Cut-out garda car to combat speeding
    Monday, 30 June 2008 22:23
Kildare County Council is putting a life size cut-out of a garda car on roadsides throughout the county to stop motorists speeding.

The first cut-out was put in place on Saturday morning on the N78 at Fontstown, between Athy and Kilcullen.

Kildare's Road Safety Officer Declan Keogh says 'the car is a heavy robust wood cut-out and is not cardboard by any means'.

AdvertisementHe said that the location of the mock garda car was considered with effectiveness in mind, but safety was of utmost importance.

From a distance motorists see what they believe to be a garda vehicle and hopefully react by slowing down.

Responding to queries as to why the garda car was facing inwards, rather than outwards, Mr Keogh says regardless of which way the vehicle is facing, or the direction the garda is pointing the speed detector in, its main objective to deter drivers from speeding is in fact working.

The car will be placed at various locations throughout Co
Kildare at varied times and no notice will be given to the public on the placements.

    Class idea.
I know, if I even see a cop car coming the opposite direction I will slow down and if I saw what I thought to be one in the distance I would deffo slow down.

even if your within the speed limits i find its a natural reaction to slow down so it should work alright , until vandalism sets in ha

 Fail to see what relevance that has to the topic in the article.

Anyway, if it saves 1 life on our roads, it will be more than worth it.

Sounds like a great road saftey plan. Most people's gut reaction would be to slow down once they spot anything resembling a garda car. The vandal threat might be small enough if the model is kept on busy roads and brought in at night. Good plan.

This idea could be used in many situations, how about a cardboard cut out of Mary Harney to help you, ahem, slow down in the bedroom?

Not that I have that problem myself or anything

If you donated cut outs of the entire Chelsea and Man united teams to the local taekwondo class you'd get a 200% increase in work rate out of the students. FACT. It'd be pretty expensive having to replace broken up cut outs after every class though.

Jeez i better stop before you do destroy me :):):):)

Anybody travel northbound on the M11/M50 in the mornings?

If you do keep any eye out for the cop car that does be sitting on the ramp think it is just before the carrickmines exit, Its there at least three times a week two coppers sitting in the car reading the morning papers and drinking tea and not one person will speed at that spot even if there not there natrual reaction i suppose.....
