Olympic champion Wariner beaten in Sydney 200m Sat 16 Feb, 12:07 PM SYDNEY (AFP) - World and Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner was beaten by Australian Daniel Batman in the 200 metres at the Sydney athletics Grand Prix meeting at Olympic Park here Saturday. Wariner, the big name on the programme after the withdrawal of 100m world record holder Asafa Powell with a cut knee, finished second to Batman (20.81 seconds) in 20.93. The Texan's top event is the 400m, in which he is the reigning world and Olympic champion, and he seems far from peak form ahead of the Beijing Olympics. But Wariner said he was unperturbed at being beaten in the early season race. "This is really just a tune-up race for me to see where I'm at with my training and what I need to work on," he said. "I've got a lot of improving to do. It's early in my season, it's only February, Olympics aren't until August. I knew (Batman) was a good runner." Wariner said he is looking forward to returning to his more favoured 400m at the next event in Melbourne on Thursday. In the men's 100m, Australian Matt Shirvington and world championship silver medallist Darrel Brown of Trinidad finished in the same time of 10.43 seconds, but Shirvington was given the victory after a review by officials. The meet suffered from several high-profile absentees, including Jamaican Asafa Powell and Australian world 400m hurdles champion Jana Rawlinson. Jamaican Commonwealth Games champion Sherone Simpson won the women's 200m
