronin, crouch.

Fair enough he wasn't all that great today, but you can't go asking if his days are numbered based on just one performance. As for not knowing what to do when he got the ball, he didn't really get much of a chance to show us did he? Not too much quality ball reached him today, and he often had to come back to midfield to pick up the ball, not something he should have to be doing.

Aido82
15-09-2007, 04:37 PM
i know what you saying, but he is a sriker, he job is to get into the box ( he doesnt do this) fair enough todays game was brutal, but for a big man like crouch - balls should be whipped into him for him to head, he cant head for shi*e.

And now he is stalling on signing a new contract, i think rafa will show him who is boss and sell him in january

James
15-09-2007, 05:26 PM
For the past two weeks I was optimistic that we would win the game then I saw the team that Rafa selected and I immediately felt we would be lucky to get anything. Today was always going to be a good indicator as to how different the team and approach is this season to previous ones. There was a first 11 in that squad easily capable of beating Portsmouth. I know its a tough place to visit but if you want to win the title you have to win these games and play your best team. If you want to win the Champions League you rest your star players days before the game. It is obvious where Rafa's priorities lie after today's selection and I don't think we will win the title if Rafa continues this approach :(

As for the match itself - how bad were Portsmouth for the first 25mins?? Bloody hell they should of been put to the sword. Unfortunately their midfield got into the game and we sunk to their level for the rest of the game. More worryingly is that we looked very tired at times. I'm all for backing up Rafa on this early kick off lark but Arsenal and the mancs kicked off early today and won so thats not washing with me.

Bring on Porto.

A point will do. Given the circumstances, it is really hard to rouse yourself for an early games after a week of internationals.

This is a game we lost last year, so its still points in the bag. Chelsea drawing was good for us.

A bit ominous the arsenal run tho. The dark horses seem to be showing true to their preseason form

Some positives...clean sheet, point from a tough spot, could have been a lot worse.

Negatives...they just didn't seem up for it to my eye, Portsmouth were there for the taking even for a second string.

Getting very concerned by Xabi's all too regular poor performances,

...& I had Voronin for first goal damn it:(

Positives as above

negatives, drinking 3 pints that early in the day and then being grumpy for the day....thank god for that tragic comedy in bordeaux to put things in perspective...a point in pompey isnt the end of the world

Fcuk resting players for europe, we should be starting our best XI in every premiership match especially an away tie against a side with an excellent home record, fair enough some players could have been tired but its the start of the season and if SG,torres and babel did play Im sure we would have had that game wrapped up within an hour and then take them off. you dont see the manc scum and chelski making as many changes. Momo, crouch, yossi, voronin were poor and are subs end of. alonso too wasnt the best, he hasnt done the business in a long time now. IMO this should be the starting XI for every premiership match if we want number 19 back where it belongs, its been too f*cking long

Pepe, Arbeloa, Carra, Agger, Finnan, Pennant, SG, Masch, Babel, Kuyt,Torres

fitzpatrickgary
17-09-2007, 09:30 AM
i know its a long season and players need to be rotated( as much as want to see our best 11 start )but id rather he do it at home .away from home start with a strong team then take off our better players ie gerrard carra torres if its going well

stephenocall
17-09-2007, 10:09 AM
Portsmouth is always a tough place to go to, a point is not a bad result but we were lucky to come away with a point.
Torres should have started, hes young and fit and resting him a couple of matches into the season is ridiculous!!
Hopefully we will teach porto a thing or two 2moro nite!!

Malzheimer
17-09-2007, 10:57 AM
Poor performance from the lads Rafa put out. Even with a weaker 11 we should be able to turn over Pompey. I have to say I was disappointed not to see SG and Torres in the first 11. As said before on this thread, whats the point in resting players for Champs Lge games when our priority is the league. However I would of reluctantly taken a draw before the game. However after the game with some of the sitters they missed a draw in Pompey isn't a bad result, and it helped that the Chavs dropped points at home.......Swings and Roundabouts Jose, deal with it.

Paul
17-09-2007, 11:02 AM
I don't believe Rafa was giving priority to Tuesday's nights game. I think he was more concerned about the international hangover. Players would only have arrived back from internationals on Thursday at different times no doubt. They would have had very little work that day. Friday the players then gather for a light training session and head off to Portsmouth that afternoon due to the early kick off. Absolutely no preparation for an away premiership match. It doesn't surprise me that the starting team consisted of almost all players who didn't feature midweek. All in all still a woeful performance but i'm happy with the away point with a home game against Birmingham to follow, good opportunity for us to maintain our good and unbeaten start to the season. Chelsea or Moan Utd (Hopefully both)will drop points.
