I have to say I watched Billy Connolly a few times on tele and his DVD's and I don't get it at all -was expecting him to be HILARIOUS but I don't think he's that funny. Give me Peter Kay any day. Although how long is it since he has done anything - he's still a legend!
Saw him a few weeks ago for the 1st time and thought his gig was brilliant. I've seen Des Bishop and Dara O'Briain also in the last 6 months also and to be honest their show wasn't a patch on Connollys. Thought it was good value for money. Maybe that's just down to personal opinion!
i went to see him in limerick a few weeks ago and thought the same as you. i thought he was going to be a lot better then he was.
it's like watching paul mccartney in concert, good but not great but imagine how good he was 30 years ago. Peter Kay is excellent but not a patch on Billy, his stream of thought comedy is amazing and has stood the test of 35 odd years of standup.Watch a tommy tiernan dvd then watch Billy at albert,no comparison. P.S. i've seen him recently and still thought he was excellent
Yeah, I have agree with this. I never got his comedy, used to listen to tapes of him at work and wached a few DVDs in 90s. Though I thought some of it was amusing I never really laughed once. His comments on Ken Bigley have done a lot of harm to his rep IMO. Peter Key for me every day of the week
Going this saturday to see him. You just didn't hav enough drink taken! Really think he past it, but this i'd say will be last chance saloon to see him. And since he's here might as well go see him! Went not so long ago to see Andrew Maxwell in Vicar street, now he was Shite! And Bovinity coming up in July Tommy Tiernan can't wait or him!
i Thought i was going last Saturday but when we got to the Door of the Olympia we Discovered the Tkts were for this Saturday Disaster! i like Thinks he's Funny,so is Peter Kay.they'd be up there with my Favourites. without Doubt the Funniest Man i've ever Seen Live is Tommy Nicholson.he's probably the best kept Secret in the Irish Comedy Circuit.how he hasn't made it Big is beyond me. very, very Funny Man....
Haha Avid that made me smile, I'd say ya felt like a right egit!. Hope you went and got very drunk anyway to console yourself. Never heard of Tommy Nicholson. Has he done any gigs recently?
ah will ye stop, felt like a right gobshite Walking back up the Olympia Lane. i just Assumed that was his last Night,i never even Looked at the Date on the Tkts i've Seen TN a few times in the International Comedy Club.you should check him out,he's a Gas Man. when Pierce Brosnan was James Bond he used to Talk about what it would be like if James Bond really was from Navan.funny as fcuk!
You would want to be careful MrsStevieG. That place can be a bit hit and miss but its far better than the Laughter Lounge on the quays. The last time I was there they were awful. Kevin Gildea was painfully bad. Eddie Izard is playing there soon aparently. (but so is Maeve Higgins )
I've been to the International loads of times, its a great spot. Used to work in town so would head on the occasional Friday evening after a few drinks after work. Don't think I've seen your man Tommy there though will keep an eye out for him!
Was at that gig on Saturday night and thought the same as you. Got the tics for free though and they were in one of the little boxes, great view!! Pissin myself laughing at him not going over the white line on the stage as no one in the Gods could see him! Saw him there about 10 years ago too and it was way better....think he's just not got the same material he used to.
I love the International bar never had a bad night there,I have not been there in a while must pop back in some night.
Yeah me too, haven't been since I stopped working in town a few months ago. The last time I was there Ardal O'Hanlon was the "special guest". He was quite good! Anyone been to the Laughter Lounge since it re opened? I'd also recommend that as a good place for a night out.
Ha I just read your post there Reder! Don't know how I missed it Like Dub13 I've never had a bad night in the International and have been loads of times. Apart from the odd bad slot (maybe a young lad doing his first gig or something!) but nothing too painful and the others on the night always made up for it. As you can see from above, I also like the Laughter Lounge. Was only there once but had a great night!. Paddy Courtney was MCing on the night. All of the comedians were very good - except for one mad aulone who was going on about menopause and the likes - wasn't funny at all and I was cringing for her she was so bad. I really love going to comedy gigs and I think the International and Laughter Lounge are great spots. Its' great to see more comedy nights popping up around the place cos I think we don't have enough of them
Yes, we went in on a group booking last time. It looks nice and we got a free cocktail cos we went in early. They were very low on alcohol. Its gone up in price and we got charged a fortune for 2 platters of crappy food as well.
Saw Billy live for the 1st time ever in San fran in early April- got tickets a week before the gig and there was a capacity of less than 500 I reckon. He was very good. I was never lucky enough to get tickets for any shows at home cos they always sold out too quickly. Don't think he will ever reach the heights of the late 70', 80 and early 90's but i was delighted to finally see him live.
Saw Billy in the Olympia last night. I've never seen him before, always loved his stuff from years ago on TV. He was good, but not great or anything. Years ago it was the shock factor that got him his reputation, very few others if anyone were doing anything like what he was doing, but now that's gone. I suppose that shows the influence he had on todays comedians. He plays a lot on the drifting from one story to another too, as if he's making it up as he goes along, but it's obvious that it's all planned. I'm glad I went because he was one of those must see acts, but I wouldn't be rushing back.
