It's like a TV drama alright. ANyone see Hillary's tearful antics during the week - got her a few votes anyway.

I heard on the radio this morning that Paddy Power paid out €75k to punters last week who backed Obama to get the Democratic nomination. I imagine whoever made that decision is feeling a little uneasy this morning.

I reckon your right with the publicity stunt alright. Sure there'd be no reason to do it otherwise. It reminds me of the story of the Manc bookie though, who paid out on Man U to win the league at xmas and Blackburn ended up winning it come May. You'd wonder whats the point, surely you'd be better off leaving that money in a bank account for 6 months and let a nice bit of interest build up on it.

Personally, I'd agree 100% mate, but it seems some of the bookies rather get the publicity attached to paying out early etc -

I'd have thought that PaddyPower would have gotten just as much publicity if they had not paid out the €75k above .. and only spent maybe €10k on newspaper adverts etc. Then agian, I'm no expert.

Jockser, you are absolutely right on that one! Ron Paul is the only candidate in this election who is a strict constitutionalist ... unfortunately his own party shuns him as a fringe-radical even though is views are more centrist! Technically, he's a libertarian, but our 2 party system makes it very hard for 3-party candidates to be viable in national elections.

Although he won't win his party's nomination, his canidacy has REALLY encouraged a broad spectrum of passionate people to support him. I really believe that he has ignited a revolution in this country and that there will be many "Ron Pauls" in future elections that will win congressional seats, etc.

    "google" ron paul!

They were saying this time last year that Clinton would get the nod for the democrats and she would have Obama as her running mate being the perfect foil of the first female president and black vice president (I can be corrected on that one) with Obama then running for president when Hilarys term is up to become the first black president.

Now with Obama looking more likely to get the democratic vote will he ask Hilary to run with him.

Personally I think the US elections are a great laugh, they all employ every single under handed dirty back-stabbing tactic known to man and ususally come up with a few new ones to get to the Whitehouse and everyone knows it yet one of them gets voted into power. Who was the last US president not to get hit with a scandel either while in power or after relating to stuff done in power, while collar gangsters every one of them

Great observations Pimboli ... the fact is that you cannot rise to such political prominance in this country these days unless you've a) got a ton of money (cost of a successfull campaign estimated at minimum of $100 million) and b) you've shaken some hands and made some deals to get where you are.

And to answer your question, there was never a presidency that wasn't hit with major scandal! (except probably WH Harrison who died in office after 30 days)

Yeah Jockser, West Chester eh? Nice area out there. I've lived in Philly for about 4 years now and I love it. Had you ever been down down to Tir Na Nog to watch any games? It's a pretty decent pub; I can always catch my LFC playing. They also play all the gaelic games, so I've watched a fair share of hurling and football ... and lots of Rugby too: league, union, Heineken Cup, etc. Always a lot of expats hanging out there!

One final point on this topic ... the two of them are VERY close so far in the primary stage .... it's too early to call ... but LAST NIGHT they had a debate, and it was a REAL debate finally .. Obama and Clinton were going at each other like I've never seen in ANY debate before! The CNN moderator totally lost control! It was unbelievable ... and actually really refreshing to see to the candidates criticizing and debating each other!

Its all about Clinton and Obama but I personally dont think either of them will beat McCain.

If anyone watches the Daily Show with John Stewart, McCain does be on it a fair bit (before the current nomination elections) and is very very popular, funny and is a genuine war hero. The only thing working against him is his age.

I only mention the Daily Show as being on that show and having joke slagging matches with Stewart gives him serious street cred with the MTV generation compared to Obama and Clinton that they probably dont give a sh!t about. The only way I see the Democrats getting in is regardless of who wins the nomination, the other runs on their ticket therefore getting the democratic vote, female vote and black vote.
