How does everybody think well do in this one. I was happy with result the other day against Georgia. I think another 3points should be on the cards here.
Come on you boys in green

Yeah, hopefully, at least they now look like a team. Every player seems to know what his role in the team is.
That was missing in the last couple of years.

Yes thats it, ad hopefully we'd gaine some momentum and get some belief going within the squad. If us and Italy win our next games we could be 5points ahead of everyone already.. That would be great

Don't run away with yourselfs,Montenegro are a very good side for a pot 4 team. They were only in pot 4 as they are a new nation and have only played 15 odd games.
We should still win but it will not be a walk in the park.

I no it wont be a walk in the park. No game is. I do think we'll beat em though.

I hope we beat them, even if only to keep certain tv experts quiet, bunch of heathens. Got to love Souness, Giles etc criticising managerial decisions, the irony of it all.
Will be a tough match though, any points we get out of the game will be hard earned, Bulgaria didnt have it easy there on Saturday.

Tough game ahead but we can win it.
My main concern will be the heat. Apparently it's likely to be 30c or higher for this one...
This game will not be easy, and hopefully Keane can kick start his season and start scoring goals!!! They have a good chance to get 3 points.

I found it funny that Souness mentioned every five mins about Stephen Reid 'I signed the boy for Blackburn'. He did not mention that fact he also signed that donkey of a CB Kivalasvilia or whatever for Blackburn also. He was one of the worst georgian players.

Montenegro were a 6th seed, due to them been new. As I joked on another site, when was the last time we were terrified of facing the 6th seeds?? :)
We have the hardest group of the lot. If we can win this one, we have the potential to win our first 5 games, and relax when Bulgaria and Italy take points off each other next month.

You are right I was thinking of the champions league draw were the pot for teams are the worst.
I think we got the one of the hardest teams in pot 6,5 and 4.Although Bulgaria are a good side they were one of the weakest if not he weakest team in pot 2,the pot 1 team was always going to be a through team.
So they way I see it this is a mixed draw could have been a lot worse,if we beat them teams who are seeded behind us we will have a very good chance of at least a play off.But thats a big if.

They,ve done us a real favour by taking points off Bulgaria, but only if we win.

Agree, if we can win these games, then it would be us that the other teams would not fancy playing
agree that this wont be easy by any means, bulgaria scored very late to snatch a draw. a win would be fantastic for us.

A win would be fantastic because you know they will take points off other teams as they did on Saturday, i also think Gerogia may take points off other teams when they actually play in Georgia and not Germany.
Tonights game is followed by 3 home games which in all fairness we should win our home games against Cyprus, Gerogia and Bulgaria. Bulgaria will be tough, but if we can win all of these i think we have a great chance of winning the group, (getting a bit ahead of myself there)...but why not. Confidence seems to be back in the team.
Only worry would be injuries to the team, if any of the back 4 are injured i think we are in trouble, not much to come in to replace Finann, Dunne, O shea or Kilbane so that would worry me.
Fingers crossed though, good luck tonight lads.
A draw wouldnt be a bad result but we are capable of winning over there which would leave us in a fantastic position

With the heat being the biggest factor Ireland need to go at them early doors, play the way we did on saturday with maybe Andy Reid on from the start as he gives more going forward than Whelan...then shut up shop 2nd half
A draw wouldnt be a bad result
Surely you're having a laugh
I can see where dg2 is coming from here - Montenegro are a decent footballing side and only 6th seeds due to not having played a competitive game yet. Already after drawing with Bulgaria and they will have hopes of finishing the group in the top 3.
That said, if we are to hold major hopes of qualifying then we have to be winning this game. Finishing top of the group will get you to South Africa but only 8 of the 9 second placed teams will make it to the playoffs and judging by the strength of our group I think the 2nd placed team will drop a fair few points along the way and could be the one to suffer.
Surely you're having a laugh
as sean said they drew with Bulgaria at the weekend which was a very good result but based on the 1st half we should be getting all 3 points here

Reid or Keough should have came on for Hunt or McGeady

Robbie was one of the best players out there tonight...warming up nicely for saturday. Would have liked to have seen a few changes to freshen it up for the last 15-20. Cautious by Trappatoni when we were begining to impose ourselves..

A bit dissapointed with that result in the end i thought we had enough to
go on and beat them. We looked more imposing in 2nd half and i thoght we could have won it.
I would of liked to see Andy Reid get the last 15-20mins to shake things up a bit on the left hand side for Hunt. Hunt did ok but looked a bit out of it as the game went on.
Anyway 4 points is not too bad and we are looking good as a team.
Probably should have won the game, definately should have got a penalty just before half time. Saying that Given had to make a couple of decent saves in the 2nd half and Reid should have came on for Hunt for the last 15-20 mins just to freshen things up a bit imo

That was a stone wall peno if ever i saw one and the poxy ref was
in a decent position to give it aswell.
Straight away i thought we had a peno and jumped up only for the ref to
continue the game, how did he not give that????

Not so sure about the 2 points dropped, not many teams in the group will win there. Was impressed with Whelan thought he played very well but i also thought with 20 mins left that Steven Reid was out on his feet and could have been replaced. Their number 8 was a dirty diving bar-steward wish someone hadda whacked him good!

They should take confidence from the game...controlling any game in an away international is a decent performance. Could well've won it (McGeady or Peno shout) too. At least they look like a team now and were looking for a winner rather than camping on the edge of the area for the last 15mins. They're well organised. That said they could well have come away with nothing without Given.

