Looks like I could be moving to Melbourne for 6 months or so in June. Anybody been there before? Whats the nightlife like and is it hard to find reasonably priced rented accomodation in a central location? Most importantly are there any bars that open after hours to watch the footy??? Any help/advice is much appreciated.
I've never been to oz but im the only one out of my group that hasn't. most of my mates started in Sydney, did some travelling and ended up in Melbourne. From what I've heard from all of them Melbourne is head and shoulders above the rest and a good few friends have ended up staying there. Supposedly a very european feel about it and great nightlife by the sounds of things. Nearly all my mates support the reds and anytime im on the phone to them when a game is on they are either in the melbourne celtic supporters club which shows all liverpool games or some casino that also does. Its one place I really want to go to after all the good things I've heard. Good luck, if you need any specific info feel free to ask and i'll run it by the lads.
I lived in Sydney but spent a good few weekends in Melbourne. I would not say it head and shoulders above Sydney in terms of lifestyle, although its a lot more chilled and people are generally a bit more hippy. The Climate is more like ours and winter there is quite like an Irish spring. You will landing though in middle of winter so I dont think you will need the speedos. Plenty of showers but not freezing around that time of years in Melborune. As for accomadation, I would recommend St Kilda or Richmond, pricy enough, 130 bucks(70 euro back then) a week my mates were paying for a cool pad in St Kilda. Its reasonably close to city centre by Tram and there is a real good vibe about it. As for watching the reds, no fear, a lot of bars are 24 hours and no problem seeing the footie. I got foxtel into the gaff and you get all the matches you get at home. Only issue is staying up to five on Sunday night and getting up for work next morning. Bit of a killer for the Champs League as well. If you are going, good luck with it, its a great great spot.
Cue next season and the following announcement: "Wigan v Liverpool live here in Paddy O'Reilly's at 4.15am (5.15pm GMT) on Sunday morning. Don't miss it"
Cheers for the info lads that pretty much sums up what we've heard about Melbourne so far and have to say am really looking forward to it now. Gonna check out that area St.Kilda for a place, looks like we'll be looking for a big place as there is 6 of us heading over. The jobs we've sussed out seem to pay really well and living costs aren't half as expensive so hopefully we'll get a nice pad. Bring on Stoke vs Liverpool at 5.15 am on a tue morning with slysports billing it as the biggest game of the season
You dont get Sky Sports, its the EPL on foxtel and Robbie Slater (Ex Starlet for Blackburn and West Ham) was always on the panel when I was there. Its quality analysis http://www.foxsports.com.au/football/epl Champions LEague is on ESPN and they main man for it is a gent called Tommy Symth. Imagine the most annoying pundit ever and * 10. He goes on about the auld Onion bag and such like. It based in America and he is sterotypical Irish American who sounds like he is on the Whiskey all day every day Some of the guff is beyond belief. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/feature?id=252531&cc=5739 Its all good though you will most likely be bladdered watching most of them, so you will find it funny
