Sister in law is getting one or the other for her kids at xmas. Which would you recommend and why? I understand the Xbox 360 is a lot cheaper than PS3 and the PS3 has blue-ray. Other than that I wouldn't know myself.
Might be an idea to look at this previous thread... http://irishkop.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1890&highlight=xbox
I was involved in that original thread and 9 months on I have not plugged in my XBox 360 once, the PS3 games have caught up, anyone who plays GTA or Fifa online knows that that the online gameing has caught up too where it matters. It also has the blu ray factor that doesnt just relate to movies but means much larger games can fit on a disc compared to the 360's dvd discs. If you can afford a PS3 get it, if you cant I'd wait until you can as this Christmas is when the PS3 is going put the 360 into the ground. At the moment there are 21.35m 360's sold to the PS3s' 15.84m while that sounds far more the 360 was released a year before the PS3 and had no competition as the Wii wasn't out then either.
Thanks Pimboli. Good to get an up to date response as 9 months since original thread was live is a long time in console terms and things change.
Definately go for ps3. Graphics far better and as mentioned already, i think it will defo outsell the xbox this christmas.
I have the PS3, I got it when it first came out and I havent been impressed but thats only cause a lot of good games are only coming out now so I would now say PS3.
depends on what she wants. a 360 is a great gaming console, the graphics are just as good(there isnt one game on PS3 that looks better than a 360 version) and its back catalogue is bigger than PS3's and its much cheaper. PS3 however is free to play online, has blu-ray capability(which hasnt been needed for games yet, may do in the future but id have my doubts) and has a better reliability record. you might need a further discussion with your sis-in law to nail down the decision.
Every PS3 game is on a scratch resistant blu ray disc and when it comes to RPG games it will make a difference in the future as 9GB compared to 50GB is quite a difference in memory. As for the reliability record the PS3 has a pretty good record, the 360 has a very bad record as in the states last year 1 in 5 machines were brought back with problems (a quick google will give you the stats) as well as being known for scratching discs while they are in the machine, the door jamming, machine crashing as well as loud fan noise that is very distracting. You also may have noticed on cross platform games the 360 version are always now coming with free gifts and the like to try and get people to get that version as in a straight choice people are picking the PS3 version a good bit more than the 360. Remember I have both machines so Im not a PS3 head with blinkers on but I have had a lot of problems with the 360 and am on my second one with no difference which is why I stopped using it. My PS3 I have had for nearly 18 months now getting it the day of release and touch wood, have yet to have one single problem with it.
example? nearly every big game on any console comes with free gifts when you pre-order but you get damn all when buying normally. I agree that the ps3 is the most future proof console. however, blu-rays are not invulnerable to scratches, 360 has kept up with the ps3 on the graphics, 9gb has been enough for games for years now(dont forget the pc is dvd-rom games too) and 360's latest chipsets seem to be relible(although in fairness, that still doesnt print a trustworthy picture.) for a sheer gaming console, id go with the 360 but the ps3 is still a good console and is finally starting to gather a bit of momenteum. either way, its the wii that will undeservingly sell out for christmas!
I also own both , if you compare them.... Price: Ps3 €400 VS xbox €180: this does get you an xbox without a hard drive, but the hard drive is not nessecary. The hard drive one is about €250 i think. Winner: either way 360 wins comfortable in this catagory Games: This is fairly close Its all about personal taste really. You could pick up alot of cheap second hand games for the Xbox though. Ps3 games are completely region free though so you can import games from the US, ends up costing less than €50 for a new release (this is taking into consideration the $ has gotten stronger). Winner: Draw-ish, 360 probably edges it Reliability: Its well documented how poor the 360s reliability is, but in fairness to MS there return service is excelent, its less likely that you'll run into bother with PS3, but sony dont give the same level of support. Winner PS3 Performance: Currently the Ps3 does not out perform the 360 on any cross platform game(well at least not clearly noticeable), it is widely accepted that the Ps3 hasnt reached its full potential yet while the 360 progression is begining to loose steam. Ps3 wins this one Connectivity and controllers: The Ps3 comes with Wifi built in, the 360 wifi module costs €70(discrace!). the 360 controller is nicer IMO but it requires AA batteries, the Ps3 one comes with built in ones that you charge with a USB cable. I can buy a spare set of wires for the Ps3(tv and power) for less than €10 so i can leave sets at a few diffrent Tvs, it would cost about €60 to do the same for the 360. Winner Ps3 Online: Its better on the 360, but it costs money on the 360, really depends on how often you use i guess. Winner: depends on usage Style and other: Ps3 looks better(IMO) is a very good bluray player and is much quiter. Winner ps3
I dont have either, but want to get my hands on FIFA 09 and play it online. Can I do this on both the PS3 and xbox free of charge (I have wireless broadband)?
You can play FIFA09 online allright but for xboxlive you'll need a gold membership which will cost you €60 for the year, I think online gaming with a PS3 is free.
cheers man, must look into it. The only game I have played in the last three years is Football Manager. Got fed up of playing the computer on the consoles. The whole online multiplayer gaming though has an appeal. Do they have tournaments for cash?
Not sure if they have tournaments for cash, you could maybe try pesrankings.com if your a PES player if your any good you could win your self a few plasma tvs for xmas. I would highly recommend playing GTAIV online its some laugh, 16 players on at the same time trying to blow each others heads off great fun.
iv an xbox and i have to say at the start i was used 2 the playstations and thought id never pick up an xbox but im glad i did cause the ps3 is 2 pricey compare to the xbox i think there 179 now . and also fair play to xbox there great because iv had the xbox since last year sometime but a month ago it froze on me and there were red lights and i though no fecking way. so i rang the shop i bought it in and they were no help cause they just want to sell things not fix them so i looked up xbox on d net got a free number 4 xbox 1800509186 and jesus fair play to them i explained what was wrong thinking era id have to buy a new 1 but no thanks to xbox they got my address of me told me take the hard drive out and just find a box and throw the box in a day later UPS came to my house and collected it. and it went to frankfurt . 2 weeks later it came back fixed and a sorry explaintion and a month free xbox live card which was nice of them even though i play xbox live anyway. but to awnser your queation id pick an xbox specially after what they done and it was all free to get fixed. what more could i ask 4 . i dont know if playstation are so good at treating custumers with probloms as good as xbox . up 2 yourself mate but after this write im going up playing fifa 09 on my xbox which is a great game this year and i play world class level and compare to previous games its alot tougher than fifa 08 or 7 and its great to have myself torres and keane up front scoring 4 the team i love lol