Only got to listen on radio 1- they said it was McGeady's best game for Ireland. Seems Given made a great late save also. 4 points from 1st 2 away games is not to be sniffed at.

Thought we did well tonight and happy with the result we were unlucky not to score but Given also got us out of a few sticky spots too (he's our Reina!!!). Can't believe they said McGeady had his best game for Ireland:confused: I thought he was brutal!.
Anyway, happy overall we're starting to look half organised at least. Even Eamo was happy after so we must have been good!:)
Yea I thought we would of won this one lads. We should of had a peno, how the ref didnt give it I dont no.... McGeady had his best game my arse. Hes muck. Is it me or is he so frustrating to watch.

Disappointed not to win the game but at least there's a few positives to take from it especially the whelan/reid combination which even though reid wasn't 100% is being cultivated into a strong central midfield partnership. Think Andy reid should have come on tho to replace Hunt or McGeady near the end. But 4 points from 6 ain't bad!

Montenegro 0 - 0 Ireland
Over the 2 games, 4 pts would have been the target so this was another reasonable night of football business for Ireland. Again a 4-4-2 system, no changes, so everyone knew what to expect and how to play. Stability of formation and personel is a good sign. The team lined out as follows:
-------------- Given ----------
Finnan - Dunne - O'Shea - Kilbane
McGeady - Whelan - S.Reid - Hunt
------ Keane ------ Doyle -----
We had a few chances, they had a few chances. Hard to believe but they had nearly twice as many attempts on goal as we did, 16 to 7 or something. As is usual, when we have Shay, he usually saves our bacon and he did that again last night. Without him we probably would have lost, so that will put our display in its context.
There were of course positives. Dunne and O'Shea looked solid, although we have to remind ourselves that the opposition team are no great shakes overall, they are still finding their feet and are short quality in all positions on the park. Finnan had a stormer of a game, again food for thought for Rafa Benitez perhaps. Kilbane nearly slipped up to gift a goal chance, and I always worry when he is in our team. How he can have played so many matches for Ireland is beyond me and the logic of most people! He may prove a banana skin in the more sterner tests that are yet to come.
Whelan was good and safe, and Stephen Reid was able to play through his injury and had a another good game. Whelan keeps things simple and doesnt do much going forward, apart form the odd foray. He did one jink once though and brought a shot onto his left foot which was very good neat football. So he is more than just a midfield 'knock it across and keep it moving' passer type of player.
McGeady did a lot of good running and moves on the right side that he doesnt prefer. Playing out of position is not easy so he has to be commended for this. Yes, he did miss that chance, but Aiden is not a shooter. Its one of the aspects of his game which many including myself have been screaming as a need to improve upon. He should be taking an hour after every training session and doing nothing but shooting practice. He strikes the ball all wrong and doesnt follow through with the instep. This is coaching and practice. Not a fault of the Irish set-up or Trap and the staff, but at Celtic, who only really want him for putting in crosses which he can do sweetly with both feet. But as good as he is at crosses, he is equivalently bad at shooting. It is something that can be rectified though.
Hunt worked tirelessly. As the TV panel showed, he recovers the ball as much as he gives it away. Such work rate will get rewarded perhaps in games where we will have naturally less of the ball, such as v Italy and Bulgaria. The debate about whether to include Andy Reid or Hunt will rage on. I think there was a case for putting Andy Reid on for the last 15 mins or so.
Keane did well, as did Doyle. Robbie nearly pulled off a spectacular turn and shot in the box which was unluckily too close to their keeper. Hit at pace, if it was just a yard further to the left it would have given their keeper no chance and would have been a certain goal and no doubt a filip to Robbies goalscoring confidence for his next Liverpool endeavours. Overall though, these two Irish games will have done him more good than harm.
Its true that Trap could have used a sub or two to change things around and look for a winning goal. He seemed happy enough with the draw though, and overall, 4 pts is about on target from those first two matches. Next up is home v Cyprus where nothing less than a win and 3 pts will do. So far so good, but it will still be difficult for us to qualify with both Bulgaria and Italy in this group. The big games are yet to come.

Not too disappointed we did no worse than Bulgaria did there.
I feel a bit tinged by the fact we could and should have won the game also. Montenegro were there for the taken if Trappa had of been more positive.
We need to beat Cyprus and Georgia in 2 games espeically going into Bulgaria next March. it would put us in a nice position 10 points from 4 games would be perfect!

I think the media are being almost overly positive about it and are afraid to rock the boat a bit. Yeah, the performance was solid but Trap made no substitutions to change the game. He's very cautious, maybe overly cautious against basic enough opposition. Bulgaria, out main rivals drew there so it was an opportunity to gain two points on them. Whelan said after the game that the manager sets them out not to concede... sure it's an away point but if you want to get out of the group I just feel it was two points dropped.

Shay was excellent but a lot of those 16 attempts were audacious efforts from 30 yards that ended up in row z.
He's very cautious, maybe overly cautious against basic enough opposition.
John Giles addressed this point really well when Whelan was saying Reid should have come on. Trap is showing faith in his players and fostering stability in the team – this will help the team grow in confidence. The team continued attacking until the end and they were much better in the last 15mins than recent Irish teams who became cautious, retreated to the edge of the box and usually conceded.
I was shouting at the TV to bring Andy Reid on after 70mins but for all we know it could have changed the game for the worse. This way AR knows he needs to work hard to get into the team and that should be a good thing.
Well done Trap!
