Big game this on sunday, hopefully Torres is fit after his scans.

Lucas will prob start i imagine, has to be 3 points tho from this, if not it is gonna be a even bigger struggle with them for 4th spot

I would imagine that he'll start Lucas instead of Masch and if Torres is fit the rest of team will most likely be the same. Could be interesting if Torres is out because Benitez would have to change a few more things around but hopefully he'll be all good.
Hard to see crouch being happy about all the bench time he's been getting lately but he wouldn't fit in with the current system at all.

they will be happy with 0-0 and they'll line up accordingly. If we could get an early goal they'll have to come and play a bit. Cahill (or Kayhill as the commentators pronounce it) offers such a threat from midfield, he'll have to be watched closely, the sort of player mascherano would noramlly have in his pocket.

Any sort of win will do, 5 points clear and I dont think they'll catch us.

Everton are not playing as well in recent games but no doubt will lift it for Sunday, Torres may be rested with three Arsenal games coming up very quickly, a win is a must to put us further ahead of Everton.

Well i reckon that Benitez will probably play his strongest team against Everton at the weekend, it wouldnt make sense for him not to. If we can get to 5 points ahead with them still to face arsenal and chelsea we should be ok but it will be one hell of a tough game and and i'd say the lads are wrecked from all the games recently.
Hopefully have Masch available for the Champions league games against the gunners so he should be able to keep Fabregas on a tight leash.

To be honest lately evertons form has taken a big dip and even without Torres we should still have enough to beat them.

This obviously won't be an easy game for us. Just lets hope the lads are well up for it after what happened on Sunday, and they can win it.

our home form hasnt been the greatest this season but i think we have enough to beat them. Form usually goes out the window in derby games anyway and hopefully we can score in 1st haf and build on it in the 2nd:)

Gonna be boring here but I think this will be a draw. 1-1. Dont think that would be the worst result in the world either. I wonder will he stick with skrtel. I was really impressed with him until the united game. Poor guy really struggled tho. I hope rafa keeps him in. Nothing is gained by bringing hyppia in. I love sami but we have to look to the future.

the team will prob be very close to recent times with lucas stepping in alongside alonso. everton usually play 4-5-1 as well so rafa will look to at least equal them in the middle of the park. it would be nice to see us getting 2 or 3 before the hour mark to rest a few players but this is a derby, its very unpredictable.

Stevie G (or anyone else) may lunge in late twice and we're playing a man and a captain down.(even though last time this happened, we won 2-1) im going to go with 2-0 though.

I think we may see a few changes for this game, its possible that Finnan may find his way back into the team and although lucas is the natural choice i wouln't be too surprised if Benayoun got a run out, especially with him scoring for israel last night. Crouch is bound to get more minutes at some stage this year and Benitez may just opt for a more traditional 4-4-2 with crouch and Torres upfront, Babel on the left and Benayoun on the right, actually i doubt the media would let him away with that so it will most likely be just Lucas in for Masch!

3-0 with 60 mins gone, then bring off gerrard, torres and carra for arsenal.

Everton pull a goal back, but we win 3-1.

They are gona kick the ankels off Torres, big time. I agree, we need to march them 4-5-1 and then rip into them. Gerrard will be fired up for this one. My heart says 4-1 .. my head says a 2-1 win will do.

I'm not too convinced that Gerrard is going too be fired up for this one, he seems terribly concerned with whats going on in the England set up and we really need him to be more focussed on our next game. Not that as our captain he should need any extra motivation to play well!

Can definitely see Lucas coming in aswell with Masch being absent.

Can`t say im really worried about this one.....the players know that a win here would really relieve pressure for 4th.

They`ll be told to keep their cool I imagine.....

amusing report in Liverpool Echo today
http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-fc/liverpool-fc-news/2008/03/28/it-s-time-to-play-derby-bingo-100252-20687629/

it reads :-
It’s time to play ... DERBY BINGO!
Mar 28 2008 by Greg O'Keeffe and Paddy Shennan, Liverpool Echo

This Sunday’s 207th Merseyside derby could be more fraught than ever, with both sides slugging it out for... fourth place (albeit an extremely lucrative Champions League position). Paddy Shennan and Greg O’Keeffe invite you to enjoy a spot of light relief – and a fun new game – with their cut out and keep guide to the big day

EYES down (if you can bear to watch) ... it’s time to play Merseyside Derby Bingo!

We may not be able to predict the result of this weekend’s eagerly-awaited – or should that be dreaded? – Liverpool v Everton clash, but certain things are bound to be said and done at Anfield this Sunday, and in homes and pubs across Merseyside.

So here’s your cut-out and keep guide for a bit of bingo fun – a new game you can all play at home or, if you are lucky or unlucky enough to have a ticket, in the ground.

