The South African-born midfielder was officially arrested on suspicion of assault after the allegation of domestic violence had been made. Pienaar, 26, turned himself-in at a police station in the city where he was questioned by detectives and released pending further inquires. The South African signed for Everton on 22nd April 2008 in after a period spend at the club on loan from a German club. He has been side-lined at Goodison this season after he suffered a fracture to a bone in his big toe in pre-season training. A Merseyside Police spokeswoman yesterday said: "We can confirm that a 26-year-old man from the Sefton Park area of Mossley Hill was arrested on suspicion of assault. "He was arrested yesterday and was questioned about a complaint of assault which appears to be of a domestic nature. "He attended a police station on his own account and after questioning he was released pending further enquires." It is the second time Pienaar has been accused of assaulting a woman. In January 2006 Pienaar spent a night in police custody in Amsterdam after his girlfriend reported him for domestic violence. At the time he was reported to have hit her in a fight but there was no report of the outcome of the investigation by Dutch police. Steven Jerome Pienaar was born 17 March 1982 in Johannesburg, South Africa and made his name with Dutch giants Ajax. He moved to Borussia Dortmund in 2007 and signed for Everton in a #2 million deal earlier this year.
