Rafa Benitez: Wants to end Chelsea's unbeaten home record

    Saturday October 25,2008
By Paul Joyce and Tony Banks Have your say(0)
RAFA BENITEZ has told his Liverpool players they have their best chance to break their Stamford Bridge hoodoo even though star striker Fernando Torres will miss the top-of-the-table collision with Chelsea.

“We know Torres is a key player for us but we have enough quality in the squad,†said Benitez. “We showed this against United and that was very positive. Robbie Keane is scoring in the Champions League now, so hopefully he can start in the Premier League. Dirk Kuyt has already started, and that is a positive.

“I think we can beat them without Torres. We have enough to beat a very good team like Chelsea. If we want to be contenders it depends on the whole squad and not just one player.

“You always want to win against your rivals. Our record is something we can change on Sunday.†Benitez admits that the task will be tougher because Chelsea are now more attack-minded than in previous seasons.

“Scolari is improving the squad and team. It is more or less the same idea, but they are more offensive than before,†he said. “I think they are a good team. I don’t want say they are better than they were under Mourinho because I don’t want to start a war of words – but they are more offensive, that is clear.â€

    Scolari: Respects Reds

Liverpool have won just once at Chelsea in the history of the Premier League and Benitez is still looking for his first win over them away from Anfield. The two teams will put their unbeaten records on the line tomorrow with Benitez confident his team can bring Chelsea’s 86-match unbeaten home run in the league to a halt.

And Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari admitted last night that he knows that Chelsea are not invincible. Scolari said: “I don’t ever talk about us being unbeaten. We are not invincible. But we need to fight to make sure we don’t lose. We can get better, and are working hard to improve.

You always want to win against your rivals
    Rafa Benitez

And he warned: “Rafa Benitez has a great record against Chelsea. But we need to change that record some time. Now is that time. We need to break the cycle. But we need to respect Liverpool. They never accept that they will lose. That’s the difference now compared with other seasons.â€

Scolari has not tasted defeat in 12 games as Blues boss, and his team have not let in a goal in six games. Scolari won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002, twice won the Copa Libertadores in South America with Gremio and Palmeiras – but he admits this team is making him happier than any of those outfits.

“This team is making me more happy than at any time in my life,†he said. “I have always wanted professionalism and passion. I’m getting that.â€

Wheres Bruo Cherou when you need him?????? LoL.

This will be a very though game especially without Nando. As Rafa said he is confident we can go there and win without Nando, we've proven that against the Mancs. I really think we could come out on top against Chelski on Sunday if we show no fear and have real go at them. I fancy Keane to break his premier league duck too.(if he plays).

If Keane plays and scores (in a win) Id be well chuffed as it could begin to cement his place as a redman. So far he just hasnt made a connection with the fans. He needs a big goal to do that.

I agree Istvankozma, He needs that big goal, allthough I think the fans do appreciate the work he does for he team, but a winner against the Chavs today would be a big step to making life a lot easer for him and his confidance and maybe turning him into a hero:)

I'm liking this new air of confidence surrounding Rafa's statements. He would never have made this comment in recent years, but following on the back of his comparison with his Valencia team, I think he really believes we will win the league this year, and I'd much prefer to think the he believes it rather than just the fans.