It’s always a tense occasion but, in a bid to bring a bit of lightness to what has become an increasingly serious and, sadly, fractious fixture, let’s at least try to have a bit of a laugh at ourselves. And our teams.

But, er, sorry, there’ll be no prizes for a full house.

1Sky Sports’ presenter Richard Keys will invite Jamie Redknapp and Andy Gray to go on and on and on and on and on and on about the difficult task facing referee Howard Webb, in the light of the current debate on player dissent – and Mark Clattenburg’s controversial performance in this season’s Goodison derby.

2At some stage, Keys will say, in his most serious Let’s-really- hype-this-one-to-the-heavens voice: “They don’t come much bigger than this!” Or: “Jamie/Andy, you’ve played in these games, tell us (looks earnestly directly into the camera because, hey, he really wants us to feel involved) what are they like?”

3Co-commentator Andy Gray – if fit to report for work after losing the plot during last weekend’s Man U-Liverpool game (do you reckon Redknapp thought he was going to punch him?) – will begin a shouted sentence with “I’ll tell yer what ...” and/or make at least one thinly-veiled dig at referees in general, perhaps even dragging Steve Bennett’s name into his dreary monologue.

4Evertonians in the Anfield Road End will be spotted waving American flags in an “ironic” and “amusing” way.

5Liverpudlians on the Kop will be spotted waving Tesco carrier bags in an “ironic” and “amusing” way.

6Liverpudlians will be heard singing about Everton being “a small club in Kirkby”.

7Evertonians will be heard singing “Spot the Scouser on the Kop”.

8Liverpudlians on the Kop will unfurl a banner at half-time, which says “One City. One Club ... One Sugar, Please!” Or something like that.

9Evertonians will unfurl a banner which says “LFC: Made in Liverpool ... and America ... and Dubai”. Or something like that.

10Something for the ladies (and hairdressers and fashion victims) ... comments will be made at the ground and in pubs and homes across Merseyside about one or all of the following: Steven Pienaar’s girlie pigtails (if sporting them), Steven Gerrard’s “Tintin”-style tuft, Mikel Arteta’s “Brylcreem-style” sheen and *Fernando Torres’ girlie hairband.

11During the build-up, Sky cameras will constantly cut to two fans sat next to each other wearing red and blue shirts. Cue ad infinitum references to “mixed families” and the mythical “friendly derby”. At the final whistle the cameras will cut back to find one of them, head in hands, fighting back tears.

12One or more of the fired-up local lads will get a very early yellow card for a tackle that should come with a health and safety warning. He could also risk an early bath after getting carried away by the occasion (keep your eyes on Reds Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher and Blues Tony Hibbert and Leon Osman).

13Regardless of how many frustrating stoppages and furtive minutes have been gobbled up by anxious physios patching up their team’s talisman, the referee will still enrage one set of fans (and delight the others) by merely adding the standard three minutes of derby match injury time.

14Normally placid suburban streets will become seething hotbeds of tension and mistrust with atmospheres to match Beirut, as partisan neighbours goad one another by banging on the walls when their team scores. Cue thousands of overly worked-up armchair referees being told to “Calm down” and “Grow up” by nonplussed partners.

15Despite both sides flying high in the Premier League and enjoying recent good form, radio ‘phone-in lines will be jammed by sozzled, morose and melancholic misery-moos demanding the instant sacking of their losing manager: “I’ve been saying it (to myself) for years, but today was the final straw. Benitez/Moyes has got to go!”

So that’s that, then. Monday morning won’t come fast enough if your team wins – but won’t bear thinking about if your team loses.

How about a draw then?

.........
end of

Thanx

they'll probably go with 5 in Midfield and try to keep it Tight but hopefully Lpool get an early Goal....
Gerrard will more than likely fall back to Midfield with Masch out,i'd love to See Rafa Play Torres and Crouch up Front but he'll probably go with Lucas/Xabi and Gerrard across the Middle and Kuyt and Babel out Wide,Torres up Front.

Sounds like a spot on assessment of how the teams will line out, and will probably be a carbon copy of the game last February. The thing now is we have Torres and I think he really could turn out to be the difference. His record at Anfield is unreal and he's bound to be relishing his first derby.

The one thing thing that stood in my mind was how disciplined the reds were. Decent performance, clean sheet, 3 points. Not a lot more to say, other than if I were a bluenose I'd be calling Yakubu all sorts of names. He was atrocious. Looked like a man who'd rather have been on the beach. Poor touch, bad positioning, looked isolated, couldn't pick a pass or hold the ball up. Skrtel had a cracking game, and it was great to see Kuyt getting such a good reception from the crowd in the 90th minute when he chased down a lost cause and made 2 blue defenders and Tim Howard panic just because he refused to stop hassling them. Excellent attitude and workrate, but he needs to sharpen up in front of goal.

A good win today, 5 points should be enough for 4th but everton only have 2 away games i think?

