Hi, i have all music and pictures on my desktop,
i want to transfer them to my laptop, what is the best way to do this,
i tried setting up a network connection but it dosent seem to work and i tried through the wireless modem.
Any other ways i can connect them together or is just using a USB stick the best.
    Cheers

maybe compress them and put them on dvd? I think you can use a program on nero to do it. but there's probably easier and better ways to do it.

U mean ZIP them? And how many would fit onto a DVD. Average song lengths.

i can't remember how i did it as it was a few years ago all i remember is that i used nero 7 or 8 and got a lot of music onto a dvd and had to use it again to get it back off again on another computer.sorry i know its not much help but somebody else might be about to fill in the blanks

Also if you knew someone with an external hard drive with some free space you could copy to that and paste to your laptop.

Well south, the hard drive option seems good.
Cant understand why cant create network.
    What does Nero do?

Nero is a Dvd/CD burnig software.

If you make an MP3 disc using Nero you should be able to fit hundreads of songs on one Cd as it compresses them to smaller files.

But if you've tonnes of various files to transfer then an external hard-drive is the way to go.

They aren't that dear and it's very handy to have one around.

Give the network thing another go first though

I'd say get a 2gig flash key. Can get them for around €10/15 quid on ebay.

nero is a burning tool alright but i think i used nero back it up and compressed a good few hours of music onto each dvd-rw but as the lads were saying a flash key or hard drive would probably be the best way to go

MP3s are compressed already. For general file transfer a USB stick is deffo the way to go. You'd get 4.5gb onto a DVD and this is the way I used to do my backups but these day you'd only pay 20 euro for a 4gb USB stick. 8gb ones are nought these days and seem to be the new average (which is abs shocking progression to anybody that started off with 256/512mb versions)

I transfer loads of stuff from work laptop to home desktop this way and its a no brainer in terms of ease of use and reusability. No need for software just copy the files straight. As I said they're already compressed. An uncompressed version would be a .wav file, much bigger in size, which is what is actually on commercial CDs. Zipping MP3/4/WMAs will basically just archive them into one file but won't save you much space at all.

I wouldn't go buying an external hard drive for a once off transfer but generally they can be handy for being the master version of your files if working off two machines which you can sync to it (and also cos laptop hard drives only go so big). They're much cheaper now too but its overkill for what you want to do.

right, what version of windows are you using? setting up a home network is pretty simple, should be able to talk you through it on here. its definately the cheapest and quickest way to transfer files from one pc to another

once both PCs/laptops are on the same network at home thats pretty much it bar "turning it on". When it wasnt working, did you get an error message?

Best options are either an external hardrive/USB drive to copy the files onto and transfer them that way. It would be the minimum hassle option imo.

Burning to a CD or DVD is a good option too.

The only question is the size of the files. If you have music there I imagine you're running up into several gigs of data (or if you're like me, 20-30 gigs) which would take a while to transfer by CD/DVD.

I presume you dont need to do this anymore, but if you do and your stuck and your in Athlone I'd be able to give you the loan of an external hard drive, not a big job at all: Drag files from one pc onto hard drive, plug it into the other pc and drag off.. simple:)

Networking is not my strong point what so ever so dont ask me about that!

Im not, i know a couple of lads in it but i'd never be able to go to any meetings or anything. I'm in college in galway monday-friday work saturday, saturday night and sunday . and i have to squeeze the girlfriend in somewhere too :)
