Now Im not a dub (thankfully :D ) but I do like to see them do well.
But I am a bit bemused by the potential appointment of Pat Gilroy.
The man hasnt any management experience to speak about, and lets be honest , while he did make a sub appearance in the dubs all ireland win he wasnt exactly a star. I suppose people will say he is someone who would be close to and respected by the players, but if someone put say Dessie Farrell forward then people would really sit up and take notice.

In a way it is akin to the appointment of Stan to the Ireland job, a former player not long finished, with completely no managerial experience, and Mickey Wheln taking the Bobby Robson role.

Maybe no management experience at intercounty level, but a highly respected business man who has coached his club to an all ireland win. I think Dublin fans should give him a chance. There isnt an all ireland in their team at the moment in my opinion (not trying to p*ss anyone off!) but I think Gilroy is a shrewd officer, who will get the players playing for each other, and there will be less of the them Vs us mentality of the last management.

Ah high profile manager would probably have only lasted a year in the job and blown out, where as I think Gilroy will have more sticking power, and if he leaves after 12months then i think the squad will be better off than it was before.

I'm a bit unsure bout this appointment myself but let's support the fella and hope it works out.

Even if he turns out to be a disappointment we will still beat Meath :p

Yeah similar to Stans appointment. He played for Vinnie's All Ireland winning team this year. He has some coaching experience with DCU from what I've read this morning but this is a huge step up.

    :D

Agree with this. He is not proven in the area of management yet and thought they would have went for someone with a bit more experience but having said that let's give him the support and see how it pans out. He might bring in some new talent and get rid of the cronyism from the McCaffrey era - I'll be happy with that for a start.

Im stunned by the amount of coverage this appointment has received. People where I work are yabbering on about it. Kildare will win it all next year, im sure of that. 'We' were robbed by Cork this year.

PS: MrsStevieG, I am bursting here with innuendos for you on this one. Unfortunately, I have to be a good boy. Kudos on the use of the word 'cronyism' from the grammar police.

Couldn't agree more. Don't think this is the answer for the Dubs. Cannot believe the Dub County Board will not swallow there pride an get someone from outside the county

There was talk in the press about Joe Kiernan a while back but Dublin's County Board were never going to appoint him (or as you said, anyone else from outside).

Let's just hope Gilroy proves a pleasant surprise. But he will have his work cut out to convince the masses

Kildare is the hub of Ireland, fyi. Dublin is like our ugly sister.

I'm not surprised one of Leinster Footballs weakest counties hates us. Everyone hates a winner! ;)

    Another Leinster title beckons....

The best thing that could happen is that Dublin get bet the first day out against Meath. The hype of winnin Leinster and all those games will not be there and they can snake in through the back door...it's worth a shot!

Jesus we can't lose to Meath though! Anyone but them. I went to school in Meath and I've been lording it over those Green Feckers for several years now. I enjoy it way too much to stop now. The cries of "you'll never beat the Royal" are long gone. Target practice for us nowadays.

Anti-meath rant over. I know what you're saying. Back door might take some of the heat off the players, management, etc.

But as soon as we get to the quarter finals it'll all be right back again.
Media focus so intensely on the Dubs. Hard to shake off.

I'm a huge GAA fan involved with Thomas Davis and know ****** Nugent well, he done a great job with our seniors but never brought the golden grail.

on the other hand he has won the Dublin championship 3 times and beaten in an All Ireland Final by Pat O Sheas team Dr Crokes, this is evedent too with the rest of the Dublin mgt selectors.

Whelan has done it at all levels, he also won a club all Ireland this year with Vinniea and Pat Gilroy was involved. Unfortunately I do not know too much about the other chap Paady O Donoughue only he is rated with a couple of guys i know when he was with the minor team in Crokes and he was involved with lyons when they too went to the All Ireland club final.

So winning is in all there blood, I agree we should give them a chance, however Im afraid this may not be echoed by other Dub fans, none the less we should hold out our opinions and give Gilroy and his team an honest go

I think it is a good choice -the new manager was always going to be from within the pale. Once Brian Mullins ruled himself out ( he would have been my first choice) the Whelan/Gilroy ticket would have been my next preference.

Gilroy has no intercounty coaching experience - however he is primarily there as a manager looking after the logistics, dealing with the media - which is hugely important with Dublin etc. He is well suited to this rule being a very shrewd businessman and knowing how the GAA works - through his involvement with Vincents and Dublin. Remember he was on a shortlist of 3 for the Director General job earlier this year.

Whelan is there primarily as a coach for which he is well qualified. The two have proven that they can work together through their involvement with Vincents.