4th spot isn't secure yet. With 4 away games to come, all at places where we have poor records, and a hard home game against Blackburn, we have more work to do to secure it.

We've only played Arsenal once in 12 months, so we'll certainly know all about them again after the trilogy.

I think Lucas is getting a raw deal here. Some of his one touch passing was sublime. He got caught in possession a couple of times but that is to be expected when you are not experiencd at this level. He has started maybe 10-15 league games for us and to write him off is folly. He is such a natural footballer that I have no doubt that at 23-24 he will be a top player..

delighted with the three point, torres is beyond amazing and he kept going forward he wasnt satisfied wit just the one he always wants more and thats why he's such a fantastic player.
think babel had a good first half but i noticed he always had two marking him he just can sometimes hold onto the ball that little bit to long.
skrtel filled the centre defender postition very well was a bit frightened when i saw carra on the right. he certainly made some excellent tackles along wit sami.
lucas drove me mad watching him but hopefully it is just inexperience.

We've been hearing a lot about foreign players taking a while to settle into the pace of the premier league and i think that Lucas is a prime example of this! I think that the central midfield roll is probably the most difficult position but i have seem some glimpses of what he has to offer and i'm sure that training every day with the likes of Alonso, Masch and Gerrard can only bring out the best in the young lad.
Babel appears to suffer from a similar problem but fortunately he has the pace to find himself space most of the time.
Even looking at Torres at times i can see that he gets closed down an awful lot faster than he would expect but its a testiment to his ability that he has had such a fantastic season and i'm sure that next season will be even better, if thats even possible!

The one thing that this game shows is how bad the prem is outside the top 4 - we played with ten men for the whole game coz lucas was a liability - he's miles off the pace at this level. Everton r justifiably in 5th place but didnt have a notable shot on goal all game. Babel is not a winger and if we'd a decent left winger to take on hibbert we'd have scored 5 or 6.
Same applies to man city and villa who're just outsied the top 4 too - walloped off the park.
The game itself was ok - dominated the 1st half but wasteful. Crouch should have been on coz u dont need 3 midfielders against everton, and rafas stubborness couldve cost us. all in all just delighted to beat the bs - but if we get chances against arsenal we better take 'em

Skrtel had a cracking game
fair play to you mate, the only one on this Thread to mention him.
i thought he was brilliant yesterday, his best Game in a Red Shirt so far for me.
loved it when Gerrard Creased Jagielka in the 1st Half, welcome to the Derby you Blue Nosed Txxt!:D
that would've been some Goal, the only Player on the Park capable of doing something like that and that includes Torres....

From what I saw in the highlights I thought Stevie was awesome. His timing and aggression in the tackles was outstanding. Some of passing was sublime.Only he could pull them off.
I would shit myself if I saw him coming in at me like that.Love the Guy.

Controlled Aggression mate,he's Learned from his Sending off 2 Years ago....
he takes a lot of stick but i've always said the Lad has the Ability to be European Footballer of the Year at the very least.
People say he doesn't do it in the Big Games,he does and he doesn't....
i'd love to See him Step up to the Plate in the Arsenal CL Games;)

BENITEZ LABELS CHANTS 'DISRESPECTFUL'
Jimmy Rice 31 March 2008
Rafa Benitez claims victory in the 207th Merseyside derby felt even sweeter following 'disrespectful' chants from sections of the Everton support.
The Anfield boss yesterday led his side to the double over their city rivals for only the third time in the Premier League.

Afterwards he said: "I think it is more for our supporters and for the team because we have three more points and the gap is five points.

"I am sure some of the players will be very pleased because I do not like to hear some of the things I heard.

"It showed a lack of respect for some players. So I am really pleased, especially for some players.

"I am very pleased we did the double against Everton for our supporters and it was really important for the team and the club."

anyone know what they were chanting ?

Skrtel had a very good game, Carra was a bit of a hoofer for me, but was solid enough.

Kuyt played well to all things considering.

Have to agree with everything above said about Skrtel - the lad just keeps on getting better and better and could prove to be a real gem. I especially liked the way he was constantly bossing and organising the defence in the second half, ordering Sami to stick with his man while he went across to take care of Yakubu.

Kuyt was all effort, running and harrying all day. Just a pity he couldn't bring his shooting boots with him every so often!

How good was that?
Great atmosphere and beating the bluesh*te :D

Was so happy to see Skyrtel recover after the poor game against the scum. Lucas did a good job in the middle and Hyypia was well Hyypia...
Great to see Torres score Again.... did anyone else feel that he was out on his legs for the last 20 mins? could have taken him off a little earlier i thought...

Bring on the Arsenal now... no fear, and its our competition to play for ...

I agree Torres looked a little tired, Benitez would have liked a 2nd so he could take him off along with Gerrard. Lets hope that the epic at the Reebok took alot out of the Gooners
